Why Your Hostas Look Terrible (and How to Fix Slugs, Crown Rot, and Scorched Leaves)

Diagnosing Hosta Problems: One Table, Three Answers

When a hosta starts looking bad, most gardeners reach for whatever comes to hand — a fungicide, some fertilizer, a watering can. The problem is that slugs, crown rot, and leaf scorch look superficially similar (damaged or discolored leaves), but they need completely different responses. Treating crown rot with a fungicide does nothing. Leaving slug damage unaddressed guarantees worse holes next week. Slugs: The Most Common Hosta Problem

Slugs create the damage most hosta gardeners notice first: ragged, irregular holes punched through the leaf blade, often in the middle of the leaf rather than at the edges. Unlike insect feeding, which tends to leave cleaner margins or skeletonized veins, slug damage has a torn, rough edge on each hole. The diagnostic clincher is the slime trail — check early in the morning before it dries. On a sunny morning the trail reflects light like a thin film of glass across the leaf surface.

Life Cycle Timing: the Key to Effective Control

The gray garden slug (Deroceras reticulatum) — the most common species on hostas — overwinters as eggs in the soil or under plant debris, hatching in spring and early summer. This spring hatch is your primary treatment window. A second, often-missed window opens in fall, when adults lay a fresh batch of approximately 300 eggs each. Treating only in spring and ignoring fall means you are growing next year’s population in your own beds.

Slugs are primarily nocturnal. They feed when it is cool and damp, sheltering under mulch, boards, and dense groundcover during the day. Shady hosta beds — with their ground-level canopy and moist soil — are ideal slug habitat. Thin-leaved hostas in full shade take the worst damage; thick-leaved blue cultivars like ‘Elegans’, ‘Halcyon’, and ‘Big Daddy’ see noticeably less feeding because their waxy surface is harder for a slug’s rasping tongue (radula) to grip. Control Methods, Ranked by Practicality

Iron phosphate baits (Sluggo, Ferroxx) are the first choice for home gardens. The mechanism matters: iron phosphate is a stomach poison that disrupts the slug’s digestive system within 3–6 days of ingestion, at which point the slug stops feeding and eventually dies. It does not act on contact. The bait remains effective for up to two weeks even after rain, breaks down into iron and phosphate (soil nutrients), and is safe around children, pets, and wildlife. Apply it in the late afternoon or evening, just before slugs become active, scattering it around but not against hosta crowns.

Handpicking two hours after sunset is surprisingly effective — the University of Maryland Extension describes it as a “very effective method of immediate control.” A headlamp and a container of soapy water are all you need. Cover the same ground for three or four evenings in a row during spring or after a rainy spell.

Beer traps work on the same fermentation-attractant principle. Sink the container flush with the soil so slugs fall in. One caution: beer traps can draw slugs from the surrounding area, so remove and dispose of captured slugs daily rather than letting the trap overflow and become a breeding site.

Habitat reduction supports all other methods. Pull mulch back 2–3 inches from hosta crowns in spring and fall. Remove boards, pots, and debris piles within a few feet of the bed. Thin any dense groundcover that keeps the soil surface permanently damp.

Crown Rot: The Problem That Kills Plants

Crown rot caused by Agroathelia rolfsii (formerly Sclerotium rolfsii) is the most destructive hosta disease, and also the most mismanaged. Many gardeners apply fungicides when they see it — but no registered fungicide applied after infection clears this disease. Understanding why changes how you respond.

Identifying Crown Rot Before It Spreads

The first visible symptom is yellowing and browning of the lowest leaves, starting at the margins and working inward. Unlike leaf scorch, which stays at the leaf edges on the sun-exposed side, crown rot discoloration starts at the petiole base — the point where the leaf stem meets the crown. Tug a yellowing leaf: if it detaches cleanly with a brown, soft, rotted petiole base, that’s diagnostic.

Get down and look at the soil right at the crown. Active infection produces coarse, white cottony mycelium — sometimes described as looking like white mold — spreading out from the base of the plant. Look also for sclerotia: tiny spherical survival structures that start white when freshly formed and gradually turn brick-red as they mature, roughly the size of a peppercorn or BB. Seeing brick-red sclerotia means the pathogen has been established for some time and the soil is thoroughly infested.

Why It Spreads Fast in Summer

A. rolfsii is soil-borne, attacking the plant at or below the soil line. Disease development accelerates once temperatures exceed 70°F and peaks between 86°F and 95°F — exactly the conditions that arrive in most US gardens from June through August. The fungus spreads readily through waterlogged soil and on contaminated tools. One infected crown can seed several others in the same bed across a single season if you do not act.

This pathogen also affects over 500 plant species, so sclerotia in the soil persist for years waiting for a susceptible host. Removing the plant without removing the surrounding soil leaves the problem fully intact.

The Only Effective Response

Remove the entire plant, including all root tissue. Then excavate and bag the surrounding soil to a depth of 6–8 inches and a radius of at least 12 inches beyond any visible mycelium. Do not compost the plant or the soil — both carry sclerotia. Sterilize every tool that touched the affected area with a 10% bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water).

Tebuconazole, a systemic fungicide, can be applied preventively at the start of the following season in beds where crown rot has appeared before — but it will not cure an active infection. The label matters here: preventive, not curative.

For the empty space left behind, ferns, astilbes, and hellebores are shade-tolerant and generally more resistant to A. rolfsii. Leaf Scorch: When the Problem Is Light, Not Disease

Leaf scorch is the most misdiagnosed hosta problem — mainly because the browning looks, at a glance, similar to the early-stage yellowing of crown rot or the tattered appearance of anthracnose. The reliable diagnostic is location: scorch damage appears at the leaf edges, working inward, and it is concentrated on whichever side of the plant faces the most sun.

Scorch vs. Sunburn: Two Related but Distinct Symptoms

Scorch produces browning along the leaf margins and tips. Sunburn — caused by sudden intense direct radiation, often after a tree is removed or a hosta is moved from shade — starts differently: the affected area first bleaches to a pale, washed-out color before turning brown. Both result from the same underlying mechanism: the plant is losing moisture through its leaves faster than its roots can replace it. University of Maryland Extension confirms this is a nonliving environmental injury, not a pathogen — which is why fungicides and pesticides will not help.

Hostas transpire heavily through their large leaf surfaces. On hot, low-humidity afternoons with direct sun, even a well-watered hosta can run a water deficit fast enough to destroy leaf cells before the roots can compensate. White or cream-centred hostas with less chlorophyll are the most vulnerable; the pale sections burn before the greener margins do.

Scorch vs. Hosta Virus X: Don’t Confuse These Two

Hosta Virus X (HVX) is the disease new gardeners most often mistake for scorch. The distinction is critical: HVX causes ink-bleed or mosaic patterning that follows the leaf veins, not edge browning. In variegated hostas, color bleeding between the normal color zones is a strong indicator. There is no treatment for HVX; infected plants must be removed and destroyed to prevent spread through tools and contact. Managing and Preventing Scorch

Leave scorched leaves in place until new healthy growth has emerged. Even damaged leaves still contribute photosynthesis from their remaining green tissue and shade the crown and younger growth from further radiation. Removing them early exposes the plant to more stress, not less.

Long-term, the fix is position. Most hostas thrive in morning sun with afternoon shade, avoiding the intense radiation that peaks between noon and 4 PM. If your garden has a spot with dappled morning light and a tall structure or tree blocking the western sun, that is the best hosta location. If you have a chronically sun-exposed spot, cultivars rated for more exposure — ‘Sum and Substance’, ‘Sun Power’, ‘Gold Standard’ — will still benefit from afternoon shade above zone 6. Consistent moisture and mulch (kept away from the crown) help the plant maintain its water balance on hot days.

Preventing All Three Problems Before They Start

The conditions that prevent slugs, crown rot, and scorch overlap more than you might expect. All three problems are worse when soil stays persistently damp at the crown, when air circulation is poor, and when the hosta is sited wrong for its variety.

For slugs: pull mulch back 2–3 inches from hosta crowns in spring and again in fall — the two peak egg-laying periods. Remove boards, pots, and debris that give daytime shelter. Apply iron phosphate bait at both windows, not just when you first see damage.

In genuine deep shade, browning leaf margins are unlikely to be scorch. Check soil moisture — even shade beds can dry out between waterings during hot weather. Also look for foliar nematodes (stripes parallel to veins, on older leaves) and bacterial soft rot (wet decay with a foul smell at the petiole base). If none of these fit, test your soil pH: hostas prefer slightly acidic conditions around 6.0–6.5, and nutrient deficiencies in alkaline soil can cause marginal browning.
