UC IPM and Oregon State both list iron phosphate as the preferred active ingredient for home gardens. Since March 2022, metaldehyde (the older chemical alternative) has been banned in the UK because it posed an unacceptable risk to birds and mammals such as hedgehogs. Iron phosphate avoids that problem: it has been registered in the US since 1997, is Generally Recognized As Safe by the FDA, and at twice the label rate, earthworms show no measurable harm [2].

Products to look for: Sluggo, Escar-Go!, Worry Free Slug & Snail Bait. Check for “OMRI Listed” on the label if you’re growing organically. Most iron phosphate products qualify.
How to apply it correctly:
- Scatter 4–8 pellets per square foot in a thin, even layer—never pile them in heaps. Slugs encounter scattered bait much faster than a concentrated mound.
- Apply in the late afternoon or early evening as slugs begin their nightly activity [1].
- Lightly irrigate before applying to encourage slug foraging, but don’t water heavily immediately after—wet pellets turn moldy before they’re eaten.
- Reapply every two weeks during peak season, or after heavy rain. Iron phosphate degrades more slowly than metaldehyde in wet conditions.
One version to approach with caution: ferric sodium EDTA (sold as Eliminator or in some Corry’s formulations). It kills in three days rather than seven, but it is not organic-approved and raises earthworm toxicity questions that iron phosphate alone does not [3].

#3 Habitat Modification—Remove the Hotel, Remove the Guests

This is the foundation layer—running without it means you’re treating symptoms, not causes.
What to remove from slug travel routes:

A 2021 literature review covering 30 years of commercial use across Europe found no documented harm to non-target mollusks or soil organisms [4]. #5 Copper Barriers—Useful in Pots, Unreliable in Open Ground

A 2023 RHS experiment under realistic garden conditions found no measurable reduction in slug damage from copper tape barriers [5]. In laboratory testing, 19 of 20 slugs successfully crossed copper barriers to reach food—a poor impassability result [5]. The remaining one may have simply been a hesitant individual.
Copper tape is not entirely without value. It can function as a supplementary barrier around a single pot or a fully enclosed raised bed where:
- The tape is at least 2 inches wide with a portion buried 1–2 inches below soil level [1]
- Every gap and soil bridge is sealed—slugs will find any contact point with the ground
- The tape is polished or replaced when tarnish accumulates, since oxidized copper loses what little deterrent effect it has
Don’t rely on it for open garden beds. The economics don’t work: copper tape is expensive, requires replacement, and the evidence says it won’t reliably stop a determined slug.

#6 Beer Traps—Why They Can Make Your Problem Worse
Beer traps work on paper: fermented yeast attracts slugs, they fall in and drown. The issue lies in how attraction works at garden scale.
UC IPM measures the attraction radius of beer and yeast traps at only a few feet [1]. In a standard garden, that means slugs from several feet around the trap home in on the scent, enter your garden space—and a significant proportion drink from the surface or navigate around the rim without falling in. You’ve drawn them toward your plants, but not necessarily into the trap.
Traps also require meticulous maintenance to have any effect at all:
- Replenish every two to three days—fermentation stops, and so does the attraction [1]
- Inner walls must be steep enough to prevent escape; shallow containers let slugs drink and walk away
- The container needs a lid to slow evaporation and protect bait from diluting in rain
Where beer traps do have some value: in tightly enclosed container gardens or cold frames where slug movement is already restricted. If slugs are already present in a small space with no easy exit, a trap can intercept them between their daytime hiding spots and your plants.
For open garden beds, the maintenance cost rarely justifies the catch rate. If you still want to try them, a yeast-water mix (1 teaspoon dried yeast in 1 cup warm water) works more consistently than fresh beer—the attraction is more predictable and the CO₂ release more controlled [3].
#7 Diatomaceous Earth—The Weakest Option in Typical Garden Conditions
Diatomaceous earth is crushed silica: sharp-edged particles that pierce insect exoskeletons and cause desiccation. Slugs are not insects. They produce mucus at a rate that largely neutralizes DE’s desiccating mechanism—the same mucus that lets them glide across abrasive surfaces without injury.
The deeper problem is moisture. DE loses all effectiveness the moment it gets wet [1]. Your garden receives dew overnight. You water regularly. After a single watering cycle, the DE barrier is inert. UC IPM specifies the correct application: 1 inch high, 3 inches wide, maintained as a continuous band [1]. Even at those dimensions, one rain or one irrigation event ends its usefulness.
DE can work in a greenhouse or cold frame where no rain or irrigation reaches the treated surface. For any outdoor garden in zones 4–8—where dew is routine and irrigation necessary—it doesn’t earn its cost compared to iron phosphate, hand-picking, or habitat modification.
When NOT to Apply Any Slug Control
Applying controls at the wrong time wastes product and can backfire by killing the predators doing free pest control work for you.
- Cold soil (below 40°F / 4°C): Slugs retreat below the soil surface and stop feeding. Bait sits untouched and degrades unused.
- Prolonged drought: Dry, hot conditions naturally suppress slug activity. Wait for the first rain or irrigate before baiting to activate slug foraging [1].
- When natural predators are active: Ground beetles, rove beetles, toads, and hedgehogs all consume slugs. Before reaching for bait, look under debris for fast-moving dark beetles—if they’re present in numbers, broad-spectrum controls kill your own pest control team. Your Seasonal Slug Control Calendar
Late winter (February–March): Clear winter debris before slug eggs hatch. Apply the first iron phosphate application before soil warms above 40°F and the first adults become active.
Spring (April–May): Peak activity. Hand-pick nightly for the first two weeks; continue iron phosphate every 14 days. UK and EU gardeners: apply nematodes in moist soil above 41°F.
Summer (June–August): Reduce interventions during sustained dry, hot spells. Habitat modification carries more of the load—maintain morning-only watering and keep debris cleared.
Autumn (September–October): The single most important baiting window of the year. Oregon State University recommends autumn treatment as the highest-leverage timing for long-term control: targeting breeding adults before egg-laying produces the greatest population reduction for the following season. Two applications timed two to three weeks apart during this window pay dividends every spring after.
Late autumn (November): Final debris clear removes overwintering egg clusters before ground freezes. Eggs can survive temperatures that would kill a live slug.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will salt kill slugs? Yes—salt dehydrates slugs on contact and kills them quickly. But it also destroys soil structure, raises pH, and burns plants in direct contact. Use it to dispatch captured slugs in a bucket, never in the garden bed itself.
How do I know if I have slugs versus snails? Both create identical damage: irregular holes with smooth edges, confirmed by slime trails. Look for the shell to tell them apart. Both pests respond to the same seven controls above.
