Every winter, the same pot cracks in the same spot for the same reason, and it’s rarely the cold air that does it. It’s the water sitting inside the material itself.

Why Pots Crack in a Hard Freeze (It’s Not the Cold — It’s the Water)

Water expands by roughly 9% in volume the moment it turns to ice, because hydrogen bonds lock the molecules into an open, six-sided lattice that takes up more space than liquid water does, according to Georgia State University’s physics department. That expansion happens whether the water is sitting in a puddle, a sealed bottle, or the wall of a clay pot — and inside a rigid material with nowhere for that extra 9% to go, the pressure has to be absorbed somewhere. It’s absorbed as a crack.

This is why the deciding factor for any pot isn’t how cold your winters get — it’s how much water the material lets in to begin with. NC State Extension splits container materials into three groups on exactly this basis: nonporous (plastic, metal, fiberglass, glazed ceramic), semi-porous (wood, pressed fiber), and porous (clay, unglazed ceramic, terracotta). Nonporous materials have no internal structure for water to soak into, so there’s nothing inside the pot wall to freeze and expand. Porous materials are riddled with microscopic capillaries that wick water in every time it rains or you top off the saucer — and every one of those capillaries is a potential fracture line once temperatures drop.

One more detail most buying guides skip: it’s rarely a single freeze that kills a pot. A terracotta container can survive one overnight cold snap and still fail by February, because the damage is cumulative. Each freeze-thaw cycle widens microscopic cracks a little further, and a typical winter delivers dozens of them, not one.

Terracotta (Unglazed Clay): The Classic That Fails a Hard Freeze

Unglazed terracotta is the material most likely to crack outdoors in winter, and no amount of careful watering changes that — the clay itself is the problem. Fired clay is naturally porous, so it draws in rain, irrigation runoff, and condensation directly into its walls. Once temperatures drop below freezing, that absorbed water expands inside the clay structure and blows out the pore walls from the inside, the same 9% expansion problem described above, just concentrated in a material built to soak water up rather than shed it.

Shopping for “frost-resistant” terracotta doesn’t solve this. In the pottery trade, frost-resistant means the clay was fired hot enough to handle a light, brief frost — not a full winter of freeze-thaw cycling. “Frost-proof” terracotta is fired at a higher temperature for longer, vitrifying the clay body into something closer to stoneware and reducing how much water it absorbs in the first place. The RHS’s guidance for winter containers is to choose frost-proof terracotta specifically — or a pot made of plastic, fibreglass, or wood — for anything staying outside through the season.

As a practical rule: in USDA zone 6 and colder, standard terracotta should come indoors or into an unheated garage before your first hard freeze, full stop. Frost-proof terracotta can usually stay out through zone 6 and milder zones, but I’d still empty and store any terracotta you’re not actively growing in once night temperatures start dropping into the low 20s (°F) on a regular basis.

Glazed Ceramic: Looks Sealed, Isn’t Always

A lot of buying advice treats “glazed” as a synonym for “winter-safe,” and that’s an oversimplification. The glaze itself is genuinely close to waterproof — the failure point on a glazed pot is almost never the glazed surface. It’s the parts that aren’t glazed.

Most glazed pots are fired sitting on kiln stilts or their own foot ring, which means a ring of bare, unglazed clay touches the shelf during firing and stays unglazed in the finished pot. Pottery specialists point to this exposed foot ring, along with a clogged or soil-packed drainage hole, as the most common places water gets into the clay body underneath an otherwise sealed glaze. If that clay body is a lower-fired earthenware rather than stoneware — something a buying description rarely specifies — it absorbs water just like unglazed terracotta once it gets in.

Two checks before you trust a glazed pot to winter outdoors: run a finger around the base for any unglazed clay, and confirm the drainage hole is actually clear, not sitting flush against a patio surface where it can seal shut. Raising the pot on feet or bricks solves both the drainage-hole and the wet-base problem at once, and it’s cheap insurance for a pot that often costs three or four times what terracotta does.

Concrete: The Long Game — But Not All Concrete Is Equal

A good concrete planter can outlast every other material on this list by a decade or more, which is exactly why it’s worth understanding what separates a “good” one from a cheap one — the difference isn’t obvious just by looking at the pot. Concrete is porous at a microscopic level, and it absorbs water through the same capillary network described earlier. What determines how much damage that causes is whether the concrete has entrained air.

Air-entraining agents mixed into quality concrete create billions of microscopic air bubbles throughout the material. Peer-reviewed testing on this exact mechanism found that after 100 freeze-thaw cycles, plain (non-air-entrained) concrete lost roughly a third of its structural integrity, dropping to about 64% of its original dynamic modulus, while an air-entrained mix of the same strength class retained about 99% and even a lower-strength air-entrained mix stayed above 94% — essentially undamaged in both cases. Those microscopic air pockets give expanding ice somewhere to go that isn’t the concrete wall itself. Peer-reviewed research published in The Scientific World Journal confirms the air-void structure, not the concrete’s raw strength rating, is what predicts freeze-thaw survival.

Retail garden centers rarely list whether a planter is air-entrained, but the price and origin usually tell you something: mass-produced, thin-walled concrete pots are typically cast without it, while planters marketed for genuine outdoor/exterior use in cold climates usually are. Illinois Extension notes that large concrete and wood planters generally handle a full northern-climate winter outdoors without being emptied — a good sign for quality concrete specifically, less reliable for a bargain planter of unknown composition. If you spot a hairline crack after the first freeze of the season, treat it as an early warning rather than cosmetic damage: that crack is now a direct channel for water into the material, and it will widen with every freeze-thaw cycle that follows until it’s sealed.

Plastic: Reliable, Cheap, With One Long-Term Weakness

For pure freeze-thaw survival, plastic is one of the safer choices you can make, and it’s the cheapest material on this list by a wide margin. It’s nonporous — there’s no internal capillary structure for water to soak into, so there’s essentially nothing inside the material itself to freeze and expand. NC State Extension lists heavy-duty plastic among the container types that tolerate outdoor winters without special handling.

The catch isn’t freezing — it’s age. Thin, budget plastic becomes progressively more brittle with UV exposure over several seasons, and a pot that flexed fine its first winter can crack from ordinary mechanical stress in its fourth or fifth, particularly if frozen, expanding soil inside the pot pushes outward against walls that have lost their flexibility. Thicker, UV-stabilized plastic resists this far longer. If you’re buying plastic specifically to survive winters for years rather than one season, the wall thickness and UV rating matter more than the freeze rating.

Fiberglass: The Best All-Around Pick for Cold Climates

If you want one material that handles a genuinely hard winter without the bulk of concrete or the fragility of clay, it’s fiberglass. Like plastic, it’s classified as nonporous, so the core freeze-thaw mechanism that cracks terracotta and undermines cheap concrete simply doesn’t apply — there’s no absorbed water inside the wall to expand. Several fiberglass planter manufacturers also point to a secondary factor: a small amount of flex built into the molded shell, which they describe as added tolerance for the outward pressure of a frozen, expanding soil mass compared with a fully rigid material like glazed ceramic or concrete.

The tradeoff is price: fiberglass typically costs more than plastic and often more than standard terracotta, though usually less than a large, quality concrete planter of comparable size. For a permanent planting you intend to leave outdoors year after year in a genuinely cold climate, that upfront cost buys you the lightest, most winter-durable option on this list. USDA zone 5 and colder: Freezes are long and hard enough that porous materials — standard terracotta and most glazed ceramic — need to come indoors or into an unheated shed for winter regardless of how carefully you drain them. Plastic, fiberglass, and verified air-entrained concrete are your realistic year-round outdoor options.

USDA zone 6–7: The bigger threat here is frequent freeze-thaw cycling rather than sustained deep cold — nights that dip below freezing and days that climb back above it, over and over. Fiberglass, plastic, and quality concrete handle this well outdoors; terracotta and glazed ceramic are the riskiest choices unless you’re prepared to bring them in during cold snaps.

USDA zone 8 and warmer: Hard freezes are occasional rather than routine, so most materials survive fine with basic precautions — elevating pots and checking drainage — during the handful of nights each winter that actually drop below freezing.

5 Ways to Protect Any Pot Through Winter

  1. Raise it off the ground. Pot feet, bricks, or risers keep the drainage hole clear and stop the base from sitting in a puddle that freezes solid overnight — a fix that costs a few dollars and prevents most of the winter cracks gardeners see.
  2. Empty and store what you can. Any pot not actively holding a plant should be emptied of soil and stored upside-down or on its side. An empty pot has no trapped water to freeze in the first place.
  3. Check every drainage hole before the first hard freeze. Soil, roots, and debris clog holes gradually over a growing season, and a blocked hole turns any pot into a sealed container that traps water at the base.
