Cabbage Worms, Loopers, or Diamondback Moths? The ID Test That Tells You Which Control Actually Works

Three different caterpillars hide under the name ‘cabbage worm’ — and each needs a different control method. Take the 10-second ID test to find yours.

“Cabbage worm” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Depending on which caterpillar is actually eating your broccoli, you could be looking at the imported cabbageworm, the cabbage looper, or the diamondback moth — three different insects with three different feeding patterns and three different levels of resistance to the products gardeners reach for first. Spray Bt on a looper problem and it works well. Spray the same Bt on a diamondback moth population that’s been hit with the same product every week for a few seasons running, and you may be feeding a caterpillar that’s already evolved past it.

When Not to Treat: The Damage Threshold That Actually Matters

Home-garden advice almost always says “treat at first sign of damage.” Commercial growers don’t, because a fixed action threshold protects yield without wasting spray — and the same math scales down to a raised bed. University of Wisconsin’s cole-crop threshold research sets the bar by growth stage: 10% of seedlings showing feeding damage in the seedbed, loosening to 30% during transplant establishment (plants can outgrow moderate damage at this stage), tightening back to 20% through early heading, and 10% again from heading to harvest, when a caterpillar working into the head itself does the most real damage. Translated for a backyard bed: a few chewed outer leaves on an establishing transplant is cosmetic. A caterpillar boring into a forming cabbage head is not — that’s the point to act.

Physical Controls: Row Covers and Hand-Picking

Row covers stop the problem before it starts, and for brassicas specifically, they’re easier to use than the same technique on a tomato or squash bed. Lightweight spun-bonded row cover fabric — as light as 0.45 oz per square yard — blocks egg-laying moths and butterflies while still passing 90% of available light. Because cabbage, broccoli, and kale don’t need insect pollination to form a head, the cover can stay on for the entire growing season instead of coming off at flowering. Install it right after transplanting, before the first white butterfly finds the bed, and anchor the edges into the soil so nothing crawls underneath. One exception: skip the cover on a bed where brassicas grew the previous season, since pupae already overwintering in that soil would hatch trapped under the fabric with nothing else to eat.

For plants already infested, hand-picking still works — genuinely, not as a token gesture. Check leaf undersides every few days, squish the pale yellow conical eggs on sight, and drop larvae into soapy water. On a raised bed of half a dozen cabbage plants, that’s five minutes every couple of days — faster than mixing a spray, with zero non-target risk, and it works on all three species at once.

Bt: The Right Tool, Used the Right Way

Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk) is the standard organic recommendation for a reason: it’s a bacterium, not a broad insecticide, and it only activates inside a gut chemistry caterpillars happen to share. The toxin stays inert until it reaches a gut with a pH between 9.0 and 10.5 — high enough that mammal stomachs never trigger it. Once activated, it breaks down the gut lining, and the larva stops feeding and dies of infection within one to five days. It needs reapplying at least weekly during an active infestation, though: Bt has only a 24–48 hour residual period on the leaf, and it does nothing to eggs or adults.

The caveat competitors gloss over: Btk isn’t cabbage-worm-specific, it’s lepidopteran-larva-specific. Any butterfly or moth caterpillar that eats a treated leaf is affected, including species worth protecting. Michigan State University Extension is explicit that Btk spray and spray drift should stay off milkweed, the sole food source for monarch caterpillars — and the same logic extends to parsley, dill, and fennel, the host plants black swallowtail caterpillars actually eat. In practice: spray only the brassica bed itself, in the late afternoon when fewer beneficial insects are actively foraging, and skip it entirely if a butterfly garden bed sits within drift range.

Beyond Bt: Spinosad, Neem Oil, and Insecticidal Soap

Spinosad is the fastest-acting organic option: caterpillars stop feeding within minutes of ingesting it and are usually dead within 48 hours, which makes it useful when a cabbage looper is already tearing through a head of broccoli and Bt’s slower kill isn’t fast enough. It’s fermented from soil bacteria rather than being a synthetic pesticide, and it’s less hazardous to pollinators than older broad-spectrum sprays — though it should still go on in the evening, after bees have finished foraging for the day.

Insecticidal soap and horticultural oils work differently: they coat and suffocate the caterpillar on contact rather than acting as a stomach poison, so they only affect caterpillars actually hit by the spray, and only while small. Neem oil’s active compound, azadirachtin, works as a feeding deterrent and growth regulator, most effective against first- and second-instar larvae. None of these three penetrate the waxy brassica-leaf cuticle particularly well — extension guidance recommends adding a spreader-sticker to the tank mix so spray clings to the leaf instead of beading off.

Why Diamondback Moths Need a Different Playbook

Of the three, diamondback moth is the one where “just spray something” stops working. It has one of the longest resistance track records of any crop pest — outrunning new insecticide classes since the 1950s — largely from repeated weekly spraying with a single product. Even within the organic options above, extension entomologists now recommend the Bt aizawai strain (sold as XenTari) over the older kurstaki strain (Dipel) specifically because it controls resistant diamondback moth populations better. Home gardens spray less intensively than commercial fields, but the same selection pressure applies if the same bottle comes out every time windowpane damage shows up.

In my own zone 6 garden, spraying the same Bt product against diamondback moth on kale kept populations low for three seasons — until the fourth, when damage kept climbing on the same schedule. Switching to alternating spinosad and Bt by generation brought it back under control within a month.

The fix is rotation, not escalation. Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) guidance for cole crops groups products by mode of action — Bt microbials (Group 11), spinosyns like spinosad (Group 5), and several others — and the rule of thumb is to use any single mode of action no more than twice per pest generation, ideally only once per season against a known resistance-prone species like diamondback moth. In practice, that means alternating: Bt for one generation, spinosad for the next, rather than defaulting to whichever bottle is already in the shed.

Prevention: Trap Crops, Rotation, and Fall Cleanup

All three species overwinter as pupae in soil and plant debris near where they fed, which is why the single most effective long-term move is also the least glamorous: clear brassica debris at season’s end instead of leaving stalks in place, and rotate brassicas out of that bed for three years so overwintering pupae have nowhere to emerge into.

Trap cropping is the more advanced version of the same idea. A Cornell entomology study (Badenes-Perez, Shelton & Nault, Journal of Economic Entomology, 2004) found that when diamondback moths were offered a choice, they laid roughly three times more eggs on glossy-leafed collards than on cabbage — but only 6.7% of those larvae survived to pupation on the glossy collards, versus 22.2% on cabbage. The glossy leaf surface is what makes it a genuine trap rather than just a second host plant: it lures adults to lay eggs somewhere the resulting caterpillars mostly don’t survive. Ordinary waxy-leaf collards don’t have the same effect — the glossy-leaf trait specifically is what drives the preference.

Mythbusting: Does Cornmeal Really Kill Cabbage Worms?

This one shows up constantly: sprinkle cornmeal on the leaves, the caterpillar eats it, can’t digest it, and dies. It’s the same claim recycled from the decades-old “cornmeal kills fire ants” myth, and it holds up no better applied to caterpillars. Linda Chalker-Scott, a Washington State University Extension urban horticulturist, has tracked this myth for years and found no research supporting either proposed mechanism — that insects can’t digest cornmeal, or that it swells in the gut and kills them.
