Cabbage Worms vs. Spongy Moth: The 30-Second Visual Test That Tells You Which Caterpillars to Remove

Find caterpillars on your plants? These 3 visual markers tell you in 30 seconds whether it’s a cabbage pest, spongy moth, or a butterfly larva you should protect.

You’re crouched over your brassicas and you see something green moving on the underside of a leaf. Your first instinct is to reach for a spray. But here’s the problem: the same action that kills the caterpillar shredding your cabbage can also kill the monarch or swallowtail larva that’s just passing through. Some caterpillars belong in your garden. Getting this wrong costs you either your crop or your beneficial insects — sometimes both.

This guide gives you a quick visual test to identify the three most damaging brassica caterpillars, distinguish them from the spongy moth (which doesn’t eat vegetables at all), and recognize the beneficial caterpillars worth protecting.

The 30-Second Visual Test

Before reading further, run through this table. Location is the fastest filter: if your caterpillar is on a brassica, you’re likely looking at one of three common pests. If it’s on a tree, oak, or birch, stop — that’s almost certainly a spongy moth and not your vegetable problem. If it’s on milkweed, parsley, dill, or fennel, don’t touch it.

Three Pest Caterpillars That Actually Damage Brassicas

The overwhelming majority of caterpillar damage to cabbage, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts comes from three species. They’re all green, but each has a distinct combination of size, texture, movement, and damage pattern that makes identification reliable with practice.

Imported Cabbageworm (Pieris rapae)

This is the larva of the cabbage white butterfly — the small white butterfly with two black spots on its forewings that drifts through summer gardens. Its caterpillar is a sluggish, velvety green worm about 1 inch long at maturity, with a faint yellow stripe running the length of its back. The texture is the key identifier: the fine hairs covering the body give it a slightly fuzzy, velvet-like appearance unlike the smooth skin of most other caterpillars.

It feeds exposed on leaf surfaces, chewing large irregular holes, and as it matures it bores into cabbage heads and broccoli florets. You’ll find eggs — conical, pale yellow, about 1mm tall — laid singly on leaf undersides. Scouts in Wisconsin and Michigan typically report 3 to 6 generations per season, with the second generation in mid-July causing the most significant damage [2].

UK gardeners deal with two related white butterflies: the small white (same pest, same caterpillar) and the large white butterfly (Pieris brassicae), whose caterpillars are more obviously yellow-and-black with prominent hairs, and which feed on outer leaves rather than boring into heads [6]. The small white is more damaging in both the US and UK because its larvae head straight for the center of the plant.

Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia ni)

The looper is the biggest of the three at 1.25 to 1.5 inches when fully grown, pale green with a white stripe down each side, and distinctly fatter toward the tail end than the head. It gets its name from its movement: because it has only two pairs of abdominal prolegs instead of the four seen on most caterpillars, it travels by humping its back in a loop, exactly like an inchworm [1].

One reliable behavioral ID: when you disturb a cabbage looper, it rears the front portion of its body up like a cobra. No other common brassica caterpillar does this. One fully grown looper causes approximately the same foliar damage as five diamondback moths [1].

Unlike the imported cabbageworm, the looper’s host range is broad. Besides brassicas, it readily attacks potatoes, tomatoes, peas, lettuce, spinach, and ornamental plants [8]. Its adult form is a nocturnal grayish-brown moth with a distinctive small silver figure-8 or letter Y mark on the forewing.

Diamondback Moth Larva (Plutella xylostella)

The smallest of the three at 3/8 to 1/2 inch and the one that causes the most management headaches. The diamondback moth larva is pale yellowish-green, tapered at both ends (most caterpillars are rounder in the middle), and performs a distinctive thrash-and-drop when disturbed: it wriggles violently and hangs below the leaf on a silk thread [1][2]. No other common brassica pest does this.

Its damage is also diagnostic: it feeds on the underside of leaves while leaving the upper surface intact, creating translucent “windowpane” patches you can see through when you hold the leaf to light. Look for these patches along leaf veins on the undersides of young leaves.

The management challenge with diamondback moth is its insecticide resistance: it has developed confirmed resistance to organophosphates, pyrethroids, and carbamate insecticides in many regions [2]. Bt and spinosad remain effective, which is why these should be the first-line chemical option for all three brassica caterpillar pests.

Spongy Moth: Not a Brassica Pest

If you find a large, hairy, dark-colored caterpillar anywhere in your garden, your first reaction may be alarm. In most cases, you’re looking at something that has nothing to do with your vegetables.

The spongy moth (Lymantria dispar) was officially renamed from “gypsy moth” to “spongy moth” in March 2022 by the Entomological Society of America as part of its Better Common Names Project. The old common name was deemed offensive to Romani people; the new name refers to the spongy texture of the egg masses. You may still see “gypsy moth” in older resources — they’re the same insect.

The caterpillar’s identification markers are the clearest of any common garden caterpillar: five pairs of blue dots running down the back, followed by six pairs of rusty red dots [4]. The body is dark-colored and hairy; the hairs can cause skin irritation in some people, so wear gloves if you handle one [5].

Here is the critical point: spongy moth caterpillars feed on trees, not vegetables. Their preferred hosts are oak, crabapple, linden, poplar, beech, willow, birch, and sweetgum [4]. They don’t eat brassicas. If one turns up on your cabbage, it wandered there from a nearby tree; it won’t feed on the plant and won’t establish an infestation in your vegetable garden.

An adult spongy moth can consume up to one square foot of leaves per day [4], making large outbreaks genuinely damaging to trees — but that’s a tree problem, not a vegetable problem. The appropriate response if you find one on your vegetable plants is to pick it off and place it elsewhere, not to spray.

Check for egg masses on nearby tree trunks during winter and early spring: they’re rusty to pale brown, oval, and covered in a spongy felt-like layer. Each mass holds 500 to 1,000 eggs [5]. This is the easiest stage to control — egg masses can be scraped into soapy water and destroyed before hatching in April.

Beneficial Caterpillars: The Ones Worth Protecting

Several caterpillar species that gardeners routinely mistake for pests are actually the larval stages of pollinators and beneficial insects. Removing them is actively counterproductive.

Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus): The monarch caterpillar is unmistakable: vertical yellow, black, and white stripes on a pale body, with a pair of long black filaments projecting from each end (front and back). It feeds exclusively on milkweed (Asclepias species) — if it’s on any other plant, it’s crawling there to pupate, not to feed. Don’t relocate it. Don’t spray anywhere near it.

Black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes): Mature larvae are smooth and green with black bands crossing the body at regular intervals, each band marked with yellow or orange spots. Young larvae are black and spiky. This caterpillar feeds on plants in the carrot family — parsley, dill, fennel, wild carrot — and finding it on your herb garden is genuinely a sign of a healthy garden ecosystem. One or two won’t significantly harm a healthy parsley plant.

Tomato hornworm / sphinx moths: These large green caterpillars with a rear horn are genuine pests on tomatoes, but their adult form — the five-spotted hawk moth — is among the most effective night pollinators in the garden. If you find a hornworm with small white oval structures attached to its body, those are cocoons of the parasitic wasp Cotesia congregata. Leave the caterpillar in place: the wasp larvae are already killing it, and removing it disrupts the wasp lifecycle.

When and How to Remove Brassica Pest Caterpillars

When NOT to treat: Fewer than 10% of leaves show damage and you find no frass (the dark green pellet-shaped excrement caterpillars leave behind) on inner leaves — scout for two more days before acting. If a caterpillar you’ve found has wasp egg clusters or cocoons attached, treatment is unnecessary because it won’t survive to reproduce. Don’t spray after you’ve passed harvest on that section of the crop.

Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk): The most selective caterpillar control available. Btk works only when ingested by feeding caterpillars; it releases toxins that cause caterpillars to stop feeding and starve within 1 to 3 days [3]. It has a 0-day pre-harvest interval and breaks down in UV light within 24 to 72 hours. Apply in the evening to reduce exposure to non-target caterpillars actively feeding during daylight.

Important: Bt kills any caterpillar larva that ingests it, including monarch and swallowtail larvae. Apply only where you’ve confirmed a pest population on brassicas — not as a preventive spray across the whole garden.

Spinosad: Faster than Bt. Caterpillars stop feeding within minutes and die within 48 hours of contact [3]. More effective on larger, late-instar caterpillars that Bt sometimes misses. One-day pre-harvest interval. Can harm bees and beneficial insects when wet — apply in the early evening after forager activity has stopped.

Hand-picking: The most selective method and genuinely effective on small plots. Wearing nitrile gloves, check leaf undersides for tiny caterpillars and conical yellow eggs (imported cabbageworm), and part the heads of cabbage weekly for loopers and cabbageworms that have moved inside. Diamondback moth larvae tend to fall off when disturbed — hold a container of soapy water beneath the leaf before examining it. Scout every 2 to 3 days during peak season (late May through September).

Row covers: The only intervention that actually prevents infestation rather than treating one. Fine-mesh floating row cover physically excludes the adult moths and butterflies from reaching leaves to lay eggs. On brassicas, which don’t require insect pollination, you can leave covers in place from transplant through harvest. Remove, wash, and store covers to reuse each season.

Habitat for natural enemies: Planting sweet alyssum, parsley, dill, fennel, and buckwheat near your brassicas supports populations of parasitic wasps and tachinid flies that attack caterpillar eggs and early instars. Clemson Cooperative Extension identifies this as one of the most durable management strategies over the long term [1] — a well-supported natural enemy population works continuously without any action on your part.
