Why It Happens
Jade plant root rot starts with saturated soil, not a pathogen. When potting mix stays waterlogged, oxygen is displaced from the soil air pockets that roots depend on for cellular respiration. Roots begin to suffocate within hours. Phytophthora and Pythium are not true fungi. These enzymes break the structural glue between cells from the inside out, causing tissues to collapse into the characteristic mushy, water-soaked mass that gives the disease its name. Diagnosing It Quickly
The defining symptoms are: water-soaked translucent tissue that feels soft when pressed, discoloration ranging from cream to dark brown or black, and a strong unpleasant odor.
