Hortensia is the traditional European name for Hydrangea macrophylla — specifically the mophead form, with rounded, ball-shaped flower clusters. Deeply means saturating the root zone, not a surface sprinkle, so roots grow downward into consistently moist soil rather than staying near the surface where moisture fluctuates.
A common point of confusion: hortensia leaves wilt dramatically in afternoon heat even when the soil is moist. This is a temporary stomata-closure response — the plant reduces its leaf pores to slow water loss during peak heat. Check soil moisture 2–3 cm below the surface before reaching for the hose. If it is damp, wait until evening; leaves almost always recover on their own [2].

The Pruning Mistake That Costs You a Year of Blooms
Hortensias (H. macrophylla) bloom on old wood — the flower buds are carried on stems that grew the previous season. By the time you see buds swelling in late spring, they have been sitting on those stems since the previous late summer. The pigment responsible for blue coloration is delphinidin-3-glucoside, a specific anthocyanin compound. It turns blue only when it binds with aluminum ions inside the flower tissue [3].
Soil pH determines whether that aluminum is available. Below pH 5.5, aluminum dissolves into the soil water and is taken up by roots. One important constraint: color manipulation only works on H. macrophylla and H. serrata. White-flowered varieties and all other hydrangea species have genetically fixed flower colors that do not respond to pH or aluminum changes [2].

- Zones 5–6: protect stems with a loose cage of chicken wire filled with dry leaves to insulate buds through the critical late-frost window
Do not cut stems back in autumn for tidiness. Old flower stems provide a small degree of insulation to the buds below them and offer genuine winter garden interest in the meantime.

Why are my hortensia leaves wilting even though I watered yesterday?
Afternoon wilt in hot weather is a heat-stress response, not a watering failure. Hortensias close their stomata in high temperatures to slow water loss, and the leaves droop temporarily as a result. Test soil moisture 2–3 cm below the surface: if it is damp, leave the hose in the shed. Leaves almost always recover by morning without additional water.
Can I move an established hortensia to a better location?
Yes. Do it in early spring before growth emerges, or in early autumn after the plant goes dormant. Take as large a root ball as possible, replant immediately, water well, and mulch the root zone. Expect the plant to skip flowering in the year of the move as it re-establishes — a full growing season of root development is usually all it needs to resume blooming normally.
My pot hortensia is blue but the same cultivar turned pink in the ground — why?
Ericaceous compost in the pot maintains a low pH that keeps aluminum soluble and available, producing blue flowers. Alkaline garden soil — especially chalk or heavy clay — locks aluminum away, shifting flowers toward pink. A soil pH test before planting will tell you what you are working with and whether amendment is realistic or whether a container is the better long-term solution.
