Ficus benjamina (Weeping Fig)

The classic office tree, with arching branches and small, pointed oval leaves that give a graceful, tree-like silhouette. It reaches 1.5–3m indoors and remains the most widely sold indoor ficus in the UK and US. It is also the most demanding: benjamina is highly sensitive to changes in position, light level and temperature. Ficus benghalensis ‘Audrey’

The species to which the sacred banyan tree belongs. Outdoors, benghalensis develops aerial roots that descend to form secondary trunks and eventually creates India’s widest-spreading trees. Indoors, the ‘Audrey’ cultivar stays manageable at 1–2m, with large, soft, velvety leaves covered in fine hairs — completely unlike the glossy surfaces of elastica or the small leaves of benjamina. It is forgiving of imperfect conditions but needs more consistent moisture than elastica and dislikes prolonged dry spells. The decade-defining houseplant, with violin-shaped leaves reaching 45cm. Ficus binnendijkii ‘Alii’ (Sabre Fig)

The most overlooked species in this group and, for many UK and US homes, the most practical. Long, narrow, slightly drooping leaves give it a graceful silhouette similar to an olive tree or willow. Its distinguishing feature is light tolerance: ‘Alii’ performs adequately at interior light levels as low as 50 foot-candles, where most other ficus require 100–200 foot-candles to sustain growth (UF/IFAS [3]). Ficus benghalensis ‘Audrey’: Water when the top inch dries out — earlier than elastica. The large, thinner-textured leaves transpire more rapidly and the plant dislikes prolonged dry spells that cause wilting. Keep a more consistent schedule than you would for elastica.

Ficus benjamina: Maintain evenly moist compost during the growing season, checking every 7–10 days. Allow the top inch to dry before watering in winter (Clemson Extension [1]). Standing water in the saucer should not remain for more than an hour.
