Lavender doesn’t come true from seed. Take a lavender cutting too early and it’s softwood: new, succulent spring growth that roots easily but wilts fast and needs constant humidity to survive the process. Take it too late and it’s hardwood: mature, woody stem from a previous season that’s tougher to root at all. Semi-hardwood sits in between — current-season growth that’s firmed up enough to hold its shape but hasn’t fully lignified into hard, brittle wood [2] [8]. One more timing rule matters more than the calendar: take cuttings from stems with no flower buds on them, ideally right after a bloom flush [1]. A stem that’s putting energy into flowering isn’t putting energy into rooting. How to Take a 3-Inch Cutting

Pick a healthy, non-flowering side shoot and cut a 3 to 4-inch section just below a leaf node, using clean, sharp snips rather than tearing it off by hand [1] [2]. The node — where a pair of leaves attaches to the stem — is where the plant already has the highest concentration of the cells capable of becoming new roots, so cutting close to one gives the cutting the best starting material to work with.

The active ingredient in most rooting products is IBA (indole-3-butyric acid). Research on plant rooting biology has found that applied IBA converts into IAA — the plant’s own natural auxin — inside the cutting’s cells, and that conversion also releases nitric oxide, which further boosts the plant’s own auxin production and transports it down to the cut surface, where it triggers new root initiation [6]. That study was done in a lab model plant rather than lavender specifically, but the mechanism is the same one every rooting-hormone product on a garden center shelf is built around.

On concentration: Purdue Extension’s dosing guide puts herbaceous and softwood cuttings at around 1,000 ppm (0.1%) IBA, stepping up to 3,000–8,000 ppm (0.3–0.8%) for semi-hardwood and hardwood material [8]. A 3-inch lavender cutting taken at the semi-hardwood stage sits toward the lower end of that semi-hardwood range — a basic 0.3% rooting powder, the kind sold at almost any garden center, is the right strength. Dip just the cut end, tap off the excess, and plant immediately; hormone that sits exposed to air loses potency fast. Potting Mix, Humidity, and the Moisture Mistake Most Guides Get Backwards

Use a gritty, fast-draining mix — roughly equal parts perlite or coarse sand and a standard potting mix, or a 50/50 vermiculite-perlite blend [3] [8]. Skip garden soil and skip straight peat; both hold too much water around a stem that has no roots yet to use it. Insert the cutting an inch to an inch and a half deep, firm the mix around the base, and cover with a clear plastic bag or a propagation dome to hold humidity around the leaves while the roots are still absent [3].

Here’s where most propagation advice, including a lot of otherwise solid lavender guides, gives conflicting instructions: some say keep the mix constantly moist, others warn against overwatering, and few explain how those two pieces of advice fit together. A 2022 study published in the journal Horticulturae tested lavender cuttings under four substrate moisture levels over six weeks and found that the driest of the four tested conditions produced the worst results — under 10% of cuttings rooted, and more than half died. But the wettest condition tested wasn’t the winner either: the best rooting (53% and 47.2% across the two moister-but-not-saturated treatments) and the highest survival rate (83.3%) came from mixes kept lightly moist but allowed to approach dryness between waterings, not mixes kept constantly wet. The practical version: let the surface of the mix dry slightly to the touch between waterings — damp, not dripping, and never soggy for days at a stretch. That’s a different instruction from “keep the humidity dome on and mist daily,” and it’s the more accurate one for actual root formation, even though the humidity dome itself is still worth using to keep the cutting’s leaves from wilting.

The Tug Test: How to Know It’s Actually Rooted

“Wait until it roots” isn’t a useful instruction on its own, so here’s an actual test. Washington State University Extension describes a cutting as ready once it “resists a slight tug” — meaning when you gently pull upward, you feel resistance instead of the cutting sliding straight out [3]. At that point it typically has 2 to 3 roots around half an inch long, which is enough anchorage to survive being moved but not yet a full root system [3].

On timing: Colorado State University Extension reports lavender cuttings root in about three weeks under good conditions [1], while most independent growers and the Horticulturae moisture study both land closer to four to six weeks for a fully established root system [7]. Treat three weeks as the earliest you should even check, not the average — I’ve had cuttings that passed the tug test at three and a half weeks and others from the same batch that needed the full six, usually the ones with slightly thicker or more mature stems. Wood maturity varies more within a single midsummer cutting batch than most guides let on, so check individually rather than potting up the whole tray on the same day.

Potting Up and the First Few Weeks

Once a cutting passes the tug test, move it into its own 2 to 4-inch pot with fresh, well-draining potting mix [1] [3]. Handle the root ball as little as possible — the new roots are fragile and haven’t developed the tougher outer layer mature roots have. Water it in once to settle the soil, then go back to the same watering rule you used during rooting: let the surface dry before watering again.
