Root Pruning Container Plants: The Severity Test That Tells You When to Cut Roots (and When to Just Upsize the Pot)

Most root-pruning advice ignores severity. Here’s the 3-tier test for when cutting roots saves a pot-bound plant — and when it can kill one.

Pull a plant from its pot and find roots spiraling around the root ball like a coiled spring, and the instinct is to reach for a knife. That instinct is right about half the time. The other half, a root-bound plant just needs a bigger pot and a gentle hand — and cutting into its roots does more harm than the crowding ever would. The difference isn’t the plant’s age or how long it’s been in that pot. A pot-bound plant that’s only mildly circled and gets sliced anyway loses roots it didn’t need to lose. Why Circling Roots Can Eventually Kill a Plant

The reason this matters long-term, not just for this season’s growth, is what circling roots do to a stem as both keep expanding. Succulents are the most common mistake.
