If your garden is consistently moist and shaded, expect the later end of each range. In warmer or drier conditions, expect the earlier end. Is My Bleeding Heart Dead? How to Tell

They emerge slowly through April and May — often just as your bleeding heart is finishing its bloom — and reach full size by the time the bleeding heart foliage collapses. Frequently Asked Questions

Will my bleeding heart come back after a very cold winter?
In Zones 3–9, yes — the fleshy roots are hardy through sustained freezing. A 2–3 inch mulch layer insulates roots against temperature extremes. In Zone 9 and warmer, the plant may decline over time from accumulated summer heat rather than winter cold.

Should I fertilize bleeding hearts?
Generally no — heavy fertilization is not needed and can promote excessive foliage at the expense of flowers. A top-dressing of compost in early spring when shoots emerge is usually adequate.

Why did my bleeding heart disappear in May, not July?
