Thinning Cuts vs. Heading Cuts — and the Variety Rule That Changes Everything

A thinning cut removes an entire cane or branch back to the base or main stem. This is the primary tool for blueberry renewal. It eliminates old or crowding canes without stimulating excessive branching at the cut site, which keeps the plant’s energy flowing toward productive wood.
A heading cut removes only the upper portion of a stem. Expect very light fruit production for two full seasons before yields normalize.

Three Pruning Mistakes That Cost You Berries
Heading every cane instead of thinning. Shortening canes mid-stem rather than removing them at the base fills the plant with low-quality, twiggy growth. Thinning cuts are the default; heading cuts are the exception for specific crossing branches.
Pruning in fall or early winter. It feels productive in autumn, but any growth stimulated by fall cuts will be killed by winter cold. That dead wood then becomes a disease entry point. Wait until late winter, after the coldest weeks have passed.
