What a Sucker Is — and Why Your Plant Makes Them
A sucker is a shoot arising from root tissue or from the crown below soil level. It’s distinct from a water sprout, which emerges from old wood above the ground, and from a runner, which travels above the soil surface before rooting at nodes or tips.
The mechanism behind sucker formation is a shift in hormone balance. A plant’s growing tip produces auxin, a hormone that moves downward and actively suppresses lateral buds on underground root tissue — a process called apical dominance. Which Plants Sucker — and Which Come True

The critical question before severing any sucker is whether the parent plant grows on its own roots. On own-root plants, every sucker is a genetic clone of the plant above ground. Lilacs present the most nuance in this table. Standard Syringa vulgaris and most everyday cultivars are sold as own-root plants, grown from suckers or tissue culture. Their suckers come true. But some named cultivars selected for unusual flower form or bicolor colouring — particularly older exhibition types — have historically been grafted onto privet (Ligustrum) rootstock, which suckers aggressively and does not produce lilac flowers. If you’re uncertain about a specific plant, expose the stem base and check for a graft union: a swollen, knobby junction between 6 and 12 inches from soil level where bark texture changes noticeably. When to Take Suckers
Spring is the best general timing for most suckering plants. The RHS recommends it as the default precisely because plants are entering active growth, fibrous roots are forming at the sucker base, and the severed plant has a full growing season ahead to establish before its first winter. For lilac, target the period when soil temperatures are rising but before flower buds have fully opened — typically March to early April across USDA zones 3 to 7.
Raspberries require different timing because their fruiting canes (floricanes) are actively producing in summer. Disturbing the root system then reduces your harvest. The safe windows are early spring before growth resumes, or late autumn after the final harvest and leaf fall. Either allows the sucker to be moved while dormant, without competing with the fruiting cycle above ground.
Own-root roses can be moved in spring or autumn. In USDA zones 3–5, autumn transplanting is tight: suckers need several weeks to anchor before hard frost arrives. If you spot a promising rose sucker in August, mark it with a cane and return in spring rather than rushing a late-season transplant.
Avoid midsummer for all three plants. Heat stress combined with underdeveloped roots is a reliable formula for failure. If you discover a sucker in July, wait.
Severing and Transplanting a Sucker Step by Step

Lilac
First, confirm the parent plant is own-root using the graft-union check described above. Then use a garden fork — not a spade — to loosen soil in a ring around the sucker without prematurely severing its root connection. Work from the outside inward until you can see the stolon: the narrow underground stem linking the sucker’s root mass to the parent root system.
Sever the stolon as close to the parent root as possible using sharp secateurs or a clean knife. The longer the stolon left on the sucker’s side, the more fibrous roots are attached — this is the single most important factor in whether the transplant succeeds. Once severed, trim the stolon back to where the first fibrous side roots begin, then reduce the leafy shoot by roughly half its height. This isn’t cosmetic: the goal is to match the leaf area to the root system’s current capacity. A shoot twice as tall as the roots can sustain will desiccate rapidly in any warm weather.
Transport the sucker with roots immersed in water or kept wrapped in damp hessian. Plant without delay at the depth it was originally growing. Backfill with a mix of garden soil and compost, firm gently, and water in well. Hold fertiliser for the first four to six weeks.
Raspberry
Target sucker canes that have emerged at least 2 feet from the parent row — these have been growing independently long enough to develop their own modest root system. Dig 6 inches from the base of the selected cane, capturing the root ball that belongs to the sucker rather than following the root all the way back to the parent, which disturbs both plants unnecessarily.
Separate from the parent root with a sharp spade thrust vertically downward. Include as much native soil around the roots as the transplant allows — familiarity with the soil microbiome reduces the adjustment period. On an own-root rose, every shoot from the base or from root tissue nearby belongs to the named variety — there is no rootstock complication. Loosen soil around the sucker with a fork, trace back to the underground connection, and sever cleanly. A sucker with a well-developed root ball can go directly into prepared ground or a free-draining container mix (equal parts compost and horticultural grit). One with a thin root attachment does better potted in a sheltered spot for four to six weeks until new top growth confirms it has settled.
On a grafted rose, any shoot from below the graft union is rootstock. David Austin Roses advises hand-pulling rather than cutting: follow the shoot to its origin and pull firmly to remove the dormant buds at the base. Cutting stimulates regrowth; pulling does not. Do not attempt to propagate these shoots.
Aftercare Through the First Season
The most common mistake after transplanting a sucker is trusting the vigorous-looking shoot. Until the moment you severed it, that shoot was supplied entirely by the parent plant’s root system. The root ball you’ve moved is small relative to what it now has to support. RHS guidance specifically warns that very careful watering is needed in the first season because the roots are not well developed — and it’s right.
In practice, careful watering means checking 2 inches into the soil before adding more water. If it is moist at that depth, hold off. If it is dry, water thoroughly. The goal is consistent moisture without waterlogging, which impairs root respiration. In hot weather, a piece of shade cloth or loosely draped horticultural fleece over the shoot for the first two weeks reduces water demand while roots settle.
Mulch the base to 2 to 3 inches — compost, wood chip, or leaf mould — kept clear of the stem itself. This conserves moisture and buffers soil temperature during the critical first weeks. Hold fertiliser for the first month; heavy nitrogen feeding stimulates top growth the limited root system cannot sustain. Some leaf drop and temporary wilting in the first two to three weeks is normal as the plant adjusts its shoot area to its new root capacity. Resist the urge to water more heavily in response — check 2 inches down first.
When to Expect Flowers and Fruit
Lilac suckers typically take three to five years before they flower, depending on the size of the sucker taken and local growing conditions. A sucker with a substantial root mass from a mature, long-established plant will reach blooming size noticeably sooner than a thin single-stem shoot from a young bush. I’ve found it worth taking the extra time in spring to dig deeper and secure the largest sucker available — the difference in root mass between a quick tug and a careful excavation can easily translate to a year or two of earlier bloom. From a 20-year-old lilac, a well-rooted sucker carries something a nursery plant can’t offer: the genetic vigour of decades of establishment in a specific site.
Raspberries work on a two-year cane cycle. The suckers you transplant this spring are primocanes — first-year canes that grow vegetatively through the season. Those same canes become floricanes in their second summer and produce fruit. Transplanted raspberry suckers typically fruit in the season following planting, which makes this one of the most time-efficient propagation methods in the fruit garden. Expanding a 6-cane row to 30 canes over two or three springs costs nothing but effort.
Own-root roses establish their flowering rhythm over two to three seasons. The first summer after transplanting may produce limited bloom as the plant prioritises root depth over flowering. Second-season performance is usually substantially better.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do suckers need rooting hormone? No. Rooting hormone is formulated to trigger adventitious root formation in cuttings that have none. Suckers already have fibrous roots attached when you take them — applying hormone at this stage provides no benefit and is unnecessary.
Can I take suckers in autumn? For raspberries and own-root roses in zones 6 and warmer, yes. For lilacs in zones 3–5, autumn transplanting is risky unless you pot the sucker and overwinter it somewhere frost-free but cold (a cold frame or unheated garage), then plant out the following spring once growth resumes.
My sucker has no fibrous roots — should I still take it? Leave it in place. Instead, mound 3 to 4 inches of loose soil or compost over the stolon where it connects to the parent root.
