The reality is more nuanced, and in at least one well-documented case, the bestselling “mosquito plant” has been conclusively disproven by a published study. Certain perennial flowers do contain compounds that interfere with mosquito host-finding behavior. But most of them don’t work the way garden center marketing implies, and knowing the difference matters for anyone tired of being bitten on their own patio.

5 Perennial Flowers with Real Scientific Backing
Each of these perennials contains compounds with documented repellent mechanisms, confirmed through laboratory or controlled field research. These aren’t folk remedies — the evidence ranges from receptor-level studies to neurological mechanism papers.
1. Catmint (Nepeta × faassenii)
Catmint has more peer-reviewed support than any other perennial flower on this list — by a significant margin.
In 2001, entomologists at Iowa State University reported that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip (Nepeta cataria), was approximately ten times more effective than DEET as a spatial repellent against Aedes aegypti in controlled lab conditions. 4. Chrysanthemums (Tanacetum cinerariifolium)
The chrysanthemum family’s connection to insect control stretches back roughly 2,000 years — historical records describe use of dried Tanacetum cinerariifolium flower powder as an insecticide in Asia. The active compounds, pyrethrins, remain the basis of some of the most widely used botanical mosquito control products today.
A 2021 study in Nature Communications decoded pyrethrum’s dual repellency mechanism: a minor compound called (E)-β-farnesene (EBF) activates odorant receptor AaOr31 in mosquito antennae, while the major pyrethrin compounds simultaneously overstimulate voltage-gated sodium channels in the insect nervous system. Myth 1: The “Mosquito Plant” (Pelargonium citrosum) Is Worth Buying
Sold at garden centers under a name designed to imply mosquito control, Pelargonium × citrosum ‘van Leenii’ is the most persistent mosquito-plant myth in garden retail.
A 1994 study published in the Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association tested the plant directly against Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus in both field trials and laboratory conditions. Field tests found no statistically significant repellency. In laboratory cage tests, Culex mosquitoes actually rested on the plant’s leaves more than on control materials — attracted to it rather than repelled. [4]
The plant contains minimal citronellal and does not contain citronella oil despite its marketing name. It is a scented geranium with a pleasant citrus-like fragrance — fine for your garden aesthetically, but not a mosquito control strategy. If you see it labeled “mosquito plant” or “citrosa,” the name is marketing, not botany.
Myth 2: A Fragrant Garden Bed Keeps Mosquitoes Away
The intuition makes sense: if lavender smells strong to us, shouldn’t mosquitoes hate being near it? The problem is concentration and competition.
Mosquitoes track hosts using carbon dioxide plumes that extend dozens of feet, body heat, and lactic acid from sweat — signals your body produces continuously at levels plant volatiles from a garden bed simply cannot override at ambient distances. UF/IFAS researchers confirm that plant volatiles need to be concentrated into sprays to meaningfully interfere with mosquito host-finding behavior. Myth 3: Standing Water Matters Less Than Plant Choices
No garden article states this myth directly, but it’s implied by content that spends hundreds of words on plant selection without mentioning water management. A single overturned saucer, a clogged gutter section, or a container holding standing water for more than 3 days can support substantial mosquito breeding. - Crush or brush leaves before sitting outside. Volatile compounds are stored in leaf glands and need mechanical release. A quick brush of catmint stems or a crushed lemon balm leaf delivers far more active compound than an hour of sitting near the intact plant.
- Make a simple DIY spray. Steep 2 cups of crushed catmint or bee balm leaves in 1 cup of rubbing alcohol for one week, strain, and dilute 50:50 with water. Apply to exposed skin — do a patch test first on a small area. This delivers concentrated plant oil in a stable carrier.
- Plant in clusters, not singly. Three to five catmint plants together near a seating area create meaningful localized volatile concentration. A single specimen offers very little passive deterrence.
- Eliminate standing water first. Check saucers, gutters, birdbaths, and any container that holds water. Dump, drain, or treat with Bti mosquito dunks. This single step does more for mosquito pressure than every plant on this list combined.
