Garden Pea Trellis Ideas: Netting, Twine and DIY Supports That Maximize the Harvest

Pea tendrils can only grip supports under 3/8 inch wide, which rules out most thick posts and chain-link fence. Here are the five trellis types that work, with a step-by-step string trellis build and height guide by pea variety.

Most pea trellis failures come from one overlooked fact: pea tendrils are mechanical coilers that can only grip supports up to about 3⁄8 inch (1 cm) in diameter. Thick bamboo canes, T-posts and chain-link fence are simply too wide for tendrils to wrap. Peas that cannot grip fall over, pile on each other and produce half the pods they should. Getting the support diameter right is the single biggest variable in trellis performance — everything else is secondary.

Why Pea Tendrils Are Selective About Their Supports

Pea tendrils are modified leaflets — not vines, not hooks, not sticky pads. Each tendril is a slender filament that responds to physical contact by coiling (a process called thigmotropism). The coiling response is triggered within seconds of contact and the tendril reaches full tension over the following 24 hours, forming a tight spring-like grip.

The coiling only works on thin supports. Studies from the John Innes Centre on tendril mechanics show the contact threshold is roughly 3⁄8 inch (10 mm) diameter: below that, the tendril wraps successfully; above it, the contact area is too large for the tendril tip to initiate a curl. This is why:

  • A bare bamboo cane (typically 3⁄4 inch to 1 inch diameter) is too thick to grip — peas will lean against it but will not climb
  • Chain-link fence with 2-inch mesh is too coarse — tendrils fall through rather than wrapping a wire

Pea Netting

Polypropylene or nylon pea netting with 4-inch (10 cm) squares is the most reliable option for home gardeners growing tall climbing varieties. The netting strands are 1⁄16 to 1⁄8 inch thick — ideal for tendril coiling — and the 4-inch mesh allows tendrils to grow through a square before gripping the next horizontal strand. Attach the netting between two posts with the netting pulled taut. Loose netting sags under the weight of a full crop and the whole structure can topple. Secure the bottom edge to a ground-level stake or horizontal rod to prevent wind billowing. At the end of the season, snap off dried pea plants at soil level rather than pulling, which preserves the net for the following year.

Horizontal Twine on Posts

The most adaptable and low-cost option: drive wooden stakes or metal T-posts every 6 feet along the row, then run horizontal rows of jute or sisal twine (1⁄8 inch diameter) at 6-inch vertical intervals from ground level to the target height. Pea tendrils find and grip the horizontal strands as the plants grow upward. Use a figure-eight wrap at each post to stop strands sliding. Jute is a good choice because it composts at season’s end with the plant matter — no cleanup. For a permanent version, use galvanized wire strung between wooden posts; the wire can be re-tensioned each spring and lasts 10 or more years.

Bamboo A-Frame with String

Lean two bamboo poles together at the top (lashed with twine at the apex) and drive them into the soil at a 70-degree angle, repeating every 3 feet along the row to form an A-frame. Run horizontal twine between the uprights on both sides at 6-inch intervals. This setup gives you climbing surface on two faces, effectively doubling the yield per row-foot of garden bed. The angled structure is also more wind-stable than a vertical trellis under a heavy crop. Peas grown up both sides create a natural tunnel that is cooler at the base — an advantage in Zones 7 and above where spring warms quickly.

Welded Wire Cattle Panel

A 16-foot cattle panel arched over a row (secured to rebar stakes at each end) creates a tunnel trellis that peas climb both inside and outside. The welded wire grid has 6-by-8-inch rectangles — too large on their own for tendril grip — but attaching 4-inch netting along the inside face or running horizontal jute strands through the grid solves the diameter problem. The real advantage is structural: a cattle panel supports the full weight of a peak-production snap pea crop (which can be heavy) without bending. It also doubles as a cold-frame support — drape row cover over the arch in Zones 5–6 to extend the planting window by two to three weeks in both spring and fall.

Pea Sticks (Traditional Brushwood)

The oldest method: push branchy twigs from hazel, birch or any deciduous shrub directly into the soil around the pea row. Tendrils grip the thin branches immediately and the branching habit of the wood provides support in multiple directions. This approach is self-correcting — plants find their own path through the brush and rarely tip over even in wind. It works best for dwarf varieties (18–30 inches) because tall climbing peas outgrow most available brushwood. Source sticks from late-winter pruning and store them dry until planting time. Compost them with the spent plants at the end of the season.

Trellis Height by Pea Variety

Pea variety determines the required height more than any other factor. Undersized support is the leading cause of pea crops collapsing mid-season, when the plants are at maximum weight. Oregon State University Extension recommends sizing the trellis to at least the stated variety height plus 6 inches of clearance at the top.

In Zones 8–10, peas are a cool-season crop grown in fall and winter rather than spring. Install trellises in September or October for a November–February harvest. The same height rules apply.

How to Build a String Trellis in Under 30 Minutes

This simple horizontal string design costs under $15 for a 12-foot row and provides adequate support for all but the tallest snap pea varieties.

You will need: Four 6-foot wooden stakes (1×1 inch is sufficient); one ball of jute or sisal twine (1⁄8 inch); a mallet or hammer; scissors.

Step 1. Drive stakes into the soil at each end of the row and every 4–6 feet between them. Drive each stake at least 12 inches deep to resist the weight of a full crop; lean the end stakes outward 5 degrees so tension from the twine pulls them back to vertical.

Step 2. Tie twine to the first stake at 6 inches above soil level. Run it horizontally to each post and wrap once around each intermediate post before continuing. Tie off at the final stake.

Step 3. Repeat at 12 inches, 18 inches, 24 inches, and every 6 inches thereafter up to the target height. On taller structures (5–6 feet), add a vertical strand every 18 inches between horizontal rows to stabilize the mesh and give tendrils more grip points.

Step 4. Install the trellis before sowing or transplanting. Peas grow 1–2 inches per day in warm conditions and benefit from finding the first string row within 5 days of germination.

Mistakes That Cut Your Harvest

Installing after planting. Peas germinate in 7–10 days in soil at 45–65°F (7–18°C) and reach 6 inches in another week. By the time you notice them leaning, tendrils are already wrapping around each other and neighboring plants rather than the trellis. Always install support before or immediately after sowing.

Mesh that is too large. Any mesh over 6–8 inches square allows whole pea shoots to pass through rather than gripping the strand. The plant appears to be climbing but is actually threading through unsupported. By the time the crop is heavy, there is nothing holding it up. Stick to 4-inch mesh or horizontal strings at 6-inch intervals.

Overcrowding on one trellis face. University of Minnesota Extension recommends sowing peas 1 inch apart in double rows 6 inches apart, with the trellis running down the center. This gives each plant access to both faces and improves air circulation — a critical factor for reducing powdery mildew, which becomes severe when peas are dense and humid. A pea crop with good air movement typically extends harvest by 10–14 days compared to an overcrowded row.

Skipping the trellis for dwarf varieties. True dwarf types under 18 inches can manage without support in calm conditions, but even they perform better on a low brushwood or 24-inch netting panel. The self-supporting claim on seed packets assumes ideal spacing and no wind. A cheap pea stick framework added to a dwarf row costs nothing and prevents the flopping that invites slug damage at the soil level.

How far apart should trellis posts be? No more than 4–6 feet apart for wooden stakes; 6–8 feet for metal T-posts. Wider spacing allows the strings to sag under crop weight, especially after rain when wet pea vines and pods can be surprisingly heavy.

Can I use chicken wire for a pea trellis? Standard 1-inch hexagonal chicken wire works, though the mesh is smaller than ideal — tendrils find it but harvesting pods through the wire can be difficult. Welded wire panels with 2-by-4-inch rectangles are a better choice: large enough for hand access, small enough that tendrils find horizontal wires to coil around when supplemented with jute strands through the grid.

What do I do with the trellis after harvest? For netting and metal supports: snap off dry pea plants at soil level, compost them and store the support dry. For jute twine: cut down the whole system and compost it. For pea sticks: compost everything together. Leave the roots in the soil — pea roots fix atmospheric nitrogen and the nodules feed the next crop if left to decompose in place.
