Your Frost-Damaged Plant Probably Isn’t Dead: Use This Scratch Test to Know What Survives, When to Cut, and What Grows Back

Most frost-damaged plants survive if you don’t reach for the pruners too soon. A 10-second scratch test tells you what’s dead and what grows back.

Your garden looked fine yesterday. This morning, it looks like everything is dead — blackened, water-soaked leaves, collapsed flower stems, soft brown mush where there was green growth the day before.

Before you start pulling plants up and reaching for the shears, stop.

Most frost-damaged plants look worse than they are. The dark, limp foliage you’re seeing is surface-level cellular damage. The stems underneath — the living cambium layer that drives regrowth — are often perfectly intact. The roots and crown are almost always fine, even when the top growth looks completely gone.

The most common and most costly mistake after a frost is cutting back too aggressively, too soon. Dead foliage is insulating the living buds underneath. Pruning stimulates new growth at exactly the moment when another late frost could arrive to kill it.

Most people assume cold kills plants. The biology is more specific than that — it’s ice formation, not the cold temperature itself, that does the damage [4].

This happens because the fluid inside cells contains dissolved sugars, minerals, and proteins that act like antifreeze, lowering the freezing point compared to the more dilute water between cells [3]. Established, zone-hardy shrubs and trees usually come through with nothing worse than cosmetic damage. Cool-season annuals like pansies and snapdragons tolerate this range with minimal injury [5].

A moderate freeze — 25°F to 28°F — pushes into broader foliage damage on shrubs and herbaceous perennials. Woody stems of zone-appropriate plants usually survive, though you may see dieback at branch tips. One catch that catches many gardeners off guard: frost doesn’t require air temperatures below 32°F. On still, clear nights, plant surfaces can radiate heat away faster than the surrounding air warms them — meaning your plant tissue can reach 32°F when the thermometer reads 35°F [2]. This is why frost damage sometimes appears after nights that didn’t seem threatening.

The Scratch Test: The One Tool You Actually Need

Before cutting a single stem, do the scratch test. This takes under a minute and tells you exactly where living tissue ends and dead tissue begins.

Using your fingernail or a small, clean knife, scratch a small patch of bark from a damaged-looking stem. You’re exposing the cambium layer — the thin band of actively dividing cells that sits just under the bark and drives all new growth. This tissue stays bright green and slightly moist when it’s alive. If it’s brown, tan, or black and dry, that section of stem is dead [7].

Work from the tip downward toward the base, testing multiple points along each stem. Note where the tissue transitions from brown to green — that transition zone is where you’ll eventually prune, cutting just below it into clearly living wood.

A few practical cautions:

Wait at least 2–3 days after the frost before testing. Damage continues to develop during the thawing process, especially when overnight temperatures remain near freezing. A stem that gives an unclear reading today will often show a definitive result by day three or four.

Don’t stop at the first green section. A stem can have patches of viable cambium with dead sections further down. Continue testing until you find reliably green tissue for several consecutive spots.

Check the crown at soil level. Even if everything above ground tests dead, the crowns and root systems of perennials are often alive. Scratch the very base of the stem where it meets the soil. Green cambium there means the plant will push new shoots from the crown in spring [8].

For bulbs and rhizomes — dahlias, cannas, tulips, daffodils — the scratch test doesn’t apply. Assume them alive and wait for spring emergence before drawing any conclusions.

The most counterintuitive entry on that table is tender bulbs. A dahlia with every leaf turned black looks finished — but the tuber underground almost always survives as long as the ground itself didn’t freeze solid. The same is true of cannas. The RHS advises waiting until mid-summer before declaring any plant definitively dead, because recovery from the crown and root system can appear weeks later than expected [6].

Early spring bloomers — magnolias, forsythia, rhododendrons, flowering cherries — are a common point of confusion after a late frost. The blackened blossoms look alarming, but the plant itself is almost never in danger. You’re losing this year’s bloom display on those branches, not the plant [5].

What You Can Safely Cut Right Now

Not all pruning needs to wait. Some cuts are appropriate immediately after frost damage.

Broken or hanging branches. Any branch that’s cracked or structurally compromised creates a safety or disease risk. Cut clean to a lateral branch or the branch collar. Don’t leave stubs.

Leave alone for now: any woody stem you haven’t scratch-tested; any herbaceous perennial with a green crown at soil level; any stem showing green cambium anywhere along its length; the entire above-ground structure of dahlias, cannas, and tropical plants.

What to Wait On — and Why Pruning Too Soon Costs You Plants

University extension programs are consistent on this point: do not prune frost-damaged woody stems until after your area’s last frost date [1][2].

The reason isn’t caution for its own sake. Pruning is a growth trigger. It signals the plant to push new tissue from the cut point — and that soft, fast-growing new growth is exactly what a late frost will kill. You’d be trading protected dormant buds for vulnerable fresh shoots exposed to the same temperatures that just caused the damage.

The dead foliage itself is working in your favor. UC ANR confirms that damaged foliage left in place insulates the living crown and buds below [1]. It looks terrible, but it’s doing a real job. Remove it too early and you remove that buffer.

Zone-based guidance for when it’s safe to prune:

  • Zones 3–4 (Minnesota, Dakotas, Wisconsin highlands): last frost mid-to-late May — wait until early June to be safe

I’ve seen this play out firsthand: a butterfly bush that was cut back aggressively in late March pushed a flush of new growth by mid-April — and lost all of it to an unexpected 28°F night a week later. The same species left untouched in a neighboring bed bounced back cleanly in May without any intervention. Timing is everything.

For tender perennials like dahlias and cannas, the RHS recommends waiting even longer — into mid-summer — before deciding a plant is unrecoverable [6]. These species can push new growth from the crown far later than expected.

As growth begins to emerge, you may notice that the first new leaves come in pale or yellowish. Water steadily, but don’t overcompensate. Frost-damaged plants have less foliage and therefore lower water demand than before the frost event. Maintain consistent soil moisture — let the top inch dry slightly between waterings — but resist the urge to water heavily to “help.” A stressed root system absorbs less efficiently; overwatering adds unnecessary pressure [1].

Hold fertilizer for 4–6 weeks. This runs counter to instinct, but fertilizing immediately after frost pushes rapid, tender new growth that’s the most vulnerable to any late cold snap. Protect newly exposed bark.
