Marigolds, Nasturtiums, Zinnias, and Yarrow: 4 Companion Flowers That Work as Trap Crops, Repellents, and Predator Habitat

Most companion planting advice treats flowers as afterthoughts — a marigold border here, a nasturtium there. But these four flowering plants protect your vegetable garden through completely different mechanisms, and understanding which does what makes the difference between scattered hope and a system that actually works.

Marigolds emit volatile compounds that interfere with whitefly host-finding. Nasturtiums function as deliberate sacrificial plants, pulling aphids away from crops you actually want to harvest. Zinnias and yarrow build populations of the natural enemies that hunt your pests. None of these roles overlap — which means planting all four creates layered, multi-mechanism protection that no single plant can match. Marigolds: Limonene Repellent and the Nematode Rule Everyone Gets Wrong

French marigolds (Tagetes patula) are probably the most planted companion flower in vegetable gardens — and also the most misunderstood. They do repel one important pest, but not in the way most guides describe, and the nematode benefit only works under conditions most gardeners never meet.

The limonene mechanism. A 2019 study published in PLoS ONE tested large-scale intercropping of French marigolds alongside tomatoes in a commercial-scale glasshouse in Yorkshire. Limonene made up 24% of the volatile output from marigold flowers and 21% from the leaf tissue. When marigolds were planted alongside tomatoes from the seedling stage, whitefly colonisation on the tomatoes was significantly lower from day 34 onwards compared to control plants grown without marigolds [1].

The mechanism: whiteflies use airborne volatile cues to locate suitable host plants. Limonene interferes with that navigation, slowing the rate at which a whitefly population builds on tomatoes planted nearby. Critically, the study used greenhouse conditions. Outdoors, constant air movement dilutes the volatile plume quickly — which is why planting a dense ring of marigolds around a tomato bed, rather than one plant every few feet, produces a more consistent effect in open gardens.

The nematode myth. The most repeated claim about marigolds is that planting them near vegetables suppresses root-knot nematodes. This is only half true — and the half that matters is almost always left out.

French and African marigolds (T. patula and T. erecta) do produce alpha-terthienyl, a compound toxic to root-knot nematodes. But according to Clemson Cooperative Extension, they only suppress nematode populations when planted as a solid cover crop with plants no more than 7 inches apart, grown for a minimum of two months, and then tilled into the soil [2]. A handful of marigolds intercropped with tomatoes produces essentially no nematode suppression — the density and duration thresholds are not met.

If nematodes are your primary problem, plant French marigolds wall-to-wall the season before your vulnerable crops. Cultivars bred specifically for nematode suppression include ‘Single Gold’ (marketed as ‘Nema-gone’), ‘Tangerine,’ and ‘Lemon Drop.’ Rotate the marigold cover crop to the same bed every other year as long as the problem persists, then plant your nematode-sensitive crops — tomatoes, peppers, squash — the following spring.

As border companions around actively growing vegetables, marigolds still earn their spot: they attract ladybugs, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps that do useful work on aphids and caterpillar eggs. But frame that as a bonus, not the primary benefit.

Nasturtiums: The Deliberate Sacrifice

Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus) are one of the few companion plants that protect vegetables by attracting pests rather than repelling them — a strategy called trap cropping, and it’s more effective than it sounds.

Aphids genuinely prefer nasturtiums over most common vegetables. The foliage contains glucosinolates — peppery sulfur-containing compounds — that certain aphid species find more compelling than the sap in your beans or brassicas. The result is that aphids arriving in your garden often colonise nasturtiums first and in higher numbers. You’ve concentrated the problem in one place instead of letting it spread across the plot.

Nasturtiums also attract flea beetles, cucumber beetles, and squash bugs in the same way — the foliage gives them what they want before they find your cucumbers or kale. A 2008 study from Kentucky State University, published in HortTechnology, documented a reduction in cucumber beetle populations in melon plantings that included nasturtium intercropping [4].

Common aphid species drawn to nasturtiums include the melon aphid (Aphis gossypii), green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), and potato aphid (Macrosiphum euphorbiae).

Placement matters. Position nasturtiums 4 to 5 feet from the crops you’re protecting — close enough that arriving pests find them before locating your vegetables, but not so close that pests on the nasturtiums can hop directly across. Planting them upwind of your vegetable beds is more effective for flying insects, which follow scent plumes upwind to their source [5].

The step most gardeners skip. Trap cropping only works if you actively manage the trap. Once nasturtiums become heavily infested — covered in aphids with populations building — remove the plants entirely. Bag them and dispose of them away from the garden; don’t compost them. If you leave heavily infested nasturtiums in place, the aphid population reaches critical density and the pests begin dispersing to surrounding plants, turning your trap crop into a pest nursery.

Nasturtiums keep producing new growth through the season even under pest pressure, so a plant you trim back after an aphid wave will keep growing and functioning. Check them every week or two during peak season (midsummer in most US zones), and treat heavy infestations with a hard spray of water to knock insects off before they reach removal threshold.

Zinnias: The Predator Restaurant

Zinnias don’t repel pests or trap them. Their role in the companion planting system is different: they feed and sustain the insects that hunt your pests.

The key is flower architecture. Zinnia flower heads are wide, flat platforms with a central disc of tiny individual florets. This structure gives small-bodied beneficial insects — parasitic wasps, hoverflies, lacewings — easy access to nectar and pollen in a way that tubular or fully double flowers do not. Single-flowered zinnia varieties like ‘Profusion’ or older open-pollinated types are more accessible to these insects than fully double pompom forms where the nectar is buried under layers of petals.

The predators attracted to zinnias include:

  • Parasitic wasps (multiple families): lay eggs inside or on aphids, caterpillar eggs, and whitefly nymphs, killing them from the inside out. Adults feed on zinnia nectar.
  • Hoverflies (Syrphidae): adults feed on zinnia pollen and nectar; larvae are voracious aphid predators, consuming large numbers of aphids before pupating.
  • Lacewings: adults feed on pollen and honeydew; larvae are aggressive generalist predators of aphids, thrips, and small caterpillars.
  • Ladybugs: adults and larvae both consume aphids in significant quantities throughout the season.

Plant zinnias in drifts of at least 6 to 9 plants rather than as isolated individuals — a larger patch provides more consistent nectar supply and draws higher predator densities. Deadhead spent blooms every 10 to 14 days to keep flowering going from midsummer through first frost. In USDA zones 3 to 10, zinnias are direct-sown after last frost; they establish fast and begin flowering within 6 to 8 weeks of germination.

Yarrow: The Permanent Insectary

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is the one perennial in this group, which changes the economics entirely. You plant it once and it returns every year as a permanent piece of your pest management system.

Like zinnias, yarrow works by supporting predatory insects. Its flat-topped flower cluster (botanically a corymb) is made up of dozens of tiny individual florets arranged in a landing-pad formation. This flat, accessible structure is particularly well-suited to parasitic wasps and tachinid flies, which have short mouthparts that can’t reach nectar in deep tubular flowers [3].

Tachinid flies deserve a specific mention. These bristly, housefly-like insects are parasitoids of squash bug nymphs, tomato hornworm larvae, cabbage loopers, and corn earworm — some of the most damaging pests in a summer vegetable garden. Adult tachinid flies feed heavily on yarrow nectar; without nearby flowering plants like yarrow, they may not establish populations in your garden at all.

Other regular yarrow visitors include parasitic ichneumonid wasps, syrphid flies (hoverflies), soldier beetles, and various native bees [3]. Yarrow blooms from May through September in USDA zones 3 to 9 — one of the longest bloom windows of any perennial companion plant.

Plant yarrow at the perimeter of your vegetable garden or in a permanent border adjacent to the plot. It spreads by rhizome over time; divide clumps every two to three years to control spread and refresh vigor. White-flowered forms of A. millefolium are native to North America and tend to attract the broadest range of native beneficial insects; yellow and pink cultivars work well too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do marigolds repel aphids?
There is no reliable research evidence that marigold scent repels aphids in the open garden. UC IPM has not found a documented deterrent effect on aphids from marigold volatile compounds. Marigolds are worth planting for whitefly suppression near tomatoes (best in enclosed or sheltered growing spaces) and for attracting beneficial insects, but don’t rely on them as an aphid barrier.

How far should nasturtiums be from my vegetables?
Four to five feet is the sweet spot. That’s close enough for aphids and flea beetles arriving on the wing to find the nasturtiums before locating your crops, but far enough that pests concentrated on the nasturtiums won’t immediately disperse across to your beans or brassicas. Plant them upwind of your main beds when possible.

Which zinnia varieties work best for beneficial insects?
Single-flowered and semi-double varieties give beneficial insects the best access to nectar and pollen. ‘Profusion’ series, ‘Zowie Yellow Flame,’ and standard open-pollinated types work well. Fully double cactus-flowered zinnias are beautiful but their nectar is less accessible to small-bodied parasitic wasps and hoverflies.

Will yarrow take over my garden?
It can spread aggressively in good soil. Plant it where you can let it naturalise as a border, or contain it in a raised bed section. Dividing the clump every two to three years keeps it in bounds and produces new plants you can place elsewhere in the garden.

The Layered Defense

Each of these flowers fills a role the others don’t. Marigolds produce a volatile shield that slows whitefly colonisation of nearby tomatoes. Nasturtiums pull aphids and flea beetles deliberately onto a plant you’re willing to sacrifice. Zinnias feed the parasitic wasps and hoverflies whose larvae consume pests throughout the season. Yarrow adds a permanent insectary that sustains tachinid flies and parasitic wasps year after year.

The combination is stronger than any single element. A garden bed ringed with marigolds, with nasturtium decoys 4 to 5 feet out, a drift of zinnias in the sunniest spot, and yarrow established along the permanent edge operates with multiple overlapping pest pressures simultaneously — no pesticides required.
