A stem left unsupported sprawls across the ground, stays vegetative, and rarely flowers. The moment it gains vertical traction, the plant channels energy upward, cascades its branches, and blooms.
That single distinction — climber, not tree — explains everything that follows. Dragon fruit needs a structural support before it goes in the ground, just as much as it needs soil. Training, Pruning, and the Flowering Trigger
Dragon fruit requires two distinct types of pruning, and knowing which applies at each stage determines whether you see flowers.
Training pruning happens while the plant is climbing. Remove every lateral branch that sprouts along the main stem — all of them, without exception — until the stem reaches the top of the trellis. Laterals at this stage divert energy away from the vertical climb and delay flowering by months. Once the main stem clears the cap and starts to cascade, allow 3 to 5 strong branches to develop and hang downward from the platform [1].
Why cascading branches? When apical dominance is removed from the tip of a downward-hanging branch, flowering sites activate along the stem.
