The fruit runs 1.5 inches across and weighs about 2 ounces, which puts it at the upper end of cherry tomato sizing and into cocktail tomato territory. Flesh is bright red, crack-resistant, and juicy. The Cornell Research Behind TomatoGuard

TomatoGuard is not a single gene or an off-the-shelf disease treatment. It is the commercial packaging of resistance genetics that took two decades to develop at Cornell University — and understanding where it came from explains why it works differently from the single-disease resistance genes you find in most modern hybrids.

For most of the 20th century, tomato breeders focused disease resistance on the pathogens most likely to destroy a commercial crop in a single season: fusarium wilt, verticillium wilt, and root knot nematodes. The three major foliar fungal diseases — Septoria leaf spot (caused by Septoria lycopersici), early blight (Alternaria solani), and late blight (Phytophthora infestans) — were managed almost entirely through fungicide schedules, often weekly applications from mid-summer through harvest. Organic growers had copper sprays; conventional growers had a wider range of options. Both spent significant time and money on applications that treated symptoms rather than addressing the underlying plant vulnerability.

The scale of the problem became undeniable in 2009, when late blight swept through the entire Northeast United States, destroying tomato crops from Connecticut to Maine. For many small farmers and home gardeners, that season was a complete loss. The pathogen moved through fields in days.

Starting in 2005, Dr. Martha Mutschler-Chu at Cornell’s School of Integrative Plant Science began systematically transferring disease resistance from wild tomato relatives into cultivated varieties adapted to Northeast growing conditions. By 2013, she released Iron Lady F1 — the first hybrid tomato with what she called “triple resistance”: actual resistance to late blight and Septoria leaf spot, plus tolerance of early blight. She was direct about why all three matter together: controlling only one or two diseases still leaves growers on the same weekly spray schedule because the uncovered pathogen fills the gap.

How the resistance mechanisms work

Late blight resistance in BadaBing works through the Ph2 and Ph3 genes — the pairing that the Northeast IPM Center describes as the gold standard of late-blight resistance. Together, Ph2 and Ph3 significantly limit Phytophthora infestans’s ability to complete its infection cycle, providing high-level resistance.

Septoria resistance works through a different mechanism, and this distinction matters for how you manage the plant. Two important gaps in the resistance profile: BadaBing has no listed resistance to bacterial spot (Xanthomonas vesicatoria) or to tomato leaf mold (Cladosporium fulvum). Bacterial spot causes similar-looking leaf damage to bacterial speck but is a separate pathogen, common in warm wet conditions across the Southeast. Leaf mold is primarily a tunnel and greenhouse disease but can affect outdoor gardens in persistently humid climates. If either has been a recurring problem in your garden, standard management — copper-based sprays for bacterial spot, improved airflow and spacing for leaf mold — remains relevant even with BadaBing planted.

“Intermediate resistance” is also worth understanding correctly before you plant. It means significantly reduced disease severity, not immunity. In a severe Septoria or early blight year with extended wet weather and heavy pathogen pressure, some lesions are possible. The disease simply won’t advance through the canopy the way it does on a susceptible plant.

Planting BadaBing: When, Where, and How

Starting from seed

Start seeds indoors 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost date, sowing ¼ inch deep in seed-starting mix. Germination happens fastest with soil temperatures at 70 to 80°F — a seedling heat mat helps if your indoor environment is cool. Thin to one plant per cell after emergence; seedlings competing in one cell produce weaker transplants.

Timing by region

The four AAS award regions give you a practical starting framework. Great Lakes and Heartland gardeners (zones 5 to 7) typically transplant from mid-May into early June. Mountain and Southwest growers vary considerably by elevation and valley location — zone 4 gardens at altitude transplant late May to early June; low-elevation desert gardens may transplant as early as late March for a pre-summer-heat crop. Southeast gardeners (zones 7 to 9) work with a late March through April transplant window to capture the spring before summer heat peaks.

Wait until consistent overnight temperatures hold above 50°F and soil has warmed past 60°F before setting transplants outdoors. Bury the stem deeper than it was growing in the pot — tomatoes form roots along any buried portion of stem, building a stronger, more drought-tolerant root system. Cover the stem up to the lowest set of leaves.

Site and spacing

Full sun is non-negotiable: 6 or more hours of direct sunlight per day. Space plants 24 inches apart within rows and 3 to 5 feet between rows for in-ground beds. Even with a disease-resistant variety, tight planting reduces airflow through the canopy and increases the humidity that foliar pathogens exploit. Adequate spacing keeps disease pressure manageable on top of what TomatoGuard does genetically.

Soil preparation

Work in compost or aged organic matter before planting. BadaBing performs best in soil with pH 5.8 to 6.6; outside this range, nutrient uptake is compromised regardless of how well you fertilize. Temperature, Watering, and Feeding

Temperature thresholds

BadaBing’s optimal growth range is 65 to 85°F. Above 95°F, the plant stops growing — leaves curl inward, blossom set stops, and no additional water or fertilizer compensates for the heat stress. In zones 8 and 9, July and August typically push past this threshold for weeks at a time. Mulching the soil surface reduces root-zone temperature meaningfully during these periods; shade cloth over the plant during peak afternoon heat in the hottest weeks can protect blossom set.

Night temperatures matter when fruit approaches harvest. When nights consistently stay above 85°F — common in the deep South from late June through August — tomatoes cannot complete the pigment conversion that turns fruit uniformly red. The fruit ripens but stays orange-red or pinkish. This is not a disease symptom and not caused by TomatoGuard’s resistance acting on anything. It resolves naturally as nights cool back into the 70s in early fall.

Watering

Target 1 to 2 inches of water per week as a deep soak at soil level, not a daily sprinkle. Consistent soil moisture is more important than watering frequency — tomatoes in fluctuating wet-dry cycles develop blossom end rot even in crack-resistant varieties. According to UF/IFAS Extension, one heavy weekly soaking outperforms frequent light applications for consistent tomato production.

Deliver water at soil level rather than overhead. Feeding

Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer at transplanting. Once the first fruits begin sizing up, shift toward a lower-nitrogen formula. Excess nitrogen at this stage pushes leafy vegetative growth at the expense of fruit production, and dense foliage also increases disease pressure in the canopy.

Staking and Training BadaBing

At 36 to 40 inches, BadaBing is compact compared to a standard indeterminate cherry tomato — but it is still indeterminate. It will not stop growing on its own. An unsupported plant sprawls, pushing fruit toward the soil where Septoria and early blight concentrations are highest, and where TomatoGuard’s protection is most easily overwhelmed by continuous exposure.

Install support at planting time rather than after the plant starts falling over. Options: a sturdy tomato cage at least 18 inches in diameter and 4 feet tall, or a 5-foot wooden or metal stake. Rutgers Extension recommends driving stakes 12 inches into the soil for stability. For the stake-and-weave method, add the first support string when the plant reaches 12 to 15 inches tall, positioning it 8 to 10 inches above the soil line just below the first flower cluster. Follow with additional support strings every 6 to 8 inches as the plant grows — typically 3 to 4 strings total for BadaBing’s height.

Growing BadaBing in Containers

BadaBing’s compact indeterminate habit makes it genuinely workable in containers, where full-size indeterminate cherry tomatoes typically become unmanageable by mid-summer. Use a minimum 5-gallon container with drainage holes — smaller containers dry out faster than roots can tolerate in summer heat. A standard 5-gallon bucket or pot works; a 7 to 10-gallon container gives a wider moisture and nutrient buffer.

Fill with a high-quality potting mix, not garden soil. Garden soil compacts in containers, restricts drainage, and can introduce soilborne diseases — including the pathogens TomatoGuard is designed to limit. Container-grown plants need more frequent watering than in-ground beds because the smaller soil volume heats up faster and holds less total moisture. Check daily during summer and water when the top inch of soil is dry.

Feed every two to three weeks with a liquid vegetable fertilizer since nutrients leach more quickly from pots than from garden beds. One advantage of container growing is that soil-splash disease transmission — the primary spread mechanism for Septoria and early blight — is minimal in most container setups, which means TomatoGuard’s genetics operate without the soil-vector that can overwhelm resistance outdoors.

Harvest, Flavor, and Storage

From transplant, expect your first ripe fruit at 65 days in warm ideal conditions — up to 75 days in cooler climates or a cool summer. Fully ripe BadaBing fruit is uniformly bright red across the entire surface. A gently ripe tomato gives slightly when pressed; hard fruit needs more time. The crack-resistant skin gives you a wider harvest window than thin-skinned varieties — you can leave ripe fruit on the plant for a few additional days without losing it to cracking after rain or heavy irrigation.

Refrigerated tomatoes taste flat even after returning to room temperature because the enzyme damage doesn’t reverse. Pick regularly through the season. Leaving ripe fruit on the plant directs energy toward aging clusters rather than new fruit development on the upper portions.
