Why Your Poinsettia Drops Leaves, Wilts, or Won’t Turn Red — and How to Fix Each

Three Problems, Three Different Causes
A poinsettia that looked perfect in the store starts shedding leaves within a week of reaching your home. Another sits wilting in wet soil. A third, kept alive since last Christmas, stays stubbornly green. All three are “poinsettia problems” — but their causes have almost nothing in common, which means the fix for one actively harms another.
This guide covers each problem separately: what’s happening inside the plant, how to tell one cause from another, and when a poinsettia is simply too far gone to save. Start with the symptom that matches yours.
Dropping Leaves: Why It Happens and How to Stop It
Leaf drop is the most common poinsettia complaint, and the most misdiagnosed. Most people reach for the watering can. The actual culprit, in the majority of cases, is temperature.
When a poinsettia is exposed to temperatures below 55°F (13°C), it triggers its abscission response — the same mechanism that makes deciduous trees drop leaves in autumn. A specialized layer forms at the base of each leaf stalk, cutting off water and nutrient supply. Once that layer forms, the leaf will fall within 24–72 hours regardless of what you do with water or fertilizer. The RHS confirms that temperatures below 13–16°C cause physiological shock in poinsettias, often producing rapid leaf loss.

This is why so many plants start dropping leaves shortly after purchase. Even 10 minutes in a cold car with inadequate wrapping can trigger enough stress to start the process. If the store displayed the plant near an entrance or on a cold pavement before you bought it, the damage is already done — and no amount of good home care will reverse it.
Other causes of dropping leaves, in order of frequency:
Heating vent air. Warm, dry air blowing directly on foliage dries leaves faster than roots can replace moisture. Iowa State University Extension specifically flags furnace registers as a trigger equal to cold drafts. The fix is placement: keep the plant at least 3 feet from any vent, whether heating or cooling.
Ethylene gas from packaging. When plants stay tightly wrapped in foil sleeves or decorative covers for more than a day, ethylene — a natural plant hormone that accelerates aging — accumulates around the foliage at concentrations high enough to trigger drop. Remove any tight wrapping within 24 hours of purchase. Punch drainage holes in foil sleeves or replace them with a saucer.
Overwatering. Lower leaves yellow first, then fall. The sequence starts at the base because lower leaves lose function first when roots can’t oxygenate. The soil will feel consistently damp, and you may notice a stale smell or surface mold.
Underwatering. Leaves droop before they drop, and they fall from anywhere on the plant — not just the bottom. The soil feels light and bone-dry. Poinsettias have no water reserves in their stems, so they respond quickly to drought.
Low humidity. When indoor humidity drops below 30% — common near radiators in winter — leaf margins turn brown before the whole leaf drops. The plant is native to Mexican highland forests where humidity rarely dips this low.
When leaf drop is not fixable: If a plant loses more than a third of its leaves in the first week despite correct placement, the damage occurred before it reached you. Adding water or moving the plant won’t reverse pre-formed abscission layers. Replace the plant rather than trying to rescue a store-stressed specimen.

Wilting: The Diagnosis That Changes Everything
Wilting is the one symptom where getting the diagnosis wrong makes things significantly worse. Both too much water and too little cause identical-looking drooping — but the treatments are opposite.
Before you do anything, check the soil. This single step tells you which problem you have:
Dry soil + wilting = underwatering. Water thoroughly, allowing full drainage through the pot’s drainage holes. The plant should recover within a few hours as water reaches the roots. If it doesn’t recover after a full, thorough watering, check whether the root ball has become so dry it’s repelling water — in which case, submerge the pot in a bowl of water for 20 minutes to rehydrate the mix.
Wet or moist soil + wilting = root rot. This is the dangerous combination. Rotted roots cannot absorb water even when the soil is saturated, so the plant wilts in wet soil because it is effectively dying of thirst. Watering more accelerates the damage.
Tip the plant out of its pot to confirm. Healthy roots are white and firm. Roots infected with Pythium (the most common root rot pathogen in poinsettias) are brown-black, soft, and often smell musty. Recovery from root rot: If fewer than half the roots are damaged, cut out the brown sections with clean scissors, let the root ball air-dry for 30 minutes, and repot in fresh, well-draining potting mix. Do not water again until the top 2 inches of new mix feel dry. If rot has reached the stem base — visible as brown-black discoloration at soil level, or soft, mushy stems — recovery is unlikely. Replace the plant.

Iowa State University Extension recommends removing the plant from its sleeve before watering, draining fully in a sink, then replacing it. Skipping this step is the single most common cause of poinsettia root rot in home settings.

Bracts Won’t Turn Red: The Phytochrome Problem
If you kept a poinsettia from last year and the modified leaves (bracts) remained green no matter what you tried, the cause is almost certainly light — specifically, too much of it during the wrong hours.
Poinsettias are short-day plants, but that name is misleading. What they actually respond to is the length of the dark period, not daylight. The plant contains a pigment called phytochrome that exists in two interchangeable forms. During an uninterrupted dark period of 14 or more hours, phytochrome shifts to its active form and triggers the biochemical cascade that produces anthocyanin — the red, pink, or white pigment in the bracts. South Dakota State University Extension explains that phytochrome’s sensitivity is so precise that commercial growers use blackout cloth over entire greenhouse benches to control the timing.
The critical practical implication: even a brief flash of light during the dark period resets the phytochrome clock. The hall light coming on at midnight when someone goes to the kitchen, a streetlight visible through a thin curtain, a phone screen left in the room — any of these is enough to interrupt the process and keep bracts green. The darkness protocol for home growers:
Starting October 1, give the plant 14 consecutive hours of complete darkness every day — typically covering it at 5:00 p.m. and uncovering at 7:00 a.m. Utah State University Extension recommends a closet, cardboard box, or opaque bag. Maintain this for 6–8 weeks, which brings you to late November just in time for the holidays. During the remaining 10 hours of daylight, place the plant in bright indirect light.
Keep temperatures at 65–70°F during the day and in the low 60s at night during treatment. NMSU Extension documents that nighttime temperatures significantly above 65°F can inhibit bract coloring even with correct dark periods — so avoid placing the covered plant near a heat source.
Pests That Cause Leaf Problems
Three pests regularly trigger leaf drop and discoloration in poinsettias. All three operate the same way: piercing leaf cells to drain contents until the leaf can no longer sustain itself.
Whiteflies are the most common. Shake the plant — if a cloud of tiny white insects rises from under the leaves, you have whiteflies. They leave yellow stippling on the leaf surface and a sticky residue below. Treat with yellow sticky traps for adults and insecticidal soap applied to leaf undersides for eggs and nymphs. Spider mites thrive in the dry, warm conditions poinsettias often experience near winter heating. Look for fine webbing between leaves and characteristic stippling — tiny pale dots where mites have punctured the epidermis. Five Rules to Prevent Poinsettia Problems
Most poinsettia problems are avoidable with five consistent habits:
1. Buy from a well-maintained display. Reject any plant displayed near store entrances, on cold pavements, or in unheated areas. Press a bract gently — it should feel firm. Soft or slightly drooping bracts signal cold stress that’s already in progress.
2. Control temperature before anything else. Keep the plant at 65–70°F during the day and above 60°F at night. Away from heating vents, exterior walls, and windows where nighttime temperatures drop below 55°F. This one rule prevents the majority of poinsettia problems.
3. Water by feel, not schedule. Check the soil every 3–4 days. Water thoroughly when the top inch feels dry — but remove the plant from its decorative sleeve first and allow full drainage before replacing it. Never let the pot sit in standing water.
