Those spurs aren’t just decorative. Research by botanist Stefan Vogel established that each spur contains an elaiophore — an oil-secreting gland lined with specialised hairs [1]. The oil is harvested exclusively by female Rediviva bees, a southern African genus whose forelegs have evolved to be up to three times longer than normal, with soft velvety pads designed to absorb the fatty oil. Different Diascia species have spur lengths matched to specific Rediviva species — a textbook example of co-evolution.

Here’s the counter-intuitive part: Rediviva bees don’t exist in Europe or North America. When diascia grows in UK gardens, there are no compatible pollinators to collect the oil. The plant still blooms prolifically — arguably more so than in its native habitat — because it expends no energy on seed production. All resources go into flowering. Diascia barberae (Barber’s Twinspur)

Diascia personata (Masked Twinspur)

Diascia vigilis

Growing Conditions

Diascia is undemanding once you understand its cool-season preference.

  • Sun: Full sun or partial shade. In southern England, dappled afternoon shade helps extend flowering in peak summer.
  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile. Heavy clay is problematic — add grit or plant in raised beds. pH 5.5–6.5.
  • Watering: Consistent moisture but never waterlogged. Plants wilt quickly on hot days even with adequate soil moisture — this is heat stress, not drought.
  • Hardiness: Most species H3 (−5°C). D. personata is H4. Treat others as half-hardy annuals unless you’re in a frost-free area.

How to Grow Diascia from Seed: The Staggered Sowing Strategy

Most gardeners sow diascia once in late winter and enjoy a spring display that fizzles out in summer. There’s a better way: sow in two batches for a season-long show with a natural rest in between.

Sowing batch 1: Late January–February

Sow 10–12 weeks before your last expected frost. Press seeds onto the surface of moist, peat-free seed compost — diascia seed is tiny and needs light to germinate, so cover only with a fine dusting of vermiculite, not a layer of compost [5]. When your diascia seedlings or transplants have developed 4–6 true leaves, pinch out the growing tip between your finger and thumbnail, just above a leaf node. This breaks apical dominance — the plant’s tendency to put all energy into the central stem — and forces lateral buds lower down to break into growth. The result is a much bushier plant with multiple flowering stems rather than a single central spike.

Do this once at planting time. Upright species like D. rigescens and D. personata benefit most. For trailing types in hanging baskets, it’s less critical, but it still improves stem density and flower count.

Summer Cutback: The Key to a September Rebloom

This is the technique that separates gardeners who get one season from diascia and those who get two. It’s straightforward, but the timing and depth matter.

When: Mid-July in the UK — or whenever your plant has become leggy and flowering has slowed significantly. Don’t wait for the plant to look terrible; act while it still has some green structure. In mild summers or northern gardens, this cutback may be unnecessary, and plants will flower through to frost without intervention.

How: Using clean sharp scissors or shears, cut back all stems by approximately 50% of their current length. Don’t be timid — a half-hearted trim produces a half-hearted recovery. Cut into the green, leafy growth, not down to bare woody stems.

Why it works: Cutting back removes the spent flower spikes (which signal the plant toward seed production) and stimulates dormant buds in the lower leaf axils. As temperatures cool through August and into September, these buds break into rapid growth — and by mid-September, you’ll typically have a fresh flush of flowers that continues through October.

In August, a diascia in heat stress can look disturbingly similar to a dead plant. Many gardeners tip them out and replace them at exactly the moment they’re about to recover. Here’s how to read the signs accurately.

Signs of actual death:

If your plant shows dormancy signs, don’t discard it. Cut back as described above, reduce watering slightly, and move it somewhere with afternoon shade. As temperatures cool, recovery is typically rapid — new shoots appear within 2–3 weeks. Container plants are more vulnerable to both overheating (hot pot walls warm the root zone) and overwatering-induced root rot. Compost: Peat-free multi-purpose with 20–25% perlite or horticultural grit added. Standard compost alone retains too much moisture in cool, wet conditions and increases root rot risk.

Feeding: Apply a high-potash liquid fertiliser (tomato feed) every two weeks once flowering begins. Dilute slightly more than the label suggests — diascia responds to overfeeding with lush foliage and fewer flowers, which is the opposite of what you want.

Watering: Keep consistently moist but never standing in water. Check daily in warm weather; window boxes in particular dry out faster than deep pots. Water at the base rather than overhead — wet foliage in cool weather promotes botrytis.

Pot placement: Full sun in spring and autumn; dappled afternoon shade in July–August to reduce heat stress before the summer cutback.

Companion Planting

Diascia belongs to a cool-season flowering cohort — plants that share its preference for mild temperatures and its natural lull in peak summer. Pairing it with companions from this group means your display looks intentional rather than patchy.

Osteospermum (African daisy): Shares both the cool-season preference and the South African origin. Bold, open daisy flowers in white, yellow, orange, and purple make a strong contrast to diascia’s small, delicate blooms. Both enjoy well-drained, sunny conditions and both slow down in peak summer heat.

Scabiosa (pincushion flower): The soft, rounded flower heads of scabiosa work beautifully alongside diascia’s upright spikes. Pale blue S. columbaria ‘Butterfly Blue’ is a particularly effective pairing — both plants attract pollinators (though diascia’s oil-bee pollinators are absent in the UK, native bees still visit for any accessible nectar in the flower tube).

Verbena: A useful bridge plant. Verbena handles summer heat better than diascia, carrying the display through July while diascia recovers from its cutback. Choose trailing verbena for containers; upright Verbena bonariensis for borders, where its airy purple heads float above the diascia mounds in spring and again in autumn.

In border plantings, stachys (lamb’s ears) and catmint work well as foliage companions at the front — their bold texture or silver-grey leaf colour contrasts with diascia’s finer, glossier foliage without competing for attention.

Pests and Problems

Diascia is generally low-maintenance, but two pests cause the most trouble:

Slugs and Snails

The primary threat, especially to seedlings and freshly planted-out specimens. Slugs will shear off young plants at the base overnight. Protect with: ferric phosphate pellets (wildlife-safe and approved for organic growing), copper tape around pot rims, or wool mat mulch around individual plants in borders. Check young plants every evening for the first two weeks after planting — this is when they’re most vulnerable.

Aphids

Soft new growth after the summer cutback is particularly attractive to aphids — they cluster on shoot tips just when the plant is trying to regrow. In wet autumns, spent flowers and crowded foliage can develop botrytis — a grey fuzzy mould. Remove spent flower heads promptly, thin congested growth, and avoid overhead watering.
