That said, apple breeders in Israel, the Bahamas, and Florida spent decades solving this exact problem. Apple trees are temperature-sensitive at the hormonal level. Flavor is mild and pleasantly tart. Expect less consistent production than Anna in years when zone 10a does accumulate adequate cold.

  • Full sun: 6–8 hours minimum; 8+ hours for best fruit quality and sugar development
  • Air circulation: avoid low frost pockets where cold air settles (you want chill hours to accumulate, but stagnant humid air promotes fire blight and fungal disease)
  • Soil pH 6.0–6.5: test before planting; add lime if below 5.0 (4–6 lbs per 100 sq. ft.), or elemental sulfur if above 7.0 (1–2 lbs per 100 sq. ft.)

Fertilizing and Watering Zone 10 Apple Trees

UF/IFAS recommends a balanced 10-10-10 formula at 1 pound per year of tree age annually, up to a maximum of 15 pounds for mature trees. Split the annual application into two equal doses: the first in January through March as trees break dormancy, and the second in June. Never fertilize after August in zone 10.
