Treating the wrong disease wastes time while the real problem advances.

Root Rot: The Disease That Mimics Underwatering
Root rot is the most common pothos disease, and the most misdiagnosed. The above-ground symptoms — drooping, yellowing, a plant that looks thirsty — are identical to underwatering. The fastest field test I use: water the plant thoroughly and check it again in 12 hours. A water-stressed plant perks up noticeably. A root-rot plant stays droopy regardless of how much water you add.

The reason comes down to biology. When Phytophthora nicotianae or Pythium species colonize pothos roots, the plant genuinely cannot absorb water — even when the soil is saturated. Root cells need oxygen to produce ATP, the energy molecule that powers water and nutrient uptake. Saturated soil pushes oxygen out of the air pockets between soil particles. Roots begin dying from oxygen starvation first, then from pathogen attack second.
As the outer root layer (cortex) breaks down, it detaches from the inner vascular core, leaving behind a thin brown thread. This sloughing is the most reliable diagnostic sign: healthy roots resist firm pressure; rotted ones shed their outer layer at a touch.
What makes root rot spread rapidly is the zoospore. Both Phytophthora nicotianae and Pythium species are oomycetes — water molds, not true fungi — and they produce swimming zoospores that travel through water in the potting mix. Once your pot stays saturated, these zoospores reach healthy roots within hours. Simply watering less after you notice symptoms isn’t enough: the pathogen has already moved.

Root Rot Triage: Save or Propagate?
Whether a rescue attempt makes sense depends on how much of the root system is intact.
- A minority of roots are black or mushy — a rescue attempt is worth trying
- Most of the root mass is gone — propagate healthy stem cuttings instead; the mother plant is unlikely to recover
To rescue: unpot completely and shake off all old soil (never reuse it). Rinse the roots and cut away every dead root back to healthy tissue using sterilized scissors. Leaf Spot: Bacterial vs. Fungal
Pothos leaf spot is almost always bacterial, caused by Pseudomonas cichorii, Pectobacterium carotovorum, or Dickeya chrysanthemi. What sets bacterial spots apart from environmental damage is where they start and what they look like up close.
Bacteria enter through hydathodes — tiny natural openings along leaf margins that the plant uses to release water pressure. This is why bacterial leaf spots almost always begin at leaf edges or tips, not in the center of the blade. If your spots are appearing mid-leaf with no marginal progression, look for a different cause.
Early bacterial spots are water-soaked and translucent, often with a yellow halo. As infection progresses, they turn brown to black. The shape is angular rather than circular, following the spaces between leaf veins. Angular spots with yellow margins that begin at the leaf edge = bacterial. Round or irregular spots without a yellow ring = likely fungal or environmental.

Fungal leaf spot (early Rhizoctonia solani infection) looks different: dark, irregular spots with faint brown webbing visible at the margins when you look closely. These typically start where a leaf has direct contact with the potting mix or another infected leaf surface.
Treatment
Bacterial: No curative spray is practical for home growers. Remove all affected leaves and discard them — do not compost. If the infection has spread into the stem (soft, mushy, foul-smelling tissue), the plant is systemically infected and should be discarded entirely. For plants with only a few affected leaves, relocate to a space with better airflow and switch exclusively to base watering. Fungal (Rhizoctonia leaf spot): Remove all affected leaves. Lift the plant so no foliage contacts soil. Blight: Rhizoctonia Aerial and Southern
Two pathogens cause blight on pothos, and the visual diagnostic is straightforward once you know what to look for.
Rhizoctonia aerial blight begins when leaves contact infected soil or other infected leaves. Rhizoctonia solani lives in the top layer of potting mix and grows upward from the soil surface, producing large, irregular dark patches that expand rapidly. The diagnostic sign is brown mycelial webbing on the infected tissue — visible to the naked eye in humid conditions. Affected leaves mat together when multiple leaves are infected simultaneously. Warm temperatures above 70°F combined with high humidity accelerate its spread dramatically.

When Not to Treat Your Pothos
The most common mistake with pothos disease is treating a plant that doesn’t have disease at all. Repeated copper sprays accumulate in the potting mix and eventually become toxic to roots. Fungicide drenches applied to an overwatered plant with no pathogen disrupt beneficial soil microbes without solving anything.
Disease symptoms are almost always localised, water-soaked initially, and often accompanied by a faint smell. Environmental and nutritional problems look different:
- Yellowing starting uniformly from the bottom — likely nitrogen deficiency, not disease
- Dry, papery brown tips without water-soaking — usually underwatering or low humidity
- Brown patches in the center of leaves without a yellow ring — likely fertilizer salt burn
- Black spots only on variegated sections — sunburn from direct light

Prevention That Actually Works
The conditions that trigger pothos disease are consistent: saturated soil, prolonged leaf wetness, and poor air circulation. Address all three and most disease problems disappear.
Watering practice is the single most effective lever. Phytophthora and Pythium zoospores need standing water in the soil to move; dry intervals between waterings break their ability to spread. Let the top 2 inches of soil dry completely before watering. When you do water, water deeply and allow excess to drain within 30 minutes — empty the saucer. Bottom watering (from below) keeps leaf surfaces dry and dramatically reduces bacterial leaf spot risk.
Soil and drainage: Add 20–25% perlite to standard potting mix. This improves drainage enough to prevent the prolonged saturation that activates Pythium and Phytophthora. Choose a pot with drainage holes; no drainage hole means waterlogging is a matter of when, not if.
Airflow: Leaves that touch each other stay wet longer. In consistently humid rooms, I’ve seen bacterial leaf spot develop within a week of plants being pushed together on a windowsill.
