Here is the biological sequence. When anthurium roots are submerged in waterlogged, oxygen-depleted soil, aerobic root metabolism fails within hours. The water molds Pythium (specifically Pythium splendens) and Phytophthora (P. nicotianae var. parasitica) — both identified as primary anthurium pathogens by UF/IFAS — are opportunistic organisms that thrive in anaerobic, wet conditions.
