By mid-July, the spring’s new growth has started to firm up. The base of this year’s shoots has become woody and stiff while the tips remain green and pliable. This in-between stage — semi-ripe, sometimes called semi-hardwood — is the propagation window for woody shrubs, Mediterranean herbs, and broad-leaved evergreens.
Semi-ripe cuttings are less prone to wilting than softwood because the partially firmed tissue retains moisture better. The trade-off: they take longer to root, typically four to eight weeks rather than two to four.
The snap test
Bend the stem back on itself. Semi-ripe wood snaps cleanly at the base but bends without breaking at the tip. If the whole stem bends without snapping anywhere, it’s still softwood.
