Most sugar maple planting advice stops at “don’t plant too deep” and moves on. That’s a shame, because a peer-reviewed depth study on red maple found that trees planted just 6 inches too deep had more than three times the girdling-root damage after three years, and trees buried a full foot developed girdling roots around 71% of their trunk circumference [6]. Depth isn’t a minor detail here — it’s the difference between a tree that thrives for four decades and one that quietly strangles itself before it ever produces real shade, let alone syrup.

Get the Hole and the Depth Right

Before you dig, find it: many nursery trees, whether containerized or balled-and-burlapped, arrive with the flare already buried several inches deep in extra soil or media.
