Spiderwort (Tradescantia): The Tough Native Perennial That Thrives in Sun, Shade, or Poor Soil
Plant spiderwort once and it blooms all spring — even in clay soil or dappled shade where other perennials give up. Here’s how to grow this native perennial right.
Most gardeners discover spiderwort by accident — a violet-blue clump blooming at the edge of a woodland path, or surprising them in a sun-baked border where nothing else has thrived. The three-petaled flowers are striking, but they’re also fleeting: each one opens at dawn, closes before afternoon, and lives for exactly one day. What keeps spiderwort looking lush for weeks is a continuous succession of new buds opening each morning, giving the impression of a plant in constant bloom through May and June.
Spiderwort belongs to Tradescantia, a large genus named for the 17th-century English botanist John Tradescant. For garden use in USDA zones 4–9, two native North American species dominate: Tradescantia virginiana (common spiderwort) and T. ohiensis (Ohio spiderwort). All three share the same core care needs, but they differ in shade tolerance, drought tolerance, and soil pH preference in ways worth knowing before you plant.

Why Spiderwort Belongs in More Gardens
Spiderwort earned its place in American gardens long before native plants became a mainstream trend. Tradescantia ohiensis is among the most ecologically adapted wildflowers in the eastern and central United States, native to prairies, open woodland edges, and roadsides from the Atlantic coast to Kansas. Unlike most ornamental perennials, it has co-evolved with local pollinators over thousands of years.

Bumblebees are spiderwort’s primary pollinator. The flowers produce pollen but no nectar, which means the insects that visit are specialist pollen-foragers — the same guild that also pollinates tomatoes, blueberries, and peppers through buzz pollination. Halictine bees (sweat bees) are secondary visitors, and spiderwort serves as a larval host plant for several specialist insects, making it a useful addition to any wildlife-supporting border.
On the practical side, spiderwort asks very little. Both main species resist most pests and diseases. Penn State Extension classifies spiderwort as deer-resistant — deer will occasionally browse the foliage, but they don’t target it the way they do hostas or tulips. Light Requirements: Sun, Shade, or Something in Between
Spiderwort’s light tolerance depends on which species you’re growing — and the two main species differ more than most care guides acknowledge.
Tradescantia virginiana is exceptional in this regard. NC State Extension lists its range from full sun (six or more hours of direct light daily) all the way to deep shade with fewer than two hours. Few flowering perennials bloom reliably at the deep-shade extreme, which gives T. virginiana a rare role in gardens where other options fail. Missouri Botanical Garden recommends part shade to full shade as the practical sweet spot for this species, particularly in zones 7 and above where afternoon heat scorches foliage.
Tradescantia ohiensis is less shade-tolerant. It blooms most profusely with at least four to six hours of direct light and becomes taller and laxer in shadier conditions, with noticeably reduced flower production. In very deep shade, it persists but won’t perform at its best.
Andersoniana hybrids like ‘Sweet Kate’ and ‘Charlotte’s Web’ were selected partly for sun tolerance and compact habit, making them the better choice for hot, exposed borders in zones 5 through 8. In the hottest part of the range — zones 8 and 9 — afternoon shade benefits all spiderwort types, reducing foliage scorch and helping the flowers stay open a little longer before the heat triggers them to close.

Soil, Planting, and Spacing
Soil adaptability is spiderwort’s most underrated quality. Tradescantia ohiensis grows in clay, loam, gravel, sand, and shallow rocky soil — the difficult spots where most ornamentals fail to establish. T. virginiana is similarly tolerant, thriving in clay and high-organic-matter soils without special preparation.
Soil pH matters differently for each species. T. virginiana accepts a broad range of 6.0–8.0, making it adaptable to most garden soils without amendment. T. ohiensis prefers more acidic conditions (below pH 6.0), so in soils above pH 6.5, T. virginiana will generally outperform it without any adjustment.
Plant spiderwort 12–18 inches apart. Clumps spread gradually via underground offshoots and self-seeding, so allow room for a 1.5–2.5 foot spread at maturity. Watering and Feeding
Water needs vary by species, and matching the right species to your site makes a real difference in long-term performance.
Tradescantia ohiensis is notably drought-tolerant once established. Missouri Botanical Garden describes its moisture requirements as dry to medium, and it handles summer dry spells without supplemental irrigation after the first season. In consistently dry sites, sandy soils, or areas without summer rainfall, T. ohiensis is the more reliable choice.
Tradescantia virginiana prefers consistent moisture. It performs best in moist to wet, fertile conditions and benefits from supplemental watering during extended dry spells. This makes it a natural fit for rain gardens, low spots, or the moist edge of a woodland planting. Siting T. virginiana in bone-dry soil is asking it to underperform.
Neither species needs fertilizer under normal garden conditions. Nitrogen-rich soil or fertilizer tends to produce heavy, floppy foliage that sprawls more severely after the first bloom flush. If growth seems poor after several seasons, a light application of balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring is more than enough.
The Mid-Season Cut-Back: How to Get Two Bloom Periods
By early July, spiderwort enters its awkward phase. The flowers are spent, the foliage turns yellow-green and begins to splay outward, and the plant loses the elegance it had in full bloom. This is predictable and normal — but it’s also the cue to take action.

What matters is removing spent stems and foliage cleanly, giving the root crown a fresh start without leaving stub growth that won’t resprout from the cut point.
New growth emerges from the crown within two to three weeks. In most years, this second flush of vegetative growth produces flowers again by September — lighter than the spring flush, but a genuine rebloom that extends spiderwort’s garden value well into autumn. Even in years when the second bloom is sparse, the cut-back solves the mid-summer flop problem and leaves a cleaner plant through late summer.
Timing is the key variable. Cut back in late June or early July, not later. Waiting until August leaves too short a growing window for the new growth to build enough mass to flower before temperatures cool. The late-June to early-July window consistently produces better fall rebloom than cutting back after midsummer.

Spiderwort Varieties Worth Growing
The two native species form the foundation of any serious spiderwort planting. Andersoniana hybrids, originally developed in Europe from crosses of North American species, offer more compact habits and a wider flower-color palette for garden borders.

A note on ‘Purple Heart’ (Tradescantia pallida): though often listed alongside garden spiderwort, it’s a distinct tropical species from Mexico, cold-hardy only to zone 7. It’s a fine container plant in colder climates but behaves as an annual north of zone 7 — a different plant from the hardy perennials above.
Propagation
Division is the simplest and most reliable method for propagating garden spiderwort. In spring as new growth emerges, or in fall after the foliage dies back, dig the clump and split it into sections with a spade or sharp knife. Each section needs at least one visible crown bud and a set of attached roots. Replant at the same depth, water in, and divisions establish within a few weeks.
Spiderwort also self-seeds freely. Seedlings appear around the parent plant each spring and transplant easily while still small. For deliberate seed sowing, collect ripe capsules in late summer and sow outdoors in fall for natural cold stratification and spring germination. Alternatively, refrigerate seeds for 60 days and sow indoors in late winter.
Stem cuttings work for those who want to multiply plants quickly in spring. Take 4-inch tip cuttings, remove the lower leaves, and root in moist perlite. Most cuttings root within four to six weeks.

Pests, Problems, and Pet Safety
Spiderwort has few significant pest problems. Slugs can damage young shoots in early spring when the foliage is tender — hand-pick after dusk or apply iron phosphate-based pellets, which are safe around pets and wildlife. The leaf beetle Lema collaris occasionally feeds on the foliage of T. ohiensis, leaving characteristic holes, but rarely causes enough damage to warrant treatment.
The mid-summer foliage flop is the most common complaint, and the July cut-back described above is the direct solution. On pet safety, the picture is nuanced. Tradescantia ohiensis is non-toxic to cats and dogs according to NC State Extension — deer, rabbits, and box turtles all browse its foliage without harm. Tradescantia virginiana carries a mild toxicity: ingestion can cause mouth and stomach irritation, and sap contact may irritate sensitive skin.
