Botrytis, Powdery Mildew, or Leaf Blotch? The 3-Symptom Check That Saves Your Peonies
Gray mold in spring, white powder in late summer, purple blotches all season — which peony disease do you actually have? ID it in 30 seconds and treat the right one.
The trouble with peony diseases is that three different fungi cause trouble at three different times of year — and they all look vaguely similar to a gardener who hasn’t encountered them before. Gray mold collapsing spring shoots looks nothing like the white powder coating leaves in August, which looks nothing like dark purple blotches spreading through midsummer. Misidentifying the disease means applying the wrong control, or treating something that needs no treatment at all.
Three fungal diseases account for the vast majority of peony problems in home gardens: Botrytis blight (Botrytis paeoniae), powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni), and peony leaf blotch (Graphiopsis chlorocephala). Each arrives in its own season, attacks different plant parts, and responds to different management. This guide covers all three — including the one you may be better off leaving entirely alone.
How to Tell the Three Diseases Apart
Check three things before doing anything else: when the symptoms appeared, where on the plant you see them, and what the affected tissue actually looks and feels like.

The clearest dividing line is timing. Botrytis strikes in cool, wet spring weather and kills soft new tissue. Powdery mildew arrives in late summer in shaded, crowded planting spots. Leaf blotch starts as small red dots in early summer and expands to dark glossy patches — but unlike the other two, it rarely causes any real harm to the plant beneath those alarming-looking blotches.

Botrytis Blight — The Disease That Strikes Without Warning
Botrytis paeoniae is a peony specialist. Unlike the generalist Botrytis cinerea that attacks hundreds of plant species, this pathogen evolved specifically to infect Paeonia species. You won’t carry it in on your boots from the vegetable garden, but a single infected peony can release airborne spores that reach every plant in the bed within hours.
The disease cycle explains why autumn cleanup is so effective. Black resting structures called sclerotia form inside dying stem tissue in late summer, then drop to the soil with autumn debris. They lie dormant through winter. When spring arrives and conditions turn cool and wet, the sclerotia germinate and release airborne spores that land on emerging shoots. By the time you notice a shoot collapsing, the infection has been building for days — visible only as a slight discoloration at the base before the tissue suddenly gives way.
Ohio State University Extension identifies three phases of Botrytis infection in peonies:
- Shoot blight: Young stems at 5 to 8 inches tall suddenly collapse. A water-soaked, brown-to-black rot runs from the soil line upward, often with a soft gray or brownish mold coating in damp weather.
- Bud blast: Small flower buds turn black and fall off without opening.
- Flower blight: Larger buds that managed to open develop brown patches and collapse, with gray spore masses visible on the affected tissue.
All three phases can appear in the same wet spring — and in cool, rainy seasons, the damage can be severe enough that plants produce no viable flowers at all.
Treating Botrytis Blight
Cultural controls carry more weight here than fungicides. Refer to the complete peony care guide for the full seasonal routine, but for disease management specifically:
- Remove all stems and foliage to ground level in autumn and destroy the debris — do not compost it. This breaks the sclerotia cycle: no debris means far fewer overwintering spores germinating the following spring.
- Space plants at least 3 feet apart and place in full sun. Airflow dries tissue after rain and prevents the sustained leaf wetness that spores need to germinate.
- Water only at the base, never from above. Wet crowns in cool weather create ideal infection conditions.
For fungicide protection in seasons where Botrytis has been a recurring problem, apply a preventive spray when shoots first emerge, repeating every 14 days through mid-June. Effective active ingredients include copper-based sprays, captan, chlorothalonil, mancozeb, and thiophanate-methyl. The RHS notes that in the UK, no fungicides are currently registered for use against this disease on garden peonies — cultural management is the only available route for UK gardeners.
When not to treat: Botrytis appearing in July or later on flowers already past their peak doesn’t justify spraying. Deadhead the affected blooms promptly, remove the tissue from the garden, and invest the effort in a thorough autumn cleanup instead.
Powdery Mildew — Late Summer’s White Coating
Erysiphe polygoni produces the white powdery coating that appears on peony leaves from midsummer through autumn. It looks alarming but behaves differently from Botrytis in one critical way: it does not need wet leaf surfaces to spread. The spores germinate on dry leaf surfaces, thriving in conditions of warm days, cool nights, and high ambient humidity — exactly the microclimate inside a crowded, shaded peony bed. Overhead watering, which washes spores off leaves, actually reduces powdery mildew pressure, the opposite of most fungal diseases.
According to Iowa State University Extension, powdery mildew develops most aggressively when peonies receive too much shade and have insufficient air circulation around the foliage. The white coating rubs off easily with a finger, distinguishing it from physical residue such as dust. In severe cases, leaves yellow and drop early, but powdery mildew rarely kills peony plants outright.
Treating Powdery Mildew
Prevention outperforms cure. Plant peonies in full sun with at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides. Once powdery mildew is established on a leaf, fungicide slows further spread but doesn’t reverse the existing infection.
For active protection, effective active ingredients include myclobutanil, propiconazole, and tebuconazole — all available in homeowner formulations. Potassium bicarbonate (OMRI-listed organic option) works well in early or mild infections without synthetic fungicides. In autumn, remove and destroy affected foliage rather than composting it.
Peony Leaf Blotch — The One You Might Not Need to Treat

What most gardeners call leaf blotch or peony measles is caused by Graphiopsis chlorocephala — the updated name for what was long listed as Cladosporium paeoniae, a label still appearing in many older references. The disease is straightforward to identify: small circular red or purplish spots appear on the upper leaf surface in early summer. Through midsummer they expand and merge into large, glossy, dark purple blotches. Flip the leaf over and you’ll see matching tan-brown to chestnut-brown patches on the underside. Stems develop purple-red streaks with diffuse edges.
Here is the fact most descriptions leave out: according to University of Illinois Extension, leaf blotch does not significantly affect plant vitality. Plants with heavy infections still flower normally, still build energy reserves in their roots through summer, and still return at full strength the following year. The problem is cosmetic — and that matters for your treatment decision.

If your peonies flowered normally this year, symptoms appeared after blooming, and this is a small or informal planting, autumn sanitation alone is your best response. Cut all stems to ground level and destroy the debris. The fungus overwinters in dead plant material, so removing it dramatically reduces next year’s infection pressure without any chemical input.
When fungicides are worth applying
If you grow peonies for cut flowers, exhibit at shows, or noticed heavy spotting arriving before flowers opened this year, preventive fungicides make sense. Apply tebuconazole, boscalid + pyraclostrobin, or chlorothalonil when new growth reaches 2 to 4 inches in spring, continuing until buds show color. Timing is critical — applying after blotches have fully formed changes nothing for the current season.

Prevention: The Year-Round Routine That Covers All Three
A single seasonal routine reduces pressure from all three diseases substantially. The underlying logic: all three fungi overwinter primarily in old plant debris, and all three are aided by wet foliage and poor airflow. Remove the debris, improve the conditions, and infection pressure drops year over year.
Autumn (after first frost): Cut all stems to ground level and destroy them. Do not compost. This removes Botrytis sclerotia, leaf blotch overwintering spores, and powdery mildew mycelium in a single action. Clear away old mulch and fallen leaves. Apply a fresh 2 to 3 inch layer of clean mulch over the crowns to suppress the small number of sclerotia remaining in the soil surface.
Spring (when shoots emerge): If Botrytis was a recurring problem last year, begin preventive fungicide spray when shoots reach 2 to 4 inches. Reapply every 14 days through the end of bud development. Growing season: Remove spent flowers promptly. Open blossoms left on the plant are the primary entry point for Botrytis flower blight. Water only at the base, in the morning, so tissue dries before evening temperatures drop and humidity rises. Deadhead regularly and remove any visibly infected tissue as you spot it. Avoid overhead irrigation if Botrytis or leaf blotch have been recurring problems in previous seasons.
For most home gardens, thorough autumn cleanup alone shifts the following year from a disease-heavy season to one with barely noticeable symptoms. The fungi need last year’s debris to build the inoculum that infects this year’s growth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compost diseased peony foliage?
No. Home compost piles rarely reach temperatures high enough to kill Botrytis sclerotia or destroy leaf blotch spores. Bag the material and send it to green waste disposal, landfill, or burn it where permitted. The risk of reinfecting your garden from the compost pile is real.
Will dividing peonies spread the disease?
Botrytis and leaf blotch both live in aerial debris, not in healthy root tissue. Dividing healthy-rooted plants in late summer does not spread either disease, provided you use clean, dry tools and avoid dividing plants with active foliar symptoms.
My peony gets leaf blotch every single year. Is there anything that actually works?
The most durable fix is combining thorough autumn cleanup with a preventive spring spray starting at 2 to 4 inches of new growth. If the planting has been in place for many years with debris accumulating, one aggressive cleanup season — removing all old mulch and debris down to bare soil, then replacing with fresh mulch — can break a persistent infection cycle. No variety is immune, but growing in full sun with adequate spacing prevents the humid canopy conditions that blotch thrives in.
