Can I use running bamboo instead of Fargesia rufa?
No. Running bamboos — most Phyllostachys and Pleioblastus species — spread via rhizomes that can push through drainage holes and into surrounding soil within a single growing season, even from a container. Fargesia rufa is one of the few genuinely clumping species cold-hardy below zone 7. If you live in zones 8–11 where summer heat stresses Fargesia, substitute Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonso Karr’ — a tropical clumping bamboo that stays containerized reliably and reaches 8–10 feet in a 30-gallon pot.
My patio only gets 3–4 hours of sun. Can this plan still work?
The bamboo and Hakonechloa will do well — both handle partial shade without compromise. The water lily is the problem: most dwarf varieties need 6 hours of sun to bloom. In a shaded water container, substitute water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), which flowers in part shade, floats without a soil basket, and produces the same meditative water-surface effect.
