Those swept-back red-and-yellow petals look exactly like a Turk’s-cap lily, and the name on every plant tag says “flame lily” or “glory lily.” It isn’t a lily. Gloriosa superba is a tuberous climber that hauls itself up a trellis using tendrils grown straight off the tips of its own leaves, and every part of it — flower, leaf, tendril, tuber — carries a compound potent enough that hospitals still see poisoning cases from it. Wait, Is a “Flame Lily” Actually a Lily?

No. True lilies belong to the family Liliaceae.
