What “Fruitless” Actually Means (It’s a Flower Problem, Not a Marketing Term)
The silvery look that makes olive trees so recognizable comes from a dense layer of scale-like hairs (peltate trichomes) on the underside of each leaf. That layer isn’t decorative — it hides the leaf’s pores from direct sun and increases how efficiently the plant uses the little water it has, letting olive trees hold up in the same hot, dry conditions that would scorch most other silvery-leaved trees[1]. ‘Little Ollie’ is the one most homeowners actually mean when they say “fruitless olive bush.” Monrovia introduced it in 1987 as a compact, densely branched selection that naturally matures to about 6 feet tall and wide[4] — the cover photo above shows one kept to well under that as a clipped low hedge, which is standard practice for this cultivar; left alone, it will fill out to its full 6-foot size rather than stopping at 4 feet on its own. ‘Swan Hill’ has the best-documented backstory of any fruitless cultivar. In 1961, UC Davis pomology professor Dr. Hudson T. Hartmann was on sabbatical near the town of Swan Hill in Victoria, Australia, when he came across an olive tree that was already at least 30 years old and had flowered every year without ever setting fruit. The spray products it’s describing — based on naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) or ethephon — are real, and University of California Cooperative Extension recommends them, but for a different problem: homeowners who already have a standard, fruit-bearing olive tree and want to stop that specific tree from fruiting this year. The chemical has to be applied while the tree is actively blooming, typically at mid-bloom and again at full bloom, and it works by causing the flowers themselves to abort[9].
