That bump on your tree isn’t a tumor — it’s a $10,000 secret. Here’s the injury mechanism that creates a burl, and how to spot the real thing.

There’s a lump on your tree that wasn’t there five years ago — smooth, rounded, covered in the same bark as everything around it, but clearly not supposed to be there. Your first instinct is probably “is my tree sick?” Your second, once you’ve searched a photo of it online, might be “wait, is this worth something?”

Both questions have real answers, and they’re connected. That lump is called a burl, and it forms through a specific, documented process: an old injury or infection disrupts the tree’s normal growth control at one exact spot, and instead of healing flat, the tree reactivates dozens of dormant buds that were never supposed to sprout at all. They cluster instead of spreading out, and the wood grows around them in a dense, swirling tangle instead of straight rings.

That tangle is cosmetically strange and structurally harmless to the tree — and it’s also, for the right species and size, exactly what turns a $50 slab into a five-figure one. What Exactly Is a Burl?

A burl is a solid, woody lump that grows out of a tree’s trunk, branch, or — less often — its roots, and it’s always covered in the tree’s own normal bark. Run your hand over one and you’ll feel a dense, rounded mass, sometimes smooth like a dome, sometimes knuckled like a fist. Inside, it’s a different story: cut one open and you’ll find a chaotic tangle of tiny knots and swirling grain instead of the straight, parallel fibers that make up the rest of the trunk.

That tangle is the tell. According to University of Connecticut Extension, a genuine burl has a smooth, rounded, bark-covered surface with a solid wood interior — what separates it from a gall, a much rougher, tumor-like growth that’s often soft or discolored inside. Texas A&M Forest Service adds a second identifying detail: the wavy, curly, “bird’s-eye” figure inside a burl comes specifically from an aborted adventitious bud — a branch that started to grow, got redirected, and never made it out through the bark. Oaks are frequent burl hosts, too — one more entry on the list of unusual bark and growth traits some oak species are known for, including the chinquapin oak.

I’ve had readers send me photos of a burl asking, half-panicked, if their oak has a tumor. It doesn’t — not in the way you’re picturing. But the honest answer is more interesting than “no.”

The Injury-and-Infection Mechanism: How a Wound Becomes a Burl

Every documented burl traces back to the same starting point: an injury or infection at a specific spot on the tree — a broken branch, a frost crack, an insect bite, a fungal or bacterial infection — that sends the wrong instructions to the cells nearby. Instead of healing over in a flat scar the way a clean pruning cut does, the tree’s growth machinery misfires at that exact site, and cell production runs away from itself.

Under the bark, a thin layer of cells called the vascular cambium is responsible for all new wood growth — it’s the layer that adds a ring every year. At the site of a burl, that cambium goes into hyperplasia: an abnormal overproduction of xylem, or wood, cells, packed in far tighter and in far more directions than normal, according to UNH Extension. At the same time, the injury reactivates dozens of dormant buds — tiny embryonic shoots the tree keeps in reserve under the bark on almost every trunk, waiting for a signal like storm damage or a lost crown to sprout a new branch. Instead of growing outward into branches, these buds cluster and grow sideways, each one leaving a tiny knot wrapped in its own swirl of fiber. Multiply that by a few hundred buds packed into one wound site, and you get the dense, chaotic figure inside a burl.

In some documented cases, researchers can trace the trigger with real precision. The soil bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens — a well-studied plant pathogen — infects through exactly this kind of wound. It carries a plasmid, a small ring of extra DNA, with a segment called T-DNA that it inserts directly into the plant cell’s own genome. That T-DNA carries genes for auxin and cytokinin, the two hormones that tell plant cells when and how fast to divide. Once those genes are running inside the plant’s own cells, the cells become “hormone-autonomous” — they no longer need a signal from the rest of the tree to keep dividing, so they don’t stop, according to a 2014 review in Frontiers in Microbiology. That’s the crown gall mechanism, and it’s one of several documented pathways — alongside viral and fungal infection — that researchers list as burl triggers.

Not every burl gets this level of forensic explanation. Most extension sources are honest that the exact trigger for any specific burl “cannot be explained” after the fact — by the time you’re looking at a fist-sized lump on a 40-year-old oak, whatever insect, fungus, or frost event started it is long gone. What is consistent, biologically, is the pattern: injury or infection, then localized loss of normal growth control, then dormant buds reactivating in place instead of growing out, then wood laid down around hundreds of tiny knot centers instead of in straight rings.

Is a Burl a Tumor? Should You Worry About Your Tree?

Technically, yes — a burl is a benign tumor, in the strict biological sense of a mass of cells growing outside normal control. But before that word triggers alarm, here’s the mechanistic reason it isn’t dangerous the way a tumor in an animal is dangerous.

Utah State University Extension’s forestry program makes the comparison directly, in a fact sheet literally titled “Can Trees Get Cancer?”: the cell death or mutation that starts a burl causes the remaining live cells to develop abnormally, but — unlike animal cancer — that abnormal growth cannot easily spread to other parts of the plant or to other plants. A tree has no circulatory or lymphatic system to carry rogue cells to distant organs. Whatever triggered the burl stays contained to that one site, walled off by the same compartmentalization process the tree uses against rot and decay.

Multiple state extension services confirm the practical version of that finding: burls generally do not harm healthy, normally growing trees, and typically require no treatment at all beyond, occasionally, pruning off small sprouts growing from the burl’s surface.

Not every lump on a trunk is a burl, and the difference matters. One is essentially decorative, one is usually harmless but worth watching, and one can mean the tree is actively losing a fight with a pathogen.

If what you’re looking at doesn’t have full bark coverage, or if it’s oozing, cracking, or clearly killing the branch above it, that’s a canker, not a burl — and it’s worth a call to a certified arborist. A true burl, by contrast, is one of the few tree oddities you can safely ignore indefinitely.

Why the Same Injury That Deforms the Wood Is What Makes It Valuable

This is the connection most articles about burls skip entirely: the exact biological process that makes a burl look chaotic on the outside is the same process that makes it valuable on the inside.

Ordinary trunk wood is straight and predictable because the vascular cambium lays down fibers in parallel, running roughly vertically, ring after ring. That predictability is why straight-grained lumber is cheap and easy to work — and also why it’s visually plain. A burl breaks that pattern at the cellular level: because hundreds of dormant buds reactivated in a tight cluster instead of growing out into branches, the wood fibers had to wrap around each one individually. Cut a cross-section through that cluster and you’re not looking at rings — you’re looking at hundreds of tiny knot centers, each surrounded by its own swirl of grain, all interlocking with its neighbors.

Historically, that same interlocked, shatter-resistant structure made burl wood useful for a completely different reason. For centuries, before it had any decorative value, burl wood was carved into mallets, mauls, and the wooden “beetles” or “beadles” used to drive chisels and wedges — tool heads that needed to survive repeated hammer blows without splitting. The market has changed; the mechanical property that made it valuable hasn’t.

Oak and maple are both common burl-producing hardwoods — sugar maple in particular is already famous for figured grain (the bird’s-eye pattern from the table above is a related but distinct effect), and a true sugar maple burl commands some of the strongest prices in the maple category. Size and species set the ceiling; the figure — how tightly and symmetrically the grain swirls once you cut into it — decides where a specific slab actually lands inside that range.

Redwood is the outlier. Coast redwood grows the largest burls of any species — some large enough to encircle an entire trunk — and a single raw, unfinished slab cut from one of those giants can run from a few hundred dollars for a small piece up to roughly $5,000–$6,000 for the largest single slabs currently on the market. Finished, bookmatched, or auction-grade pieces — cut and polished from an exceptional redwood or walnut burl and sold as one dramatic slab rather than raw lumber — are widely reported by dealers to push well past $10,000. It’s the combination of rare species, large size, and a spectacular figure revealed only after cutting that gets a burl slab into five-figure territory, not the burl itself sitting on the tree.

Should You Ever Cut a Burl Off Your Tree?

If it’s on a living tree you want to keep healthy, no — not without professional help, and often not even then. Removing a burl leaves a wound far larger and less clean than a proper branch-pruning cut, and larger wounds are harder for a tree to seal.

Trees don’t heal wounds the way animals do; they wall them off, a process pathologist Alex Shigo named CODIT — Compartmentalization of Decay in Trees. The tree builds four internal barriers around damaged tissue, and the weakest of the four, according to Penn State Extension, is Wall 1: the barrier that plugs the vertical water-conducting channels — exactly the channels a large burl-removal wound cuts straight through. A flush cut or a wound that doesn’t close cleanly gives decay fungi a long-term foothold, which is exactly why University of Maryland Extension’s guidance is blunt: removing a burl “may damage the tree and is not recommended.”

If a burl is on a tree that’s already dead, already down, or scheduled for removal anyway, that’s a different situation — plenty of woodturners harvest fallen or storm-damaged burls legitimately. What you shouldn’t do is cut a burl off a healthy, standing tree you don’t own, or off protected land; large redwood burls in particular have been targeted by poachers who gouge chainsaw cuts into living, centuries-old trees and leave them exposed to exactly the kind of infection this whole process started with.
