Keep Your Garden Shears Sharp for 10+ Years With These 4 Maintenance Steps

Dull shears crush stems and spread disease with every snip. Follow these 4 steps to keep garden shears sharp, clean, and rust-free for 10+ years.

Dull shears don’t cut — they crush. A bruised stem is an open invitation for fungal disease, and a blade left with plant sap carries pathogens from one plant to the next with every snip. I keep a pair of bypass pruners that are over a decade old and still pass a clean paper-cut test. The reason is four consistent habits, none of which takes more than a few minutes. Here’s the full routine.

Step 1: Wipe Down After Every Use

Plant sap is the main enemy of shear longevity. It builds up on blades, stiffens the pivot joint, and gives soil particles something to bond to — which accelerates blade wear far faster than cutting alone.

After each pruning session, wipe both blades with a cloth lightly dampened in 3-IN-ONE or mineral oil, then wipe dry. For dried-on sap, a nylon pan scourer soaked in WD-40 breaks it loose quickly without scratching the blade surface. Avoid washing metal parts in standing soapy water — soap strips the protective oil film and standing moisture is the fastest route to rust.

If your shears have wooden handles, check them while you’re cleaning. Wood that feels dry or shows hairline cracks benefits from a light rub of boiled linseed oil, which prevents splintering and keeps the grain tight. Safety note: linseed-oil-soaked rags can self-ignite through oxidation — spread them flat to dry outdoors rather than bunching them, and dispose of them properly.

Step 2: Disinfect to Stop Disease Spread

Wiping and oiling removes sap. Disinfecting removes pathogens — and those are two separate problems.

Botrytis spores, fire blight bacteria, and mosaic virus are invisible on blade surfaces and transfer directly from cut plant tissue into the next plant’s open wound. This is why disinfection matters every time you move between plants — especially any showing signs of disease.

The fastest, least corrosive method is 70% isopropyl alcohol, used undiluted. Wipe or briefly dip the blades; no prolonged soak is needed. Iowa State University Extension recommends this for routine between-plant disinfection, and it works against most common garden pathogens.

For heavily contaminated tools or known disease outbreaks, a 10% bleach solution provides stronger disinfection. Mix 1 part bleach into 9 parts water — always add bleach to water to avoid splashing — and soak blades for 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Critical follow-up: bleach accelerates metal corrosion. Always dry and re-oil blades immediately after rinsing.

One important limitation: 70% isopropyl alcohol is not reliably effective against fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) on apple and pear trees. If pruning fire blight-infected wood, use the bleach protocol and disinfect between every single cut.

Step 3: Sharpen Once or Twice a Year

Most garden shears need sharpening annually — twice if you use them heavily through the growing season. The method depends on which type you own, and getting this wrong is the most common sharpening mistake.

Bypass shears have two blades that slide past each other like scissors. Only the single beveled cutting blade gets sharpened — on its angled face only. The flat back side must never be sharpened. Start with the coarser face of a diamond file, then finish with the fine face, pushing along the blade in one consistent direction at the factory bevel angle (typically 15–25 degrees) — never back-and-forth. After sharpening, flip the blade and make two or three very light passes on the flat back to remove the wire burr the sharpening creates, without actually sharpening that side.

Anvil shears have a single pointed blade that closes against a flat metal bar. Sharpen the cutting blade’s beveled face only, using the same diamond file technique. The flat bar itself shouldn’t be sharpened, but small nicks in it can be smoothed with a fine tapered file to restore consistent blade contact across its full width.

Test sharpness with a sheet of printer paper: hold it by one edge and slice with the blade tip. A sharp blade cuts cleanly with no tearing; a dull blade crumples or drags. Step 4: Oil the Pivot and Store Correctly

Before storing shears — and after every sharpening session — apply a single drop of 3-IN-ONE, mineral oil, or WD-40 directly to the pivot bolt. Open and close the shears several times to work the oil into the joint and across the blade surfaces. This one step prevents most of the mechanical wear that causes blades to misalign or stiffen over time.

Storage matters more than most gardeners expect. Rust undoes a sharpening faster than a full season of cutting does — and the cause is almost always trapped moisture. Store shears in a dry location: a closed toolbox, a hanging rack in a covered shed, or wrapped in a lightly oiled cloth. Some gardeners store pruners blade-down in a bucket of dry sand; the sand wicks moisture and keeps blades from contacting damp surfaces.

Never store shears in a closed bag or container while still damp — that’s the fastest route from a freshly sharpened blade to visible surface rust.
