Feed a bougainvillea like a hungry tomato plant and you’ll get a wall of green leaves and almost no color. The plant’s bracts — the papery, colorful part everyone actually wants — form in response to restraint, not abundance. Get the nitrogen level wrong and you can water perfectly, give it full sun, and still end up with a leafy vine that never blooms. Skip the High-Phosphorus “Bloom Booster” — Here’s Why

A lot of bougainvillea advice, including plenty of retail fertilizer labels, tells you to reach for a high-phosphorus “bloom booster” — something like a 10-52-10 formula — the moment you want more flowers. Skip it. NDSU Extension horticulturist Esther McGinnis reviewed the research behind that advice and found it doesn’t hold up: “Studies show that high phosphorus rates do not increase the number of flowers.”[5] More tellingly, she notes that commercial greenhouse growers — the people whose paycheck depends on getting flowering right — actually use fertilizers with low phosphorus relative to nitrogen, in 3-to-1 or 5-to-1 nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratios, the opposite of what bloom-booster marketing implies.[5]

Phosphorus isn’t irrelevant to bougainvillea — it’s just not the lever most gardeners think it is. Once new growth is underway around mid-spring, feed weekly with a high-nitrogen liquid feed to build the vegetative framework fast — a container plant on a compressed season needs that early push. The underlying logic is the same in both cases — nitrogen builds growth, potassium supports bloom quality — the schedules just differ because a landscape bougainvillea is already carrying the framework it needs, while a container plant has to build fresh growth before it can flower on it.
