Removing Azaleas from Your Yard

Established azaleas are easier to remove than most gardeners expect. Their root systems are shallow and fibrous rather than deep and anchored. Cut the shrub back to a manageable stub with loppers, dig a trench 12–18 inches out from the base to sever the main roots, and the root ball will lever out without machinery for most plants under 8 feet.
