Some annuals are perennials in disguise. Here’s the biology behind why plants die after one season — or don’t — and how to tell which is which.

You plant petunias in a hanging basket in May. By October, frost turns them to mush and they’re gone for good. Three feet away, a peony you put in the same spring barely bloomed its first year — and this summer, its fifth in the ground, it threw two dozen flowers. Same garden, same weather, completely different endings. The difference isn’t luck. It’s a fundamental split in how these two plants are built to live and die.
