Is a Coconut a Nut or a Fruit? Neither — Even the FDA Changed Its Mind

Split a coconut in your own kitchen and the layers are obvious once you know to look for them: strip away the fibrous husk and what’s left looks, structurally, like an oversized peach pit. You just never see that step at the grocery store, because the husk is almost always removed before export.

That fibrous mesocarp isn’t a random design choice — it’s a flotation device. Peer-reviewed research on coconut fruit biology describes the husk and the air pocket beneath it as what gives the fruit “the necessary buoyancy for dispersal by floating,” letting an ocean current carry a viable seed for months before it washes up and germinates on a distant beach [5]. Is a Coconut Also a Seed?

Yes — and this is where “fruit, nut, or seed” stops being a trick question. The coconut fruit (the whole drupe) contains exactly one seed, and that seed is the part you actually eat.

The biggest surprise in that table is the “Common Food Examples” column for drupes: almond sits there, not in the nut row, because a store-bought almond is the seed scooped out of a peach-like drupe — the exact same relationship a coconut has to the fibrous drupe it comes from.

The FDA Used to Call Coconut a “Tree Nut.” Not Anymore.

As of January 6, 2025, the FDA no longer classifies coconut as a tree nut for food allergen labeling purposes — a change that lines up U.S. food law with what botany already knew [2][3].

Before that date, U.S. allergen labeling law grouped coconut with tree nuts alongside almonds, walnuts, and pecans, meaning a product containing coconut could carry a “Contains: tree nuts (coconut)” warning even though coconut isn’t a botanical tree nut. In its Edition 5 food allergen guidance, the FDA cut its regulated tree-nut list from 23 named nuts down to 12, dropping coconut and cola/kola nut specifically because the agency found no “robust body of evidence” to support treating either as a major food allergen [2]. The 12 tree nuts still on the list are almond, black walnut, Brazil nut, California walnut, cashew, filbert/hazelnut, heartnut, macadamia nut, pecan, pine nut, pistachio, and English/Persian walnut [2] — a list the FDA’s own current guidance still uses almonds, pecans, and walnuts to illustrate [3].

This is a labeling and regulatory decision, not individualized medical advice. Coconut allergy is real but uncommon, and it doesn’t reliably track with tree nut allergy in most people — though documented cases of genuine allergic cross-reaction exist, which is part of why this is described as a labeling change rather than a blanket safety guarantee. Anyone with a diagnosed tree nut allergy should confirm with an allergist before treating the new label as permission to eat coconut.

Coconut Isn’t Even a Special Case

Coconut isn’t uniquely mislabeled — the almond and pecan sitting in the same pantry are, structurally, closer relatives to coconut than an actual nut is.

Almonds are drupes too: what’s sold as an “almond” is the seed pulled out of a peach-like fruit, with the fleshy exterior discarded rather than eaten [4]. Grow an almond tree yourself and the relationship is obvious in a way a shelled almond in a bag never shows — the same early bloom and fuzzy hull-splitting behavior as any other stone fruit, right down to a leathery green hull that splits away from the pit instead of ripening into something you’d want to eat.
