Begonia rex arrived in England in 1856 as a stowaway in a shipment of orchids from Assam in northeastern India. Belgian botanist Jules Putzeys formally described it the following year. The wild species is native to the East Himalayas — from southern Bhutan to northern Myanmar — where it grows on shaded forest floors with seasonal temperature swings and periodic dry spells.

Those conditions matter. Rex’s preference for cool nights and its tendency to go dormant in winter both trace back to the Himalayan climate it evolved in. What you buy today as a rex begonia is almost never the straight species. It belongs to the Rex Cultorum group — more than 500 hybrids all tracing their ancestry to that single Assam plant. Decades of crosses with Asian relatives including B. annulata, B. diadema, and B. grandis produced the range of painted cultivars available now.

Begonia maculata has a different story. Italian botanist Giuseppe Raddi named it in 1820 from a specimen he collected on Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro, gathered during his seven-month expedition to Brazil in 1817. It’s native to the Atlantic rainforest understory in southeastern Brazil — in Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro states — where the climate is warm and humid year-round with no cold or dry season.

That stable warmth explains why maculata never goes dormant. It didn’t evolve the need for that survival strategy.

What Makes Each Leaf Look the Way It Does

This is the question no comparison guide answers — and it’s worth understanding because it explains nearly every practical care difference between these plants.

Rex begonia’s metallic shimmer is structural, not chemical. The silver, pewter, and metallic markings on rex leaves don’t come from pigment. They’re produced by peltate trichomes — microscopic hair-like structures on the leaf surface — with circular caps whose radially arranged cells create optical interference. When light hits these structures at different angles it scatters differently, which is why metallic markings shift in appearance depending on the light source. Some cultivars also contain iridoplasts, a modified chloroplast found in shade-adapted begonias, whose tightly stacked thylakoid membranes function as a photonic structure that reflects specific wavelengths. It’s the same mechanism that makes butterfly wings iridescent — physics, not dye.

The practical consequence: direct sunlight damages these structures permanently. UV burns the trichomes and the metallic pattern fades. It doesn’t recover.

Maculata’s polka dots are pockets of air in the leaf. The silver spots are produced by blister variegation — air becomes trapped between the outer epidermis and the photosynthetic tissue beneath. These air pockets act as tiny mirrors: light enters, bounces off the tissue interface, and exits as silver. The dots are structurally hollow, not pigmented.

There are two competing evolutionary theories for why the plant developed them. One proposes the spots mimic butterfly eggs, making the plant look already occupied and deterring females from laying. The other suggests the spots resemble leaf miner damage, discouraging herbivores. Butterfly egg mimicry has been experimentally confirmed in other plant species — it’s plausible for maculata but not yet proven directly.

The practical consequence: direct light bleaches the surrounding leaf tissue rather than the spots themselves, reducing the contrast that frames them. Spots become harder to see, but the tissue isn’t permanently damaged the way it is with rex.

Growing Begonia Rex

Light. Bright, filtered indirect light is the target — near a north or east-facing window works well. Rex adapts to lower light but loses color intensity. Watering. Allow the soil surface to become nearly dry before watering. Rex’s creeping rhizome stores moisture, making it more drought-tolerant than most tropical houseplants. The common error is watering on a schedule rather than checking the soil first. Overwatering causes root rot quickly.

Humidity. This is the main challenge. Rex needs a minimum of 50% relative humidity, and many cultivars want 60–80% for full leaf development. Brown, crispy leaf margins are the first sign of low humidity. Never mist — water sitting on the leaves invites botrytis and bacterial leaf spot. Use a pebble tray (pot sitting above the waterline, not in it) or place a humidifier nearby. Temperature. Daytime 65–75°F, nights above 60°F. Below 55°F slows growth markedly; frost kills the plant.

Dormancy. Rex begonias go dormant in winter, and this surprises most new owners. As days shorten in autumn, many cultivars drop some or all of their leaves. This is normal dormancy lasting 2–3 months — not death. Reduce watering to barely moist; just enough to prevent the rhizome from desiccating. Stop fertilizing until new growth appears in late winter. Not every cultivar goes fully dormant; some simply slow down. If leaves fall and you respond by watering more, the rhizome will rot.

Pot and soil. A shallow, wide container suits rex better than a deep one. The rhizome grows horizontally — a standard pot wastes depth it doesn’t use and holds excess moisture around the crown. Keep the rhizome on top of the soil, not buried; covering it causes rot. An airy mix of coco coir, coarse orchid bark, and perlite drains fast enough to prevent sitting moisture.

Growing Begonia Maculata

Light. Bright indirect light, but maculata tolerates slightly more direct sun than rex. A couple of hours of gentle morning light from an east-facing window won’t burn it. Afternoon direct sun will. The spotted leaves look most vivid with good light — too little and the green darkens, the spots lose contrast.

Watering. Water when the top inch of soil dries out — more frequent than rex, but less per session. A little-and-often approach works well. Filtered water or rainwater is preferable; maculata is mildly sensitive to chlorine and fluoride over time, which causes brown leaf tips.

Humidity. Needs 50%+ but is more forgiving than rex in typical home conditions. The same advice applies — pebble tray rather than misting. Wetting the spotted leaves promotes powdery mildew, the plant’s most common problem.

Pruning and height. Maculata is a cane begonia that reaches 2–4 feet tall and becomes leggy without intervention. Pinch out growing tips in spring and early summer to encourage side branching. Without pinching, you get a tall bare stem with leaves clustered at the top. A leggy maculata isn’t unhealthy — it just looks sparse and benefits from a tall pot or support stake.

No dormancy. Maculata doesn’t go dormant. It slows in winter and appreciates reduced watering and no fertilizer during that period, but it stays active and should be treated as a live plant throughout the year.

Flowering. Maculata produces clusters of white or pale pink flowers with yellow centers on arching stems, typically in spring and summer. Rex begonias rarely flower meaningfully indoors. If flowers matter alongside foliage, maculata is the clear winner.
