Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) produces separate male and female flowers on the same plant, and pollination only works one way: pollen from a male flower must reach the stigma of a female flower within a narrow window of the same morning. A bee does the carrying.
The catch is timing. Male flowers open first — sometimes five to ten days before any female flowers appear — and once both sexes are present, the ratio skews heavily toward male (roughly three males per one female under average garden conditions). Female flowers close by midday. If bee activity is low during that window, fruits abort before they reach an inch long. Male vs Female Flowers: How to Tell Them Apart
Male flowers sit on a thin straight stem. Female flowers have a tiny immature fruit — a miniature zucchini — at the base of the petals. If that miniature fruit shrivels and drops, pollination failed. If it swells and lengthens over 24–48 hours, the visit was successful.

The goal is to increase bee presence during the morning window when zucchini flowers are open. The most effective approach is to choose plants that bloom continuously rather than in a single flush, so there is always something drawing pollinators into that garden zone.
Borage (Borago officinalis)
Borage is the single highest-value pollinator companion for cucurbits. Its star-shaped blue flowers produce nectar continuously across the season and attract bumblebees in particular — bumblebees being two to three times more efficient at cucurbit pollination than honeybees because of their vibration technique (buzz pollination). Plant borage at the south or southwest end of the zucchini row so it does not shade the main crop. One or two plants are sufficient for a three-metre bed. Sweet Alyssum (Lobularia maritima)
Sweet alyssum blooms from June through October in most US climates and draws hoverflies and small native bees into low plantings that work well as a border along zucchini beds. Hoverflies are not pollinators in the same sense as bees — they do not carry pollen intentionally — but their presence signals a healthy pollinator ecosystem and they visit flowers regularly. Alyssum also smells of honey, which brings foragers into the immediate area before they move to larger flowers. Sow seed directly after last frost or set out transplants; it fills gaps between zucchini plants without competing for water.
Phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia)
Less commonly grown but highly effective, phacelia is sometimes called the best bee plant in the Northern Hemisphere by agricultural researchers at Rothamsted Research. Its curved flower spikes rank among the highest in nectar quantity per flower per day in trials measuring bee foraging time. Sow it in early May in full sun adjacent to your zucchini bed. A study from Iowa State University Extension found that nepetalactone repels certain soft-bodied insects at concentrations found in crushed leaves. In practice, plant catnip near the base of zucchini stems where squash bugs typically aggregate. Brush or lightly crush a few leaves when you pass to release the volatile oils. Catnip spreads aggressively if allowed to set seed; cut it back after flowering to keep it contained.
Radishes (Raphanus sativus): Rapid-Cycle Companions
Radishes grown to flowering (rather than harvested young) release glucosinolates into the soil and emit sulphur compounds from their leaves that appear to reduce cucurbit pest pressure. They also attract ground beetles, which are predators of squash bug eggs and nymphs in the soil layer. Sow radishes thickly between zucchini transplants; allow some to bolt and flower rather than pulling them all at harvest size. Marigolds (Tagetes patula) attract pollinators through continuous bloom colour while also emitting a scent that discourages squash bugs. French marigolds in particular have evidence for root exudate effects on soil nematodes, but their primary value near zucchini is above-ground: they bring bees into the bed and mask cucurbit volatiles. Place them at the north edge of the bed so they do not shade plants. Deadhead regularly to extend bloom from June to first frost.
Dill (Anethum graveolens) in flower draws parasitic wasps that target squash bug eggs while also attracting syrphid flies and bees for pollination duty. Dill bolts quickly in heat, which actually works in your favour: by mid-July when squash bug pressure peaks, dill that went to flower in June is in full umbrella bloom and humming with predatory wasps. Do not plant dill directly next to zucchini at transplant time, as young dill produces compounds mildly inhibitory to cucurbit germination; instead, transplant dill once zucchini plants are established and at least thirty centimetres tall.

What to Keep Away From Zucchini
Fennel suppresses cucurbit growth through root allelopathy and should be kept at least a metre away from zucchini beds. Other cucurbits — cucumbers, pumpkins, winter squash — compete for the same pollinators and the same pest pressure; growing them in tight proximity intensifies squash bug populations rather than distributing them. Potatoes and zucchini share Phytophthora blight susceptibility; interplanting them creates conditions for rapid disease spread if the season turns wet.

Do nasturtiums really help with squash bugs?
