The species you’re most likely to encounter is Aphis helianthi, and it tends to cluster on the undersides of leaves and at shoot tips [6]. Sunflower Moth Larvae
If you’re finding webbing stretched across your sunflower heads, that’s the calling card of Homoeosoma electellum, the sunflower moth [6][7]. Sunflower Seed Weevils

At the seedling stage, cutworms — the stout, soil-dwelling caterpillars of various moth species — can sever a sunflower seedling clean at or just below soil level overnight [8]. Downy Mildew
Downy mildew is caused by Plasmopara halstedii, a soilborne pathogen that persists in the soil for up to 10 years [3]. The most diagnostic sign is a white, felt-like fuzz on the undersides of leaves — quite different from powdery mildew, which coats the upper surface. Infected plants are often conspicuously stunted with chlorotic (pale yellow) patches running along the main leaf veins.

Sclerotinia is conspicuous once you know what to look for: a white, fluffy mycelium forming on stems, heads, or at the soil line, alongside hard, black seed-like structures (sclerotia) roughly 0.5–1 cm long [3]. The sclerotia are the pathogen’s survival mechanism — they persist in soil for years and germinate to release airborne spores when conditions allow.
On sunflowers, the RHS identifies three expressions of the disease: head rot (soft brown area on the back of the head), mid-stem rot (large tan lesions causing lodging), and basal stalk rot (whole-plant wilting from the soil line) [1]. Nitrogen Deficiency
