The east side of a building, a spot under the high canopy of deciduous trees, or the north-facing side of a fence all work well. White-flowered varieties (including white mopheads and all panicle, smooth, and oakleaf hydrangeas) are not affected by pH in terms of colour — only bigleaf types with the anthocyanin pigment respond to soil aluminium.
6. Over-Fertilizing — Especially With High Nitrogen
More is not better with hydrangea fertiliser. Over-feeding — particularly with high-nitrogen lawn fertiliser or frequent applications of a balanced feed — is a fast route to a plant that looks spectacular and never flowers.
Why it matters: Nitrogen drives vegetative growth: stems, leaves, and canopy size. When nitrogen is abundant, the plant has no hormonal incentive to shift resources toward reproduction (flowering). Bigleaf and oakleaf hydrangeas form their flower buds in late summer and autumn, and those buds survive on the plant all winter. 8. Planting the Wrong Species for Your Climate
Bigleaf hydrangeas are the bestselling hydrangea in the US by a wide margin, which means millions of gardeners in Zone 5 and colder are trying to grow a shrub that is only reliably winter-hardy in Zones 5–9 — and even within that range, a cold winter in Zone 5 regularly kills the above-ground stems. This is not a care failure; it is a species mismatch that cannot be fixed with better technique.

Why it matters: A bare soil surface around hydrangeas loses moisture through evaporation at a rate up to five times higher than mulched soil.
