Which Prayer Plant Is That, Really? The 60-Second Leaf Underside Test for Calathea, Maranta, Stromanthe & Ctenanthe

You pick up a plant at a garden center and the label says Prayer Plant. Helpful — except that label gets stuck on four different genera that look superficially similar but have different leaf architecture, different care needs, and sometimes dramatically different underside color. Nurseries use the common name interchangeably for Calathea (now largely Goeppertia), Maranta, Stromanthe, and Ctenanthe, which means you could be taking home any of them.

The good news: you can narrow it down in about 60 seconds with two observations — the color of the leaf underside and the plant’s overall growth habit. One Family, Four Genera — and a Name Change That Fuels the Confusion

All four genera belong to Marantaceae, the arrowroot family. They share a native habitat on the floor of tropical American rainforests, which is why they all want similar conditions: shade, warmth, and humidity. Beyond that, they diverge considerably.

Part of the label confusion traces to a 2012 DNA study. Botanist Finn Borchsenius and colleagues published molecular phylogenetic analysis in Systematic Botany showing that the old genus Calathea was polyphyletic — meaning different species within it were more closely related to plants outside the group than to each other. Their conclusion: roughly 246 species needed to move into a resurrected genus called Goeppertia, leaving only about 37 species in a narrowly defined Calathea. So the beloved Calathea ornata is now correctly Goeppertia ornata, the peacock plant is Goeppertia makoyana, and the zebra plant your local nursery has labeled Calathea zebrina is botanically Goeppertia zebrina.

In everyday use, you’ll still see everything called Calathea, and that’s fine for conversation. But when you’re searching for care advice, knowing you have a Goeppertia versus a true Calathea versus a Stromanthe matters — they aren’t all equally demanding. Throughout this article we’ll use Goeppertia when referring to the reclassified species and note Calathea in parentheses for those still using the older name.

The two most commonly confused pairs are Stromanthe and Ctenanthe (both tall, both have patterned leaves) and Goeppertia and Ctenanthe (both have purple undersides). Here’s how to split each pair: Stromanthe’s underside is distinctly pink-magenta — it glows when backlit. Ctenanthe’s underside is more maroon-red without the pink tint. And Ctenanthe leaves typically have a more uniform oblong shape with a blunt, almost squared-off tip, while Goeppertia leaf tips taper more smoothly to a point.

Maranta — The True Prayer Plant

Of the four genera, Maranta is the one botanists historically called the prayer plant, and its movement is the most dramatic demonstration of why the name stuck. Maranta leuconeura, native to the tropical forests of Brazil, spreads along the ground and roots into the substrate at each leaf node, forming low carpets rather than upright clumps. The Missouri Botanical Garden describes the var. erythroneura as having “a herringbone design consisting of a showy red midrib with parallel red veins which arch from the midrib to the leaf margins” — if you see that pattern, you have a Maranta. Look also for the dark oval spots arranged like rabbit tracks on each side of the midrib, a feature consistently noted in NC State Extension’s plant profile; no other genus has these.

Underside color in Maranta is the most variable of the four genera, ranging from light gray-green in M. leuconeura var. kerchoveana to reddish-purple in var. erythroneura. This is the one genus where the underside test can be ambiguous — but the herringbone vein pattern and low spreading habit narrow it down immediately.

One practical distinction: Maranta is the only genus in this group you can propagate from a stem cutting. The stems root readily at the nodes, which is why you occasionally see them in hanging baskets. All three other genera require rhizome division — a useful ID confirmation if you’ve tried cuttings and failed.

Goeppertia (Calathea) — The Pattern Artist

Goeppertia is the genus most people are actually growing when they think they have a Calathea. With roughly 246 species after the 2012 reclassification, it covers everything from G. orbifolia‘s large round silver-striped leaves to the rattlesnake markings of G. lancifolia to the peacock-eye design of G. makoyana. The defining visual characteristic across all of them is what NC State Extension describes as complex patterned surfaces — the markings look painted on, almost too symmetrical to be natural. That effect is the result of specialized cells called idioblasts beneath the surface layer that contain crystalline inclusions, creating the high-contrast two-toned look.

The underside is reliably deep purple to aubergine — darker and more blue-purple than Ctenanthe’s redder tones. According to the Missouri Botanical Garden’s plant profile, G. zebrina displays this reddish-purple underside even on a cultivar with yellow-green stripes above, making the underside a stable diagnostic feature even when the top varies widely by cultivar.

Goeppertia includes the largest-leaved members of the group. Species like G. orbifolia can produce leaves exceeding 12 inches across. Leaf shapes vary dramatically by species — from the narrow lance of G. lancifolia to the broad round of G. orbifolia — which is why shape alone is a poor Goeppertia identifier; the deep purple underside is more reliable.

Stromanthe — The Tall Colorful One

Stromanthe is easy to overlook in identification guides, but it’s the genus most likely to be on your shelf if you have something labeled “Calathea Triostar.” No such plant exists — that name is actually Stromanthe thalia ‘Triostar’ (also sold as ‘Tricolor’). UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions names it as a Florida Plant of the Year and notes the brilliant reddish-pink underside as its most dramatic feature, and that’s exactly what separates it from Goeppertia.

Stromanthe grows significantly taller than the other three genera under good conditions — NC State Extension records heights of 3–5 feet with a 2–3 foot spread, with leaves measuring 6–20 inches long. The Wisconsin Horticulture Extension notes that leaves are “thick, glossy, oblong with entire margins” and that petioles are pink to burgundy in color. Those pink petioles are a useful secondary ID feature: if the leaf stem itself has pink or burgundy coloring before you even flip the leaf, you’re almost certainly looking at Stromanthe.

Stromanthe also has a unique movement behavior among the four genera. Wisconsin Horticulture Extension describes it: leaves fold at night like the others, but during the day they actually track the sun — facing east at dawn to capture low morning light, then rotating upright by midday to reduce sun exposure. Maranta, Goeppertia, and Ctenanthe don’t do this solar tracking.

Ctenanthe — The Toughest of the Four

Ctenanthe is the genus most often confused with Goeppertia because both have upright growth and purple-toned undersides. The differences are in the details. NC State Extension’s profile of Ctenanthe amabilis describes leaves that are oblong with a “truncate apex” — the tip is noticeably blunt or squared off rather than tapering. The surface pattern is fine alternating bands (dark green on grayish-green), which horticulturalists describe as feathered or pinstripe in appearance, contrasting with Goeppertia’s more complex painted-look markings.

Ctenanthe is also the most forgiving of the four genera in terms of care. Its leaves have a thicker cutin layer than Goeppertia, giving them more protection against dry air. It tolerates brief dry spells that would cause tip browning in Goeppertia or Stromanthe. Why Do They “Pray”? The Pulvinus Mechanism

All four genera move their leaves in a pattern called nyctinasty — a circadian-clock-driven response to light cycles. Understanding the mechanism helps you recognize it when you see it and understand why movement varies between genera.

The movement engine is the pulvinus: a swollen, joint-like node at the junction of the petiole (leaf stalk) and the leaf base. Research published in PMC by Morita and colleagues found that prayer plant movement works through hydraulic pressure — the pulvinus cells expand and contract by changing their water content through osmotic shifts. As light levels drop in the evening, ion pumps in the pulvinus change the electrochemical gradient, water follows osmotically, and the cells on one side of the joint swell while the opposite side contracts. The result is a leaf that folds upward, displaying that colorful underside.

The timing is circadian — driven by an internal clock rather than responding directly to light. Maranta shows the most complete fold — the Missouri Botanical Garden notes that leaves move from flat (horizontal) to perpendicular (vertical) nightly, a near-90° rotation. Goeppertia folds moderately. Ctenanthe folds less dramatically. Stromanthe folds but also adds the daytime sun-tracking described above. Knowing your genus changes your care strategy. Here’s how they rank, from most demanding to most forgiving:

Goeppertia (most demanding): These are the plants that earned prayer plants their difficult reputation. UF/IFAS recommends consistent humidity, distilled or rainwater (tap water fluoride causes tip burn), temperatures consistently above 65°F, and indirect light. The Missouri Botanical Garden notes that low humidity causes leaf rolling and browning. If your plant has crisping brown edges despite regular watering, it’s almost certainly a Goeppertia — and the solution is humidity, not more water.

Stromanthe (demanding but resilient): UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions notes Stromanthe thrives in high humidity but tolerates slightly more variation than Goeppertia. The thick, glossy leaves are less prone to edge browning in dry air. The main requirement is consistent moisture and no direct sun, which scorches the variegation.

Maranta (moderate): The Missouri Botanical Garden notes Maranta is more tolerant of lower temperatures than Goeppertia — it prefers above 60°F but doesn’t collapse at 58°F the way some Goeppertia species do. It also handles lower humidity better. The NC State profile confirms it does well in standard indoor conditions, making it a good starter prayer plant for those who don’t have a humidifier.

Ctenanthe (easiest): The extra cutin protection noted by The Planty Blog translates directly to forgiveness in practice. Brief dry spells between waterings, lower humidity, and slightly inconsistent care all cause less damage than they would in the other three genera. If you want the prayer plant aesthetic without intensive maintenance, Ctenanthe is your genus.

One useful rule of thumb: the more vivid the leaf underside color, the more the plant is investing in its foliage biochemically — and generally, the more specific its care requirements. Frequently Asked Questions

My plant is labeled “Calathea” — does that mean it’s in the Calathea genus?

Not necessarily. Most plants sold as Calathea are now correctly classified as Goeppertia following the 2012 reclassification by Borchsenius et al. In horticulture, the old name persists everywhere, so a plant labeled Calathea ornata is almost always Goeppertia ornata. For everyday care this distinction rarely matters — the care requirements haven’t changed — but knowing the scientific name helps you find accurate botanical information and understand why some older care guides seem slightly off.

Can I propagate a prayer plant from a stem cutting?

Only if it’s a Maranta. Maranta leuconeura roots readily from stem cuttings because its stems naturally root into the substrate at each leaf node. Goeppertia, Stromanthe, and Ctenanthe must be propagated by rhizome division — separate the root clump during repotting, ensuring each section has at least one leaf and a healthy rhizome section. My “prayer plant” doesn’t seem to fold its leaves at night. What’s wrong?

Several factors suppress the movement. Low light levels throughout the day reduce the day/night contrast the circadian system uses to calibrate timing. Temperatures below 60°F slow the osmotic processes in the pulvinus. And plants under significant stress — overwatering, root bound conditions, pests — often show reduced movement as the plant allocates energy elsewhere. A healthy plant in bright indirect light with appropriate humidity will move reliably every night.

Is “Calathea Triostar” a real plant?

No — the name doesn’t correspond to any Calathea or Goeppertia species. “Triostar” (also sold as “Tricolor”) is a cultivar of Stromanthe thalia. The label confusion is extremely common; nurseries apply the Calathea name loosely. Flip the leaf — if the underside is brilliant hot pink or magenta, you have a Stromanthe, not a Goeppertia.

Which prayer plant genus is best for beginners?

Ctenanthe, followed by Maranta. Ctenanthe’s thicker leaves tolerate lower humidity and occasional missed waterings without browning. Maranta is forgiving of temperature fluctuations and does well in standard household humidity. Save Goeppertia for when you have a humidifier, filtered water, and a stable warm spot — those conditions aren’t hard to create, but they do need to be intentional.
