Flooded Citrus Trees: How to Save Satsumas, Lemons and Limes After 6-16 Inches of Rain
Southeast Texas took up to 16 inches of rain. Here’s how to save a flooded satsuma, lemon, or lime tree from Phytophthora root rot in the first 72 hours.
Citrus feeder roots start dying after roughly two to three days sitting in saturated, oxygen-free soil, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and University of Florida IFAS Extension. Southeast Texas took six to sixteen inches of rain across Jefferson County and the Beaumont area when the remnants of Tropical Storm Edouard stalled over the region in early September — just north, Hardin and Tyler counties saw more than 20 inches, triggering a flash flood emergency — and the Neches River and Pine Island Bayou have stayed at or above flood stage since, with the National Weather Service still keeping flood warnings active on both waterways this week. If your satsuma, Meyer lemon or key lime has been standing in water since the storm, the job right now is simple: get air back into the root zone. Pull mulch back from the trunk, open a channel so standing water can drain away from the tree, and hold off on watering. Do not fertilize. Do not prune the wilted growth. Then watch the tree for two to four weeks, because that’s when the real damage — Phytophthora root and foot rot — tends to show up.
Why Standing Water Kills Roots So Fast
Roots don’t drown the way people imagine — they suffocate. Flooded soil quickly turns anaerobic — oxygen-free — because standing water fills every air pocket a root normally pulls oxygen from. A peer-reviewed study on citrus rootstocks found that citrus has none of the adaptations — like the spongy internal air channels called aerenchyma — that some flood-tolerant plants use to survive underwater [3]. Without oxygen, root cells can’t run normal respiration, so they lose the energy they need to pull in water and nutrients. That’s the mechanism behind the classic post-flood look: leaves that wilt and yellow even though the ground is soaking wet, because the roots physically can’t move water up the trunk anymore.
UF/IFAS Extension’s citrus flood guidance puts a number on it: soil saturated for more than three days, especially in warm weather above 86°F, is enough to injure the root system outright [2]. That’s the clock the 72-hour window is describing — not a hard deadline where the tree dies on hour 73, but the point where oxygen-starved roots stop functioning and stay stressed long enough for the next problem to move in.
The Three Moves That Actually Help Right Now
None of these fix flood damage that’s already happened. They stop it from getting worse.

- Pull mulch back at least a foot from the trunk. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension specifically warns that citrus is prone to foot rot where the trunk sits against wet organic material [1] — and a rain-soaked mulch collar pressed against the bud union is exactly that setup. Pulling it back lets the trunk base dry out faster.
- Open a drainage path away from the tree. A shallow channel or trench toward the lowest point of the yard — even a spade-dug furrow — gets standing water moving instead of sitting over the root zone. - Hold off on watering, even if leaves are wilting. Wilted leaves on a flooded tree usually mean the roots can’t move the water that’s already there, not that the tree is thirsty. Adding more defeats the point of getting oxygen back into the soil.

What Shows Up Two to Four Weeks From Now
UF/IFAS Extension notes that flood damage in citrus often doesn’t announce itself immediately — symptoms can take days to weeks to appear as the soil dries and the tree’s stress response catches up [2]. The pattern to watch for is Phytophthora root and foot rot, a water mold that thrives in exactly the conditions a flood leaves behind and attacks roots and trunk tissue already weakened by low oxygen.
- Yellowing leaves (chlorosis) that don’t match a simple nutrient-deficiency pattern
- Twig and branch dieback starting at the tips and working inward
- Discolored, sunken, or gummy-looking bark at the trunk base near the soil line
- Roots that look mushy, dark, or slough their outer layer when you check just under the soil surface
One or two yellow leaves right after a flood is normal stress and usually resolves as the soil dries. A tree that’s still declining after several weeks, or showing bark symptoms at the base, is a different situation — that’s when it’s worth digging a small exploratory hole near the trunk to check root color and texture, or calling your county extension office for a look.
