Apple Tree Pollination: Which Varieties Cross-Pollinate and How Far Apart to Plant Them

Your apple tree bloomed beautifully — so why no fruit? Discover exactly which varieties cross-pollinate, which triploids need three trees, and how far apart to plant them.

You planted two apple trees, both leafed out and looking healthy, and in May they were covered in white blossom. Then nothing. No fruit. Not even the small unripe drops you’d expect in July. The trees look perfectly fine — because they are. The problem is almost certainly pollination, and specifically, which varieties you chose to plant together.

Most apple trees are self-incompatible. Their flowers reject pollen from the same tree, or from another tree of the same variety. The blossoms need compatible pollen from a different variety — one that blooms at the same time and carries viable pollen. Get both conditions right and your trees will fruit reliably year after year. Miss either one and they won’t, regardless of how healthy they look. Why Most Apple Trees Won’t Set Fruit Alone

The mechanism behind apple self-incompatibility is called the S-allele system. Every apple variety carries two S-alleles — genetic markers that act as an identification code. When pollen lands on a flower’s style, proteins in the style compare the pollen’s S-alleles against its own. If there’s a match — if the pollen is from the same tree, or from another tree of the same variety — pollen tube growth is blocked before fertilization can occur. No fertilization means no seeds. Without seeds, the developing apple stops growing and drops.

This is why planting two trees of the same variety gives you the same result as planting one. Two Honeycrisps are genetically identical. Their S-alleles match, the incompatibility mechanism fires, and no pollination occurs. The trees bloom every spring and fruit not at all.

Two common US varieties are exceptions: Golden Delicious and Rome. Both are partially self-fruitful, meaning they’ll set some fruit from their own pollen. But even these two produce visibly smaller crops and less regular fruit shape than they would with a compatible partner nearby. Every other standard US apple variety — Fuji, Honeycrisp, Gala, Red Delicious, Braeburn, McIntosh, Cortland, Empire, Jonathan — is fully self-unfruitful and will not produce a usable harvest without a compatible, simultaneously-blooming second variety.

The Bloom Window — Pollination Groups Explained

Cross-pollination requires more than having two compatible varieties nearby. They must also be flowering at the same time. Apple blossoms stay receptive for roughly 9–12 days after opening, and bees must transfer pollen from a compatible variety during that window for fertilization to happen.

Within each flower cluster, the king blossom — the largest flower at the center, the first to open — is the most important. King blossoms set the largest, best-quality fruit. Your pollinizer tree needs to be shedding viable pollen precisely when those king blossoms are open. This is why bloom timing isn’t just a nice-to-have consideration; it’s a hard requirement.

Nurseries and extension services divide apple varieties into three broad bloom-time groups:

  • Early-season bloomers (typically April in most US zones): Yellow Transparent, Lodi, Pristine, Vista Bella
  • Mid-season bloomers (typically May): Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Cortland, Empire, Red Delicious, Jonathan, Liberty, Braeburn
  • Late-season bloomers (May–June, depending on zone): Granny Smith, Winesap, Mutsu, Jonagold, Stayman

Two compatibility rules govern these groups. Trees in the same group have full bloom overlap and cross-pollinate reliably. Trees in adjacent groups (early and mid, or mid and late) often overlap enough to pollinate each other — though a cold spring can separate their windows by a week or two and break that overlap. Trees two groups apart — early and late — rarely overlap and are not a reliable pairing.

Bloom timing shifts earlier in warmer USDA zones. In zones 8–9, mid-season varieties may bloom 3–4 weeks ahead of the same variety in zone 5. Triploids: The Varieties That Need Three Trees, Not Two

Some of the most sought-after apple varieties are triploids — a category that catches many home gardeners off guard. In North America, the most common ones are Jonagold, Gravenstein, Mutsu (also sold as Crispin), Winesap, and Stayman. In the UK, Bramley, Blenheim Orange, and Jupiter are well-known triploids. Understanding what triploid means is the most important thing to check before buying apple trees, because planting a triploid as one half of a standard two-tree setup will give you a half-failed orchard.

A normal apple variety is diploid: its cells carry two complete sets of chromosomes. Triploids carry three sets. The extra set creates an unsolvable problem during pollen formation. Meiosis — the cell division that produces pollen grains — requires chromosomes to pair up in matched sets. With three sets, that pairing fails. The result is pollen that cannot fertilize a flower. A triploid apple tree accepts pollen from other varieties and sets fruit normally. It simply cannot contribute viable pollen to anything else.

The cascade problem: if you plant one triploid (say, Jonagold) next to one diploid (say, Fuji), Fuji’s pollen will successfully fertilize the Jonagold and you’ll get a decent crop from it. But Fuji is itself self-incompatible and needs a compatible diploid partner to get pollinated — a role the Jonagold cannot fill. The result: Jonagold fruits well; Fuji produces little or nothing.

The 3-tree rule: any planting that includes a triploid variety needs at least three trees total — the triploid plus two compatible diploid varieties that can cross-pollinate each other and also pollinate the triploid. Both diploid partners must bloom at the same time as the triploid.

Practical combinations for US gardeners:

  • Jonagold: pair with Fuji + Gala, or Honeycrisp + Empire
  • Gravenstein: pair with Gala + Red Delicious, or Liberty + McIntosh
  • Mutsu / Crispin: pair with Golden Delicious + Jonathan, or Fuji + Honeycrisp
  • Winesap / Stayman: both produce sterile pollen even though they’re not technically triploids; treat them the same way — plant two additional fertile diploids alongside

The payoff is worth the planning. Triploid varieties generally produce larger fruit than their diploid counterparts, and several are regarded as among the finest-flavored apples grown. Jonagold’s sweet-tart balance and Gravenstein’s aromatic complexity consistently outperform simpler diploids in taste evaluations. They’re not beginner trees, but they’re not difficult once the pollination setup is correct.

Crabapples as Universal Pollinators

A crabapple is botanically an apple. The only distinction between the two is fruit size: varieties producing fruit under 2 inches in diameter are crabapples; everything larger is a standard apple. Same species, same S-allele system — which means crabapple pollen is fully compatible with standard apple flowers, exactly as any other apple’s pollen would be.

What makes ornamental crabapples exceptional pollinators is their bloom window. Most apple varieties flower for 9–12 days; ornamental crabapples often flower for two to three weeks. That extended window is wide enough to overlap with early, mid, and even late-season apple varieties in the same area. A single well-chosen crabapple can effectively pollinate several apple varieties across different bloom groups at once.

Washington State University and Missouri University Extension both recommend specific crabapple varieties for apple pollination:

  • Manchurian — blooms early to mid-season; covers early and most mid-season apples; widely available at nurseries
  • Snowdrift — blooms mid to late season; best match for mid and late varieties including Granny Smith
  • Indian Summer — times closely with the king bloom of red-fruited apple varieties
  • Mt. Evereste — early to mid-season bloom; scab-resistant; unusually long-lasting flowers; low maintenance
  • Crimson Gold — mid to late season; combines ornamental red fruit with reliable pollen production

The suburban advantage: if an ornamental crabapple already grows within 50–100 feet of your apple tree — in your yard or a neighbor’s — it may already be doing the pollination work. Note whether the crabapple blooms the same week your apple does. If the windows overlap, you may not need to buy a second tree.

One caveat: some ornamental crabapple cultivars bred purely for flower display produce sterile pollen or very little of it. Varieties like ‘Hopa’ and some purple-leafed cultivars fall into this category. Standard ornamental varieties that produce visible small fruit — the kind that birds eat in autumn — are generally fertile and suitable as pollinators. How Far Apart Should Pollinating Apple Trees Be?

More specifically: semidwarf trees within 50 feet, standard-size trees or crabapples within 100 feet, and dwarf trees on the smallest rootstocks within 20 feet.

These distances reflect how honeybees forage. They concentrate their visits on the nearest flower-rich source before ranging further. Bees carry pollen in specialized structures on their hind legs called corbiculae, and a bee moving between trees at close range transfers pollen far more reliably than one ranging across a large yard scattered with competing flowers.

You don’t need to identify the variety. If you can see it blooming the same week as your own tree, pollination is almost certainly occurring.
