How to Propagate String of Hearts: Tubers, Cuttings and Butterfly Method

Method 1: Tuber Layering — the Plant Does Most of the Work

Run your fingers along a mature string of hearts vine and you will feel small, bumpy growths at many of the nodes — these are the aerial tubers, sometimes called the “beads” of the chain. They range from the size of a pea to about 2 cm across on well-established plants.

The South African National Biodiversity Institute classifies Ceropegia woodii as a tuberous geophyte. In its native habitat on rocky ledges in Zimbabwe and South Africa — where annual rainfall can drop to 600 mm — these tubers are the plant’s primary vegetative dispersal mechanism. They detach, fall onto thin stony soil, and establish independently using their stored starch and moisture reserves. When you press one against damp potting mix, you are replicating what happens naturally on those hillsides.

This is the key biological advantage over stem cuttings: a tuber arrives pre-loaded with energy, so root initiation does not depend on photosynthesis from the new plant. That is why this method consistently gives beginners the best results.

Beyond the aerial tubers, mature plants also develop a woody caudex — an underground storage organ at the base. This structure gives the plant its remarkable drought tolerance and confirms that energy storage is central to its survival strategy. Steps:

  1. Choose a plump, firm tuber at least 1 cm across. Soft or shriveled tubers have depleted reserves and root unreliably; small pale ones are still immature.

Method 2: Stem Cuttings — Fast Roots, Careful Transition

Method 3: The Butterfly Method — Two Vines Per Cutting

The butterfly method takes node propagation to its logical extreme: instead of 4-inch vine sections, you cut each individual node as its own unit. A butterfly cutting measures roughly ½ inch — two heart-shaped leaves flanking a central node, looking faintly like a resting butterfly.

The yield advantage is clear. From a 12-inch vine with 6 nodes, standard cuttings give you 2–3 plants. The butterfly method gives you 6. But the more important advantage is biological.

In a standard vine cutting, the apical meristem at the growing tip exerts apical dominance — hormones from the tip suppress the lateral buds lower on the cutting, so you typically get a single growing shoot. A butterfly cutting has no dominant tip. Both axillary buds flanking the node receive equal hormonal signals, which is why butterfly cuttings consistently produce two growing vines instead of one.
