The problem isn’t shade alone. Hostas, astilbes, and ferns all handle shade just fine. It’s shade combined with drought that wipes out plants under trees, and that combination works through two separate mechanisms.

How to Give New Plants a Fighting Chance

Start with mature plants. Under trees with aggressive root systems, small starter plants get overwhelmed before they can establish. A 2-gallon root ball holds its own; a 4-inch plug rarely can. The larger the root mass at planting, the better the odds [6].
Dig oversized holes. Standard advice is to dig a hole as wide as the root ball. Under trees, go 3–4 times wider. That loosened soil gives new roots somewhere to expand before the tree roots recolonize. You can cut up to one-third of a large tree’s lateral roots during planting without causing significant harm to the tree [6]. Use a sharp spade, not ripping, for clean cuts.
Use newspaper instead of landscape fabric. Landscape fabric blocks organic matter incorporation while tree roots grow straight through it within 18 months anyway. Seven to ten overlapping, wetted sheets of newspaper create a temporary barrier that degrades in 12–18 months [6]. By the time it breaks down, your plants have established their own root networks.
Water consistently the first season.
