What Do Fireflies Eat? The Real Answer — and Why Spraying Your Lawn Kills the Show

A firefly can spend up to two years underground as a predator before it ever flashes a single light. Then, as a flying adult, it often lives only a few weeks — and many species don’t eat anything at all during that time. The honest answer to “what does a firefly eat” isn’t one diet, it’s two completely different ones, and the gap between them explains why fireflies vanish from lawns that get sprayed, why the larvae glow before the adults do, and why a single lightning bug can be dangerous to a pet lizard.
The Short Answer: It Depends Which Stage You’re Looking At
Almost everything interesting about a firefly’s diet happens before it can fly. Firefly larvae — sometimes called glow-worms — are active predators that hunt in soil and leaf litter for one to two years[1][2]. Adults, by contrast, are mostly done eating. Most species survive on fat reserves built up during the larval stage and live only about two months in the wild, just long enough to find a mate[6]. If you’ve ever wondered why a firefly you catch in a jar doesn’t seem interested in any food you offer it, this is why: for most species, the eating phase of life is already over.
What Firefly Larvae Actually Eat (and How They Kill It)
Firefly larvae are far more predatory than most people picture. Their diet is built almost entirely around snails, slugs, earthworms, and cutworms[1][2], and they don’t just nibble — they hunt. A larva uses grooved, pincer-like mandibles to inject prey with a paralyzing compound, then performs what’s called extra-oral digestion: enzymes regurgitated from the midgut liquefy the prey’s tissue from the outside, and the larva sucks up the resulting soup[4]. It’s a slower, quieter version of what a spider does to a fly.
Some species specialize. The genus Photinini targets earthworms almost exclusively, while Photuris larvae are generalists that will eat gastropods, earthworms, termites, and even decaying matter[4]. Several species can track a snail or slug purely by the chemical signature left in its slime trail, and researchers have documented larvae riding on a snail’s shell or lifting it to reach the soft body underneath[4] — hunting behavior you’d expect from something far bigger than an insect the size of a grain of rice.

I’ve knelt in damp mulch with a flashlight looking for glow-worms more than once, and the adult fireflies are never anywhere nearby when you find one. That’s the part people miss: the larval hunting season and the adult light show don’t overlap. Under lab conditions, larvae take anywhere from two to eleven months and four to seven molts (instars) to reach the pupal stage, though field populations often stretch this out to a full one or two years depending on the species and climate[4]. That entire time, they’re doing the pest control most gardeners never see: a bed with a healthy firefly larva population is a bed getting free, silent slug and snail suppression.
That range isn’t just academic trivia — it’s why “how long until I see fireflies again” doesn’t have one universal answer. A larva that hatches in a consistently damp, mild climate can push through its instars closer to the two-month-to-eleven-month end of that window, while one in a drier or colder region may sit at the same instar for the better part of a year, waiting for conditions to improve[4]. The prey itself matters too: a larva specializing in earthworms is tied to whatever depth those worms retreat to in dry weather, while a generalist hunting snails and slugs on the surface responds faster to a wet spell. Neither strategy is “better,” but it does mean two firefly populations a few counties apart can be on completely different feeding schedules in the same summer.

What Adult Fireflies Eat (Spoiler: Often Nothing)
Once a firefly reaches its winged adult stage, its priorities shift entirely to finding a mate before it runs out of stored energy. Adults of most species eat nothing at all, and the ones that do feed typically take only nectar or pollen[6] — a trace amount compared to the volume of prey they consumed as larvae. Reproduction, not feeding, is the entire job description of adulthood.
There’s one striking exception. Female fireflies in the genus Photuris mimic the flash patterns of smaller Photinus males to lure them in, then eat them[6] — a hunting strategy specific enough that entomologists call these females “femme fatales.” It isn’t just a meal. By eating a Photinus male, a Photuris female steals defensive toxins she can’t make herself, since her own genus doesn’t manufacture them[9]. Her adult diet is directly protecting her from being eaten.
Why They Glow — and Why the Glow Comes From What They Eat
Bioluminescence itself has nothing to do with diet directly: it’s a chemical reaction between an enzyme (luciferase) and a substrate (luciferin), powered by ATP, magnesium, and oxygen, that produces light with almost no wasted heat[5][6]. What does connect to diet is the toxin traveling alongside that light.
Firefly larvae glow steadily, not in flashes, and biologists classify this as aposematic signaling — a warning light, not a mating signal. Ants, birds, rodents, and amphibians that try eating a glow-worm learn quickly that it tastes awful, and they avoid the glow afterward[8]. That bitter taste comes from lucibufagins, cardiotoxic steroid compounds most fireflies build themselves from dietary cholesterol, converting it through a series of enzymatic steps into the defensive chemical[9]. In other words: what a larva eats supplies the raw material its body turns into the very toxin that makes its glow a credible threat. The exception is Photuris, which skips the biosynthesis and just eats the toxin pre-made, courtesy of the males it tricks[9].
The Firefly Diet’s Dark Side: Why Vets Warn About Pet Lizards
The same lucibufagins that protect a firefly from a hungry toad can kill a bearded dragon. Lucibufagins are cardiotoxic, and veterinarians at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine report that a single lightning bug can be fatal to a bearded dragon, with the genus Photinus most often implicated in documented cases[7]. Bearded dragons are especially at risk because, unlike native North American predators, they have no evolved instinct to avoid the glow — they’re indiscriminate eaters that will snap up whatever moves.
If you keep a bearded dragon, leopard gecko, or any other insectivorous reptile, don’t let it roam outdoors unsupervised at dusk, and never feed it wild-caught insects from your yard, no matter how safe they look[7]. Farm-raised feeder insects are safe specifically because they’re not exposed to whatever a wild insect might be eating or making.
Building a Garden Fireflies Can Actually Feed In
If you want fireflies back, feed the larvae, not the adults — the adults barely eat, but the larvae need snails, slugs, and moist soil to hunt in for up to two years. Three changes matter more than anything else you’ll read about attracting fireflies:
Mow higher and less often. University of New Hampshire Extension recommends keeping lawns at 3.5 to 4 inches and following the one-third rule — never cutting more than a third of the blade length in a single mow[3]. Stop reaching for the insecticide. Michigan State University Extension is blunt about this: common pesticides “can be lethal to firefly adults and immatures,” and because larvae spend one to two years living in soil, any broadcast lawn treatment reaches them directly[2]. That includes slug and snail baits — you’re not just killing the pest, you’re poisoning the firefly larva that would have eaten it for free. Leave the leaf litter and go easy on the lights. Larvae live in leaf litter and moist soil through their entire hunting stage, so raking a bed completely bare removes both their shelter and their food source[1][3]. Planting a shaded, damp corner with Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica) or Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) gives larvae the ground cover they need without looking messy[3]. Once dusk hits, cut outdoor lighting where you can, or switch to red bulbs and motion sensors — bright white light drowns out the flash patterns adults use to find each other[1]. A consistently damp corner does more for this than any single plant choice, and it’s worth thinking about why: larvae hunt moisture-dependent prey, so a spot that dries out in July stops producing food regardless of how much leaf litter sits on top of it. In practice, that means the shaded edge of a downspout, the low side of a rain garden depression, or the soil under a dense shrub tends to outperform an open, sun-baked bed even if both get the same “leave the leaves” treatment.
