The fast field test: Colocasia leaves point downward or outward, like a heart hanging off the stem; Alocasia leaves point upward, like an arrowhead reaching for the sky [1]. How to Store Colocasia Corms for Winter
Colocasia is the genus that tolerates the classic dig-dry-box routine, and it’s genuinely low-drama if you follow the sequence in order.
1. Dig at the right time. Wait until the first frost blackens the foliage, or dig just ahead of a hard freeze if your first frost tends to be mild [4]. Digging too early, while the plant is still actively growing, interrupts the corm’s own transition into dormancy. Container-grown corms are more exposed to cold than corms growing in the ground, so if yours are in pots, don’t wait as long to dig — a hard freeze reaches potted soil much faster than garden soil [1].
2. Cut back and clean off. Cut the foliage down to a few inches, trim away fine feeder roots, and knock loose soil off by hand [4].

Handling Corms Safely
Both genera carry calcium oxalate crystals throughout their sap, and digging inevitably means cutting into damaged roots and leaf bases where that sap is exposed [8].
