Three weeks ago, my catmint looked like a tangled mat of faded gray-purple. I ran hedge shears through the whole plant — cut the dome down to about four inches — and the neighbors thought I’d killed it. By week three, it was covered in fresh lavender spikes again.
That’s not deadheading. Deadheading is the patient removal of individual spent flowers; it’s valuable, but it works at a different scale. What I did to the catmint is a hard post-bloom shear — a whole-plant cut that removes spent flowering stems in one pass and triggers a mass release of dormant lateral buds. Done at the right time and to the right depth, it’s one of the highest-leverage techniques in the perennial garden.

Why Shearing Triggers a Second Flush
Every growing stem has an apical bud at its tip — the dominant growth point. While active, it produces auxin, a hormone that flows downward through the stem and suppresses the lateral buds sitting at each leaf node below it. Those buds are ready to grow. Auxin keeps them waiting.

When you shear a plant and remove the apical bud, auxin production at that shoot stops. The hormone drains from the stem within hours. Lateral buds sense the drop and activate, producing the branching, leafy regrowth visible a week or two after the cut. Research published in Plant Cell found that IPT3, a gene involved in cytokinin biosynthesis, increased about eight-fold in lateral buds within hours of decapitation — cytokinin acts as a second signal that helps buds overcome residual auxin inhibition. More recent work also implicates sugar redistribution: carbohydrates that were feeding the apical shoot redirect toward the lateral buds once the shoot tip is removed.
The practical implication: shearing a catmint or salvia to the crown isn’t harming the plant. You’re releasing bud sites that have been suppressed throughout the first flush. The more lateral nodes you expose, the more flowering stems emerge — which is why a whole-plant shear outperforms individual deadheading for plants that bloom in a single dense wave.
There’s an honest caveat worth knowing up front: the second flush almost always produces smaller flowers and shorter stems than the first, because lateral buds are secondary growth points. Penn State Extension notes this directly — new growth after shearing “may be shorter than the stems that were cut back, with smaller flowers.” For most gardeners, smaller catmint spikes blooming through September are a worthwhile trade.
Shear, Deadhead, or Chelsea Chop? Three Different Tools
These techniques are often treated as interchangeable. They aren’t.
Deadheading removes individual spent flowers or flower stalks back to the next lateral bud, leaf, or branching point. The goal is to prevent seed set — which signals the plant to stop producing flowers — and redirect energy toward buds still waiting to open. It works best for plants with scattered, sequential bloom times: coreopsis, phlox, penstemon, bee balm. Illinois Extension recommends it for plants that bloom sequentially over three or more weeks, where removing one spent flower encourages the next bud on the same stem to open.
Hard shearing cuts the entire plant back to 2–4 inches above the crown in a single pass, after the main bloom flush has finished. It removes all spent material at once and triggers mass lateral bud activation. This is the technique for catmint, salvia, hardy geranium, and dianthus — plants that bloom in a single concentrated wave rather than a gradual trickle.
The Chelsea Chop is different from both. It cuts actively growing plants by about one-third before they have flowered — typically in late May to mid-June. Longfield Gardens describes it as a timing tool: reducing stems by one-third delays bloom by two to three weeks, which spreads a planting’s flowering period rather than triggering a post-bloom second flush. Applying it in August on a spent plant accomplishes nothing, because there’s no active vegetative growth left to stagger.
The most common mistake is deadheading a catmint one flower at a time when a single pass of hedge shears across the whole dome would produce a full second flush. Match the tool to the plant’s bloom pattern — not to your comfort level with a dramatic cut.
10 Perennials to Shear After Bloom — and How Deep
Not every perennial rebounds after a hard cut. The ones that do share a trait: they bloom in a dense flush, set seed quickly if not cut, and carry robust lateral bud sites below the spent flowering stems.

UNH Extension specifically recommends the basal-foliage shear for dianthus, noting that plants “often send up a flush of new flowers within a few weeks” — one of the few places a Tier 1 extension source uses specific timing language for this technique.
For beginner gardeners: if you’re unsure whether a plant is on this list, look for two traits. First, does it bloom in a concentrated wave (most flowers open within two to three weeks)? Second, does it produce stems from a low crown or mounding base rather than a single woody trunk? Both characteristics together suggest the plant will respond to a hard shear.
After the shear, consistent moisture is the single most important recovery factor. A plant cut during a drought stretch recovers significantly more slowly than one with adequate soil moisture at the time of cutting.
Timing Your Shear: The Zone-by-Zone Window
Most perennials need six to eight weeks of growing time between a hard shear and a meaningful second flush. That window sets a deadline, and working backward from your expected first frost gives you the latest viable cut date.
- Zone 4 (frost around September 15–30): Shear no later than early to mid-July. For catmint and salvia, late June is safer.
- Zone 5 (frost around October 1–15): Shear by early August at the latest; mid-July gives a fuller flush.
- Zone 6–7 (frost around October 15–November 1): Shear anytime through late August with confidence.
- Zone 8+ (frost November or later): Flexible — July through mid-September all work.
The “shear by July 4” rule of thumb holds well for zones 5–7 and gives the most reliable results. In my zone 6 garden, I cut catmint and salvia in the first week of July and reliably get a second flush that runs through September — often producing more total flower-weeks than an unsheared plant would across the whole season.

A catmint sheared two weeks past peak fade responds the same way as one cut at exact peak — as long as the cut exposes live growth points at the crown.
The true deadline is frost itself. Shearing within four weeks of expected first frost leaves barely enough time for new vegetative growth, let alone flowers. In that window, leave the plant alone and do fall cleanup after frost blackens the foliage.
Step-by-Step Shearing Technique
Tools: Sharp bypass pruners for upright plants like salvia, veronica, and delphinium. Hedge shears for mounding plants like catmint and dianthus — they make fast work of the whole dome in one motion. Clean blades between plants to reduce disease transmission.
1. Wait for the right moment. Shear when the majority of flowers are brown and spent — not the first moment the flush starts to fade. Cutting with 30 percent of flowers still open costs you those blooms for no additional rebloom benefit.
2. Water deeply 24 hours before cutting. A well-hydrated plant redirects carbohydrates to lateral buds faster than a drought-stressed one. If you’re in a heat stretch, soak the root zone the evening before.
3. Make the cut. For crown-level shears: cut across the plant at 2–4 inches above the soil, through the zone where short lateral shoots or leaf nodes are visible. For half-cuts on yarrow and veronica: reduce the whole plant by 50 percent, cutting to just above a visible lateral shoot or leaf. The RHS notes that for plants where growth arises higher up the stem rather than from the crown, cut “to just above a healthy leaf, branch, or bud” rather than clearing to soil level.
4. Water again immediately after. The plant has lost most of its leaf area and is temporarily limited in photosynthesis. A post-cut soak maintains root-zone moisture while new growth is initiated.
5. Fertilize three to five days later. A balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10) applied after the first signs of new lateral growth emerge fuels the second flush. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which favor leafy growth over flowers. Don’t fertilize on the day of the cut — wait until regrowth is visible.
6. Leave it alone for three weeks. Every additional cut is a minor stress event. Once the main shear is done, resist the urge to tidy stray stems. Let the lateral buds do their work.
Perennials You Should Not Shear Hard After Bloom
Most reblooming guides stop at the “do cut” list. This section covers the plants where a post-bloom hard shear fails — or sets the plant back.
Asters and chrysanthemums are the most common mistake. By the time these plants have finished blooming in September and October, there’s no growing time left before frost. A hard post-bloom shear simply removes spent flowers before winter dormancy — no second flush follows. The right technique is spring pinching: remove the top third of growth in May and early June to produce a bushier plant with more flower sites. Durham County Master Gardeners specifies that this spring pinching “must be discontinued by early July” or you’ll remove the very buds that will become your fall flowers. Applying the same kind of cut after the plants have already bloomed is the wrong tool at the wrong time.
Rudbeckia (black-eyed Susan) and echinacea (coneflower) are single-flush late-summer bloomers. Deadheading extends their bloom by a week or two by preventing seed set, but a hard post-bloom shear produces sparse regrowth with minimal flowering — and removes the seed heads that goldfinches and chickadees depend on through fall and winter. Illinois Extension recommends deadheading both plants to extend bloom while noting that leaving some spent heads intact provides real wildlife value.
Peonies do not rebloom. They flower once per season and then direct energy into root storage for the following year. Deadheading spent blooms keeps the plant tidy and prevents heavy flower heads from dragging stems to the ground, but it does not trigger a second flush. UNH Extension is explicit: removing spent peony flowers “won’t stimulate new blooms this season.” Leave the foliage completely intact through summer — it’s manufacturing energy for next year’s flowers.
Daylilies operate on a different schedule. Individual flowers last about 24 hours; remove each spent one at its base. Cut the flower scape to the ground once all buds on that stalk are spent. This is not a hard shear and doesn’t produce additional flowers beyond what the plant already has budded. Cutting daylily foliage significantly produces no rebloom benefit.
The pattern across all four: plants that bloom in a dense, mid-season flush on multiple low-crown stems respond to hard shearing. Plants that bloom late in the season, in single spikes, or once per season don’t have the bud architecture for it to work.
After the Second Flush — What Comes Next
Once the second flush finishes — typically by October in zones 5–7 — the plant is moving toward dormancy. Fall cleanup timing is flexible. Cutting to 2–4 inches after the first hard frost blackens the foliage works well, and waiting for that signal confirms the plant has actually gone dormant before you cut.
Leaving stems through winter has ecological value. Catmint and salvia provide overwintering habitat for native bees that shelter in hollow stems. For rudbeckia and echinacea — which aren’t on the hard-shear list — dried seed heads feed birds through January and February before spring cleanup begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the second bloom be as big as the first?
Usually not — expect about 60 to 70 percent of the first flush in flower density and stem height. Penn State Extension notes that new growth after shearing may produce shorter stems and smaller flowers than the original flush. For catmint and salvia, though, the second flush often runs from August into October, meaning total flower-weeks across both flushes typically exceeds what an unsheared plant produces through the season.
My catmint has been cut for three weeks and isn’t growing back. What’s wrong?
The most common cause is drought stress. Catmint in summer heat needs consistent moisture to push new lateral growth; water deeply and give it another two weeks. If there’s still no growth by week six, scratch the crown surface lightly — if green tissue is visible just below the surface, growth is underway and simply slow. Catmint is almost never killed by cutting too hard.
Can I do a hard shear in late August?
In zones 6 and below, a late-August shear leaves most perennials too little time for a full second flush before frost. You’ll get fresh foliage but sparse flowers. In zones 8 and 9, a late-August shear works well for catmint, salvia, and dianthus, which can push a full second flush in four to six weeks.
Do I need to fertilize after shearing?
It helps but isn’t required. A balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) or a bloom-promoting formula applied three to five days after the shear — once new lateral shoots are visible — gives the second flush more energy. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which favor leaf mass over flowers. Don’t fertilize on the day of the cut; wait until regrowth begins.
Pick one plant this weekend — catmint is the easiest to start with — and make the cut. It’ll look alarming for a week. Then watch what the plant does with the freed lateral buds: new growth emerges at nodes you’ve never seen active before, and within three to four weeks, you have a second flush that can run through September. Once you see it work on catmint, the same logic applies to your salvia, geranium, and yarrow. The whole post-bloom shear is really just applied plant biology — you remove one signal and let the plant do the rest.
