Dig the hole in early-to-mid December, before a hard freeze sets in, at the site already picked for the tree’s mature size — a Norway spruce needs room for a 40-foot-plus canopy, not a spot six feet from the house.

Cover the dug hole with mulch, leaves, or straw so the sides don’t refreeze shut[3]. Then solve the other half of the problem: the excavated soil will freeze into an unworkable block if left in a pile outside. Colorado State University Extension’s fix is simple — shovel it into a black plastic bag and store it in a garage or other unheated-but-frost-free space[5]. The dark bag traps enough ambient warmth to keep the soil loose, so planting day means a trowel instead of a mattock and a frozen mound.

Planting Day: What Actually Happens in January

Once the tree has re-acclimated in the garage for several days, planting is fast. Remove every scrap of burlap, twine, and synthetic wrap — synthetic burlap doesn’t decompose and will girdle roots for years if left in the ground[2][9]. Hold it in a cool, bright space — an unheated garage, a three-season porch — until temperatures moderate, then plant once the soil has thawed and dried in spring[1].
